Abstract Novel diorganotin(IV) derivatives of l -Arginine (HArg), N α -( tert -Butoxycarbonyl)- l -Arginine (Boc–Arg–OH) and l -Ala- l -Arg (H 2 Ala–Arg), H 2 NC( NH)NH(CH 2 ) 3 CH(NHR′)CO 2 H, where R′ = H in HArg, R′ = C(O)OC(CH 3 ) 3 in Boc–Arg–OH, R′ = H 2 NCH(CH 3 )CO in H 2 Ala–Arg and triorganotin(IV) derivatives of Boc–Arg–OH have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complexes were investigated by FT-IR and 119 Sn Mossbauer in the solid state and by 1 H, 13 C, 119 Sn and 1 H– 1 H COSY NMR spectroscopy, in solution. Role of vitreous matrix on the optical activity of Ge-doped silica

Abstract We report an experimental study on the relationship between the optical activity of Ge-oxygen deficient centers and dynamic properties and conformational heterogeneity of vitreous matrix in silica. We focus our attention on the absorption band at ∼5.2 eV (B 2β ) and on the two related emissions at ∼4.2 eV (α E ) and at ∼3.1 eV (β). From the temperature dependence of B 2β band we estimate a mean energy value of 26 meV for local vibrational modes coupled to the electronic transition, suggesting that the chromophore and its surrounding have access to low frequency dynamics. Irradiation induced Germanium Lone Pair Centers in Ge-doped Sol-gel SiO2: luminescence lifetime and temperature dependence

We studied the temperature dependence of the emission profile and of the lifetime, measured at 4.3 eV, related to the germanium lone pair centers (GLPC) induced by gamma ray at 5 MGy in a Ge-doped silica sample and in an analogous sample irradiated at 10 MGy, in which by a successive thermal treatment up to 415 °C the induced GLPC has been modified (named residual GLPC in the following). The measurements were recorded in the temperature range 10-300 K using an excitation of ∼5.2 eV. Temperature dependance of the generation and decay of E’ centers induced in silica by 4.7eV laser radiation

We report a study of the generation of silicon dangling bonds (E' centers) induced in fused silica by 4.7 eV laser irradiation in the 10 200 K the induced defects undergo a post-irradiation decay due to their reaction with mobile H(2). The interplay between generation and annealing gives rise to a bell-shaped temperature dependence of the concentration of induced E' centers, peaking at 250 K

History and results of the Riga dynamo experiments

2008

On 11 November 1999, a self-exciting magnetic eigenfield was detected for the first time in the Riga liquid sodium dynamo experiment. We report on the long history leading to this event, and on the subsequent experimental campaigns which provided a wealth of data on the kinematic and the saturated regime of this dynamo. The present state of the theoretical understanding of both regimes is delineated, and some comparisons with other laboratory dynamo experiments are made.

Experimental benchmarking of quantum control in zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance

Zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provides complementary analysis modalities to those of high-field NMR and allows for ultra-high-resolution spectroscopy and measurement of untruncated spin-spin interactions. Unlike for the high-field case, however, universal quantum control -- the ability to perform arbitrary unitary operations -- has not been experimentally demonstrated in zero-field NMR. This is because the Larmor frequency for all spins is identically zero at zero field, making it challenging to individually address different spin species. Measurement of untruncated nuclear spin interactions via zero- to ultralow-field nuclear magnetic resonance

Zero- to ultra-low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (ZULF NMR) provides a new regime for the measurement of nuclear spin-spin interactions free from effects of large magnetic fields, such as truncation of terms that do not commute with the Zeeman Hamiltonian. One such interaction, the magnetic dipole-dipole coupling, is a valuable source of spatial information in NMR, though many terms are unobservable in high-field NMR, and the coupling averages to zero under isotropic molecular tumbling. Cytotoxic labdane diterpenes and bisflavonoid atropisomers from leaves of Araucaria bidwillii

Abstract Chemical investigation of a methanolic extract of leaves from Araucaria bidwillii (Araucariaceae) from Egypt afforded four new labdane diterpenoidal metabolites (1–4) together with one known diterpene, 7-oxocallitrisic acid (5), two triterpenoidal metabolites, 2-O-acetyl-11-keto-boswellic acid (6) and β-sitosterol-3-O-glucopyranoside (7), phloretic acid (8), and two methylated bisflavonoids, agathisflavone-4′,7,7″-trimethyl ether (9) and cupressuflavone-4′,7,7″-trimethyl ether (10). Abstract (Z)-N-methyl-C-4-substituted phenyl nitrones –O+N(Me)=C(H)R (Z-2a R = 4-ClC6H4, Z-2b R = 4-NO2C6H4, Z-2c R = 4-CH3OC6H4) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, 1H, 13C and DEPT-135 NMR spectroscopy and also by single crystal X-ray diffraction (in the case of Z-2a and Z-2b). Bile acid–cysteamine conjugates: Structural properties, gelation, and toxicity evaluation

Abstract Design, synthesis, and characterization of six novel bile acid–cysteamine conjugates together with investigation of their structural studies, gelation properties, and preliminary toxicity evaluation, are reported. Solid state properties of selected compounds were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy. N-(2-thioethyl)-3α,7α,12α-trihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-amide was shown to exhibit (pseudo)polymorphism, and a single crystal structure of its non-stoichiometric hydrate is reported herein.
