Implementation of augmented reality in operative dentistry learning.
2017
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of augmented reality (AR) in the gaining of knowledge and skills amongst dental students in the design of cavity preparations and analyse their degree of satisfaction. Material and methods AR cavity models were prepared for use with computers and mobile devices. Forty-one students were divided into two groups (traditional teaching methods vs AR). Questionnaires were designed to evaluate knowledge and skills, with the administration of a satisfaction questionnaire for those using AR. The degree of compliance with the standards in cavity design was assessed. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare knowledge and skills between the two groups, and the Wilc…
A comparison study of moclobemide and doxepin in major depression with special reference to effects on sexual dysfunction
1993
A double-blind parallel-group comparison study of moclobemide versus doxepin in 237 patients with major depression confirmed that moclobemide was equal in efficacy and better tolerated than doxepin. It was less sedating and caused fewer anticholinergic adverse events as measured by the UKU side-effect rating scale. Unexpectedly, moclobemide therapy more often than doxepin resulted in increased sexual desire. An exploratory analysis of UKU-measured symptoms of impaired sexual function prior to commencement of the study revealed that moclobemide more often than doxepin led to an improvement of reduced libido and impaired erection, ejaculation and orgasm. This finding is compatible with the as…
The role of anticipatory postural adjustments during whole body forward reaching movements
1998
THE purpose of this study was to examine the role of anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) in the execution of forward oriented whole body reaching movements. From the standing position, eight healthy subjects were asked to reach an object placed at 45 cm from the feet, at both naturally paced and fast speeds. Electromyographic signals of six antagonistic muscles were analysed in conjunction with centre of mass (CM) displacements, centre of foot pressure displacements and resultant ground reaction forces. Results revealed that APAs created necessary angular momentum of body segments for effective task execution. These results suggest that APAs can initiate movements conducted from a fixe…
Antithrombotic treatment in real-life atrial fibrillation patients: a report from the Euro Heart Survey on Atrial Fibrillation
2006
Aims To describe guideline adherence and application of different stroke risk stratification schemes regarding antithrombotic therapy in real-life atrial fibrillation (AF) patients and to assess which factors influence antithrombotic management decisions. Methods and results The Euro Heart Survey enrolled 5333 AF patients in 35 countries, in 2003 and 2004. Prescription of antithrombotic drugs, especially oral anticoagulation (OAC), was hardly tailored to the patient's stroke risk profile as indicated by the joint guidelines of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and the European Society of Cardiology, ACCP guidelines, or CHADS2 and Framingham risk scores. In mult…
Relation between Sexual Dysfunctions and Epilepsy, Type of Epilepsy, Type of Antiepileptic Drugs: A Prospective Study
2017
Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of sexual dysfunctions in males with epilepsy, the type of epilepsy, the frequency of seizures, the type of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), the serum hormonal profile and the presence of psychiatric comorbidity. Methods Sixty-one patients focused on type of epilepsy, frequency of seizures, AEDs, hormonal profile and presence of mood disorders. We excluded all patients with severe neurologic and psychiatric impairment and patient who were not able to fill questionnaires. Mean age was 31.2 years (range 18-50 years); 31 patients (50.8%) had an idiopathic generalised epilepsy and 30 (49.2%) a focal epilepsy; among them, latter 18 (60%…
Effects of Training-Induced Fatigue on Pacing Patterns in 40-km Cycling Time Trials
2014
In some endurance sports, athletes complete several competitions within a short period, resulting in accumulated fatigue. It is unclear whether fatigued athletes choose the same pacing pattern (PP) as when they have recovered. This study aimed to analyze effects of fatigue on PP of cyclists during a 40-km time trial (TT).Twenty-three male cyclists (28.8 ± 7.6 yr) completed three 40-km TT on a cycle ergometer. TT were conducted before (TT1) and after (TT2) a 6-d training period. A third TT was carried out after 72 h of recovery (TT3). Training days consisted of two cycling sessions: mornings, 1 h at 95% of lactate threshold or 3 × 5 × 30 s all-out sprint; afternoons, 3 h at 80% individual ana…
Thrombotic events in systemic lupus erythematosus. Its association with acquired and inherited thrombophilic defects.
2008
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is characterised by increased venous and arterial thrombotic risk. Although antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs) have been shown to be related with thrombotic tendency in these patients, in more than 40% of them, thrombosis occurs without the presence of such antibodies. We analysed the association of venous and arterial thrombotic events with acquired (anticardiolipin antibodies (ACAs) and lupus anticoagulant (LA)) and inherited (antithrombin (AT), protein C (PC), protein S (PS) deficiencies, factor V Leiden and the prothrombin G20210A mutation), thrombophilic risk factors in 86 SLE patients and 89 healthy controls. Patients showed a higher significant perc…
Treatment of acute venous thromboembolism with dabigatran or warfarin and pooled analysis
2014
Background— Dabigatran and warfarin have been compared for the treatment of acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) in a previous trial. We undertook this study to extend those findings. Methods and Results— In a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy trial of 2589 patients with acute VTE treated with low-molecular-weight or unfractionated heparin for 5 to 11 days, we compared dabigatran 150 mg twice daily with warfarin. The primary outcome, recurrent symptomatic, objectively confirmed VTE and related deaths during 6 months of treatment occurred in 30 of the 1279 dabigatran patients (2.3%) compared with 28 of the 1289 warfarin patients (2.2%; hazard ratio, 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.…
Plantar pressures determinants in mild Hallux Valgus.
2010
While podobarometric techniques have been applied to the study of pressures in Hallux Valgus (HV), little is known about its clinical and radiological determinants. So, the aim of the present study was to determine the plantar pressure pattern in participants with mild HV, comparing to a control group, and their clinical and anthropometric determinants. Biofoot/IBV(®) in-shoe system was used to evaluate 79 participants with mild HV. Computerized measurements of the 1st intermetatarsal angle (IMA) and the hallux abductus angle (HAA) were made on antero-posterior radiographs. The clinical outcome was assessed using the AOFAS score. The dependent baropodometric variables and the independent cl…
Analysis of the upper cervical spine stiffness during axial rotation: A comparative study among patients with tension-type headache or migraine and a…
2017
Abstract Background Many studies reported the implication of the cervical musculoskeletal system in patients with tension type headache and migraine. The objective of this study is to investigate the upper cervical spine stiffness features in axial rotation among headache patients in comparison with a healthy population. Methods 48 subjects including 30 migraine patients with/without aura and 18 patients with tension-type headache, aged between 18 and 60 years (mean 36, SD 11 years) have been evaluated. Stiffness measurements were carried out for passive axial rotation using a torque meter device. The flexion-rotation test was used to emphasize assessment of the upper cervical spine. Findin…
