National days between commemoration and celebration: remembering 1947 and 1960 in Madagascar

2013

Today Madagascar officially celebrates two national holidays. 29 March is dedicated to the memory of anticolonial resistance in 1947, the commemoration of the dead and the decoration of surviving combatants. 26 June in contrast is celebrated as Madagascar's return to independence in 1960 with parades, cultural performances, singing and dancing. But consecutive governments have altered state politics of commemoration and non-state actors have influenced the way in which 1947 and 1960 are remembered. This study of national days in Madagascar offers an interpretation of the different ways the two key events of national history have been remembered within the fifty years since Independence. Internet service provider liability and new duties: robo-takedown, policy of termination, notice and take steps The essay — after clarifying the outlines of the two main “safe harbor” provisions which limit the liability of online service providers as regards copyright infringement in the Western Legal Tradition, namely the U.S. section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and articles 12 through 15 of the EU Directive on e-commerce — enquires the way in which the most recent case-law, respectively that of the U.S. Federal Courts and of the European Court of Justice, is enhancing the standard of protection and the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Existentially closed central extensions of locally finite p-groups

1986

Throughout, p will be a fixed prime, and will denote the class of all locally finite p-groups. For a fixed Abelian p-group A, we letwhere ζ(P) denotes the centre of P. Notice that A is not a class in the usual group-theoretic sense, since it is not closed under isomorphisms.

On saturation and related parameters following Guth's ATD colour-vision model

2001

In this work, we have examined the influence of different parameters both on perceived saturation and saturation discrimination with unrelated colours, on the basis of S. L. Guth's CA90 colour-vision model and its subsequent modifications. Our analysis of perceived saturation covered (1) spectral saturation functions at constant luminance, (2) saturation functions in constant colorimetric purity loci, (3) saturation vs. colorimetric purity functions, (4) saturation vs. luminance functions in the 1–1000 td range, and, finally, (5) the equal saturation loci in the xy color diagram. Regarding saturation discrimination, we focused on (1) saturation thresholds from white and from the locus, (2) …

Parental working time patterns and children's socioemotional wellbeing: Comparing working parents in Finland, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands

2017

Abstract This cross-national study examined the connections between parental working time patterns (i.e., regular day work vs. nonstandard working hours) and children's socio-emotional wellbeing defined in terms of internalizing and externalizing problems and prosocial behavior. We also examined how the total number of hours worked, changes in work schedules, working overtime at short notice, and having an influence over one's work schedules were linked with children's wellbeing. Data were collected by a web survey from Finnish ( n  = 358), Dutch ( n  = 200) and British ( n  = 267) parents with children aged 3 to 12 years. The results showed, that in all three countries parents working nons…

The Analysis of the Relationship between the Level of the Public Expenditure for Investments and de Degree of Development of the Society in Romania

2013

Abstract Public expenditure for development have a decisive role in Romania in the economic recovery of the country, in a first step, but at the same time taking into account the EU's objectives. Romania during 2000-2010 had the largest public investment expenditures across European countries as a share of GDP, and in 2011 was ranked second after Poland. But while the share of GDP allocated to public investment in Romania is above the average of EU countries, in the economy these expenditures have been seen too little. Looking at Lisbon Index score, which tracks the performance of member countries to achieve the objectives of the current Lisbon strategy, one can notice that Romania is on th…
