A hybrid virtual–boundary element formulation for heterogeneous materials

2021

Abstract In this work, a hybrid formulation based on the conjoined use of the recently developed Virtual Element Method (VEM) and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is proposed for the effective computational analysis of multi-region domains, representative of heterogeneous materials. VEM has been recently developed as a generalisation of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and it allows the straightforward employment of elements of general polygonal shape, maintaining a high level of accuracy. For its inherent features, it allows the use of meshes of general topology, including non-convex elements. On the other hand, BEM is an effective technique for the numerical solution of sets of boundary i…

New Anti-Neoplastics Obtained by a Molecular Connectivity Method

2000

Molecular Connectivity is a method, which allows to discriminate different pharmacological activities on the basics of numeric parameters of the molecules in study, related with specific and exclusive indexes. In the present study, we propose two potentially anti-neoplasic compounds: tricromil and zomepirac, by analyzing more than a hundred different chemicals.

Automatic fringe pattern enhancement using truly adaptive period-guided bidimensional empirical mode decomposition.

2020

Fringe patterns encode the information about the result of a measurement performed via widely used optical full-field testing methods, e.g., interferometry, digital holographic microscopy, moiré techniques, structured illumination etc. Affected by the optical setup, changing environment and the sample itself fringe patterns are often corrupted with substantial noise, strong and uneven background illumination and exhibit low contrast. Fringe pattern enhancement, i.e., noise minimization and background term removal, at the pre-processing stage prior to the phase map calculation (for the measurement result decoding) is therefore essential to minimize the jeopardizing effect the mentioned error…

A spatial algorithm to reduce phase wraps from two dimensional signals in fringe projection profilometry

2016

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to reduce the number of phase wraps in two dimensional signals in fringe projection profilometry. The technique operates in the spatial domain, and achieves a significant computational saving with regard to existing methods based on frequency shifting. The method works by estimating the modes of the first differences distribution in each axial direction. These are used to generate a tilted plane, which is subtracted from the entire phase map. Finally, the result is re-wrapped to obtain a phase map with fewer wraps. The method may be able to completely eliminate the phase wraps in many cases, or can achieve…

Recent advancements in structural improvements of lateral flow assays towards point-of-care testing

2019

Abstract Lateral flow assays (LFAs) provide some of the most attractive point-of-care instruments for broad applications with simple, rapid, user-friendly, and cost-effective characteristics. However, these technologies suffer from low sensitivity, the poor limit of detection, and just qualitative or semi-quantitative results that restrict their practical applications. Extensive research has been reported in this area involving sensitivity enhancement, multiplex analysis, the implementation for broad analytes, and development of novel electronic readers for quantitative analysis. This review presents recently reported works for the structural improvements of LFAs considering antibody immobi…

A stacked interleaved DC-DC buck converter for proton exchange membrane electrolyzer applications: Design and experimental validation

2019

Abstract Since the two last decades, hydrogen production has been attracting the attention of the scientific community thanks to its inherent very low pollution when energy coming from renewable energy sources (RESs) are used. However, it implies the use of DC/DC converters to interface source and load. These conversion systems must meet several requirements from current ripple point of view, energy efficiency, and performance to preserve the sustainability of hydrogen production. This article proposes the design and realization of a stacked interleaved buck converter to supply a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. The converter is designed to ensure a low output current ripple and a sui…

Optical system for automatic color monitoring in heterogeneous media during vinification processes

2019

Abstract Wine is one of the most important food products worldwide. However, the application of technologies to the winemaking process can improve. An RGBC optical sensor, used to measure color intensity and shade, was developed and tested in real environments. It is able to measure samples without filtering by offering the color intensity and shade of a filtered sample. Color intensity can be measured within the range of 1.5 and 9.5 color points with an approximate 3% error. The model for shade can be applied to red wines with an approximate 1% error. It can operate directly in cellars under real operating conditions. It avoids collecting samples, and filtering and measuring in a spectroph…

A random-walk benchmark for single-electron circuits

2021

Mesoscopic integrated circuits aim for precise control over elementary quantum systems. However, as fidelities improve, the increasingly rare errors and component crosstalk pose a challenge for validating error models and quantifying accuracy of circuit performance. Here we propose and implement a circuit-level benchmark that models fidelity as a random walk of an error syndrome, detected by an accumulating probe. Additionally, contributions of correlated noise, induced environmentally or by memory, are revealed as limits of achievable fidelity by statistical consistency analysis of the full distribution of error counts. Applying this methodology to a high-fidelity implementation of on-dema…

Multimode entanglement in reconfigurable graph states using optical frequency combs

2017

Multimode entanglement is an essential resource for quantum information processing and quantum metrology. However, multimode entangled states are generally constructed by targeting a specific graph configuration. This yields to a fixed experimental setup that therefore exhibits reduced versatility and scalability. Here we demonstrate an optical on-demand, reconfigurable multimode entangled state, using an intrinsically multimode quantum resource and a homodyne detection apparatus. Without altering either the initial squeezing source or experimental architecture, we realize the construction of thirteen cluster states of various sizes and connectivities as well as the implementation of a secr…
