Metal-polymer nanocomposite resist: a step towards in-situ nanopatterns metallization

2013

In this work we propose an alternative method for the fabrication of metal micro/nanostructures from metal-polymer nanocomposite resists and their subsequent electroless metallization. The process consists of three simple steps: 1. Fabrication of micro or nanopatterns by lithography or any other direct printing technologies (inkjet or microplotter printing...), 2. In-situ synthesis of metal nanoparticle during a post-bake step and 3. Non-electrochemical metallization of nanocomposite patterns. The novelty of our approach is that both Ag and Au nanoparticles are embedded into the polymer pattern and act as seeds for the reduction of Ag(I) when immersed into a solution of the corresponding pr…

Impact of non-functionalized and ionic liquid modified carbon nanotubes on mechanical and thermal properties of ethylene- octene copolymer nanocompos…

2016

In this article the development and characterization of composites made from metallocene based ethylene-octene copolymer (EOC) with 38% octene content, non-modified or modified multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), covalently functionalised with long chain hexadecyl moiety imidazolium ionic liquid (IL-f-MWCNTs), is presented. The procedure of MWCNTs functionalization is discussed. In order to obtain a good dispersion of the filler, composites with MWCNTs and IL-f-MWCNTs in the concentration range of 0.5-12 wt.% were made by ultrasonication / thermoplastic mixing method. The results indicated improvement in mechanical properties with increase of the filler content. The methodology of the d…

Surface charge regulation of functionalized conical nanopore conductance by divalent cations and anions

2019

Abstract The surface charge regulation in nanoscale volumes is a subject of wide interest to biological and chemical soft matter systems. Also, electrolyte mixtures with monovalent and divalent ions are commonplace in practical applications with micro and nanoporous ion-exchange membranes. We have studied experimentally and theoretically the conductance of conical nanopores functionalized with negative and positive surface charges that are bathed by electrolyte mixtures of the monovalent ions K+ and Cl− and the divalent ions Mg2+, Ba2+, Ca2+, and SO42−. Small concentrations of these ions can modulate the nanopore selectivity and conductance because of their interaction with the charged grou…

Fabrication of soft-etched nanoporous polyimide membranes for ionic conduction and discrimination

2021

Abstract Ionic selectivity in nanopores is usually based either on steric or charge exclusion mechanisms. By simultaneously incorporating both mechanisms into a functionalized membrane, an improved control over selectivity can be achieved. We describe the fabrication and experimental characterization of alkali metal cation-selective nanopores in heavy ion-tracked polyimide (PI) membranes using the soft-etching (SE) technique. The latent ion tracks in the PI membrane are selectively dissolved by an organic solvent to form tiny pores without affecting the bulk material. The ionic transport properties of SE-PI membranes are characterized using different electrolyte solutions containing alkali …

Growth kinetics of racemic heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid nanowires on calcite (104).

2016

Molecular self-assembly of racemic heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid on a dielectric substrate at room temperature can be used to generate wire-like organic nanostructures consisting of single and double molecular rows. By means of non-contact atomic force microscopy, we investigate the growth of the wire-like pattern after deposition by experimental and theoretical means. From analyzing the time dependence of the mean row length, two distinct regimes were found. At the early post-deposition stage, the mean length grows in time. Subsequently, a crossover to a second regime is observed, where the mean row length remains nearly constant. We explain these findings by a mean-field rate equation a…

Highly Defined, Colloid‐Like Ionic Clusters in Solution

2012

Many societal challenges at the beginning of the 21st century lead to an apparent and growing need for functional materials and novel ways of materials synthesis and assembly. Rising to the challenge, the utilization of small, self-assembling building blocks for the bottom-up construction of new types of polymers and nanostructures has enjoyed increasing popularity among materials researchers in the recent past. Supramolecular materials like foldamers, surface films, nanoparticles, etc. are created by exploiting noncovalent forces [1] leading to an ordered arrangement of nanoscale building blocks. [2] In the search for new polymers based on noncovalent molecular forces, we are motivated by …

Biosilica-based immobilization strategy for label-free OWLS sensors

2013

Abstract In the last years, a new group of enzymes, so-called silicateins, have been identified and characterized, which form the axial filaments of the spicules of the siliceous sponges, consisting of amorphous silica. Silicateins are able to catalyze the polycondensation and deposition of silica at mild conditions (low temperature and physiological pH). By means of these enzymes it is possible for the first time to produce silica nanostructures biocatalytically, which opens new ways for construction of biosensors. The cDNAs encoding the responsible enzymes have been isolated and the proteins can be produced in a recombinant way. Here we demonstrate the silicatein-mediated biosilica format…

Reversible tuning of a block-copolymer nanostructure via electric fields

2007

Block copolymers consisting of incompatible components self-assemble into microphase-separated domains yielding highly regular structures with characteristic length scales of the order of several tens of nanometres. Therefore, in the past decades, block copolymers have gained considerable potential for nanotechnological applications, such as in nanostructured networks and membranes, nanoparticle templates and high-density data storage media. However, the characteristic size of the resulting structures is usually determined by molecular parameters of the constituent polymer molecules and cannot easily be adjusted on demand. Here, we show that electric d.c. fields can be used to tune the char…

Self-assembly of small gold colloids with functionalized gold nanorods.

2007

We present a general strategy to stabilize gold nanorod suspensions with mono- and bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) and to attach a controlled number of nanoparticles or biomolecules. Characterization by gel electrophoresis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical dark-field microscopy show the specific binding of functionalized nanorods to their target while avoiding nonspecific binding to substrates, matrices, and other particles. Such nanorods are well suited for self-assembly of nanostructures and single-molecule labeling.
