Tetrathiafulvalene-based molecular nanowires.

2008

A new molecular wire suitably functionalized with sulfur atoms at terminal positions and endowed with a central redox active TTF unit has been synthesized and inserted within two atomic-sized Au electrodes; electrical transport measurements have been performed in STM and MCBJ set-ups in a liquid environment and reveal conductance values around 10(-2) G0 for a single molecule.

Steering molecular island morphology on an insulator surface by exploiting sequential deposition

2011

Depending on the deposition order in coadsorption of C(60) and SubPc molecules on CaF(2) (111), distinctly different island morphologies can be obtained. We demonstrate that non-equilibrium processes can play a significant role in molecular structure formation and constitute a new route for complex molecular patterning of an insulating surface.

Chemical modification of porous calcium hydroxyapatite surfaces by grafting phenylphosphonic and phenylphosphite acids

2006

Abstract It is well known that the incorporation of organic molecules can provide an effective route to modify the surface properties of apatite ceramics. The present study shows that phosphonates can react with calcium ions to control the formation of the hydroxyapatite structures. The grafting of C6H5PO(OH)2 (PPOH) and C6H5PO(OH)H (PPH) was used to increase the specific surface area as well as the porosity of hydroxyapatite materials. The higher specific surface area for HAp treated by PPOH is around 267 m2/g compared to the pure HAp (140 m2/g). The phenyl (C6H5) groups are removed by thermal treatment around 500 °C. After treatment at 800 °C, organoapatites (PP-HAp) are converted to stoi…

ChemInform Abstract: Renaissance of Electrosynthetic Methods for the Construction of Complex Molecules

2014

Current affairs: Efficient N,N dimerization by using an electric current is a recent powerful example of preparative electrosynthesis where conventional reagents fail. The general and practical nature of this method as well as other applications will breathe new life into the electroorganic synthesis of complex molecules.

Bioinspired self-assembly of tyrosinase-modified silicatein and fluorescent core-shell silica spheres.

2014

Inspired by the intermolecular cross-linking of mussel foot proteins and their adhesive properties, tyrosinase has been used to modify recombinant silicatein. DOPA/DOPAquinone-mediated cross-linking and interfacial interactions enhanced both self-assembly of silicatein building blocks and templating of core–shell silica spheres, resulting in fluorescent biomimetic silicatein–silica hybrid mesofibers.

Scalable heterogeneous synthesis of metallic nanoparticles and aggregates with polyvinyl alcohol

2009

Here we report on a new route to synthesize colloidal silver and gold nanoparticles, potentially scalable for massive nanoparticle-production. This method is based on the microwave-assisted heterogeneous reduction of the metal salts with polyvinylalcohol. The reaction is carried out in alcohols, which are non-solvents for polyvinylalcohol. Nanoparticles can be very easily separated by filtration. The reaction kinetics are extremely fast. Size-controlled formation of nanoparticle agglomerates is accomplished with a seed-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles upon MW exposure.

Deciphering the Role of Dipolar Interactions in Magnetic Layered Double Hydroxides

2018

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit unparalleled anion exchange properties and the ability to be exfoliated into 2D nanosheets, which can be used as a building block to fabricate a wide variety of hybrid functional nanostructured materials. Still, if one wants to use LDHs as a magnetic building blocks in the design of complex architectures, the role played by the dipolar magnetic interactions in these layered materials needs to be understood. In this work, we synthesized and characterized a five-membered CoAl-LDH series with basal spacing ranging from 7.5 to 34 Å. A detailed experimental characterization allows us to conclude that the main factor governing the dipolar interactions betw…

Design of molecular materials combining magnetic, electrical and optical properties †

2000

The possibilities offered by hybrid functional materials formed by two molecular networks in the context of crystal engineering are illustrated with two different examples: (i) hybrid magnets constructed from combination of an extended ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic inorganic network, with a molecular paramagnetic metal complex acting as template. (ii) Hybrid organic–inorganic compounds combining an organic π-electron donor network that furnishes the pathway for electronic conductivity, with inorganic metal complexes that act as structural and/or magnetic components. These examples illustrate how this hybrid approach allows the design of molecular materials combining non-conventional magnet…
