Tumour-growth inhibition by induced hyperglycaemia/hyperlactacidaemia and localized hyperthermia.
1996
The present study was undertaken to exploit pathophysiological properties of solid tumours for a tumour-specific therapy. Experiments were carried out on DS-sarcomas implanted s.c. in the hind foot dorsum of Sprague Dawley rats. Treatment strategies included tumour acidification, lactate accumulation and disturbance of the microcirculation by induced systemic hyperglycaemia/hyperlact-acidaemia (15-25/10 mmol/L; for 60 min) as well as localized hyperthermia (water-bath; 43 degrees C, 30 min.). A special infusion solution was developed for the systemic treatment containing glucose, lactic acid and organic buffer without inorganic ions. Growth kinetics of tumour volume and animal survival were…
Vergleich der Wertigkeit von Magnetresonanztomographie und Computertomographie bei Patienten mit Nelson-Syndrom
1992
The hypophyses of 13 patients with Nelson syndrome following bilateral adrenalectomy were examined by MRI and CT. Diffuse enlargement of the hypophysis was demonstrated in 8 patients by CT and in 9 by MRI. Compared with CT, MRI provides better demonstration of tumour development, such as abnormal convexity of the cranial margin of the hypophysis (MRI 4/13, CT 1/13), displacement of the infundibulum (MRI 4/13, CT 0/13) or optic chiasm (MRI 2/13, CT 0/13). MRI also provides diagnostically important differentiation between scar tissue and recurrence of tumour following hypophysectomy (MRI 1/3, CT 0/3) and more accurate demonstration of infiltration of the cavernous sinus (MRI 4/13, CT 2/13). C…
Archaeometric evidence attesting production of indigenous archaic pottery at Monte Polizzo (Western Sicily)
2012
Excavations at the proto-urban indigenous settlement of Monte Polizzo (western Sicily) have not yielded so far any evidence of in-situ ceramic production (i.e. kiln structures). However several archaeological concerns put forward to consider it as a likely production centre of pottery during the Archaic age. In this paper a first attempt to check the compositional correspondence between ceramic fabrics and local clay sources has been made. A comprehensive archaeometric investigation of native pottery, mainly composed of matte-painted table ware dated from the 7th to the 4th century BC, recovered from the Acropolis of Monte Polizzo has allowed the identification of five distinct ‘Paste Compo…
Membranous dysmenorrhoea in a woman undergoing hormone replacement preparation for embryo transfer - a peculiar case
2023
Membranous dysmenorrhoea is an uncommon condition characterized by the spontaneous flaking of endometrium into a single piece that maintains the shape of the uterus. The common symptom of membranous dysmenorrhoea is a colicky pain caused by uterine contractions. Because only a limited number of cases have been published in the literature, the case report we present is peculiar. This report describes a case of membranous dysmenorrhoea that occurred after an artificial frozen thawed embryo transfer cycle using vaginal progesterone. The patient, during hormone replacement treatment, reported an intense abdominal colicky pain resulting in the loss of membranous endometrial tissue. A histopathol…
A Saturation Model of the Synchronous Reluctance Motor and its Identification by Genetic Algorithms
2018
This paper proposes a complete saturation model of the Synchronous Reluctance Motor (Syn1231), accounting for both the self-saturation and cross-saturation effects. This model is based on an analytical relationship between the stator flux and current components, and is characterized by parameters presenting an interesting physical interpretation, differently from many other saturation model in the scientific literature. It proposes also an identification technique of such a model based on stand-still tests, without the need of locking the rotor. The proposed saturation model permits the complete description of the magnetic behaviour of the machine with 8 parameters, fewer than those require…
Permian of South Europe and its interregional correlation
2000
This contribution is a synthesis of knowledge about the Permian of South Europe, which mainly consists of continental, terrigenous and igneous deposits. Marine sediments crop out in a few Italian areas (eastern Southern Alps, central-southern sectors of the peninsula and Sicily), as well as spread from the ex-Yugoslavia to the present Mediterranean sea, where they represent the westermost patterns of the old Tethys. In this context, data and interpretations vary sensibly from one region to another. Despite this, we have tried to establish the most typical events or features. Although the correlation and nature of some are still in doubt, the effort of reconstructing them is significant. Val…
Immediate and flapless implant insertion and provisionalization using autogenous bone grafts in the esthetic zone: 5-year results.
2017
Objectives As the 2-year results for immediately inserted and provisionalized implants have been reported, it remained an open issue, whether the initially high success rates and the esthetic outcome remain stable for longer observation periods. Therefore, this prospective study examines the 5-year hard and soft tissue changes at implants placed in the anterior maxilla. Material and methods Meanwhile, 37 microthreaded implants were placed in 21 patients into extraction sockets with and without facial bone deficiencies by a flapless approach. Facial gaps and bony defects were grafted with autogenous bone chips. The implants were immediately provisionalized. The primary outcome parameters wer…
