Heterogeneous and homogeneous crystal nucleation in a colloidal model system of charged spheres at low metastabilities

We have studied the nucleation kinetics in the bulk as well as at the container walls of a charged sphere colloidal model system under salt-free conditions close to the fluid–crystal phase boundary. We determined time resolved nucleation rate densities for heterogeneous nucleation on the wall, the corresponding nucleation rate densities for homogeneous nucleation and compare the resulting nucleation barrier heights. The homogeneous barrier height decreases exponentially with increasing metastability, while the heterogeneous barrier displays a sharp transition from a constant value close to the phase boundary to zero at higher metastability. Small changes in particle-size distribution dramatically delay and enhance nucleation in hard sphere colloidal suspensions.

We present hard-sphere crystallization kinetics for three samples with small differences in polydispersity. We show that an increase in polydispersity of 1% is sufficient to cause dramatic changes in the crystallization kinetics: Crystallization is delayed by almost one decade in time and quantitative and qualitative changes in the crystallization scenario are observed. Surprisingly the nucleation rate density is enhanced by almost a factor of 10. We interpret these results in terms of polydispersity limited growth, where local fractionation processes lead to a delayed but faster nucleation.
Two-Step Crystallization Kinetics in Colloidal Hard-Sphere Systems

The crystallization kinetics of colloidal hard spheres was studied using a special Bragg spectrometer with high sensitivity. In contrast with the classical scenario we observe a two-step nucleation process: the number of crystallites increases slowly at early times, followed by a dramatic reduction at intermediate times, prior to undergoing a rapid increase at late times. We explain these results in terms of a polydispersity limited growth of crystallites, where the crystallization at early times is governed by local fractionation processes, leading to a long delay prior to final crystallization.
Microstructural evolution of mullites produced from single-phase gels

The crystalline microstructure of mullites obtained by heating monophasic gels has been investigated. Gels with alumina to silica molar ratio of 3:2 (as in secondary mullite) and 2:1 (as in primary mullite) were prepared by gelling mixtures of aluminium nitrate and tetraethylorthosilicate. Phase transformations were induced by heating the gel precursors, with different final treatment temperatures between 1173 and 1873 K. We studied the homogeneous nucleation kinetics of an aqueous suspension of charged colloidal spheres under de-ionized conditions. Samples of equilibrium crystalline structure were shear molten and the metastable melt left to solidify after cessation of shear. At low particle number densities n, corresponding to low metastability of the melt, nucleation was monitored directly via video microscopy. A new approach is described for probing domains of ordered self-assemblies of amphiphilic monolayers at the aqueous solution interface. The method has potential importance for the study of membrane structure, Langmuir-Blodgett films, and nucleation processes of two-and three-dimensional crystals. Electron diffraction (ED) patterns indicative of two-dimensional crystalline self-assembly were obtained from samples, which were examined by cryo-electron microscopy, of monolayers of water-insoluble amphiphiles on vitrified aqueour substrates. Synthesis And Sorptive Properties Of Dodecasil 1 H With An Acessible Pore System

Abstract The synthesis of Dodecasil 1H was studied in the system SiO2/1-adamantylamine/NH3/water with the objective of controlling the particle size and the morphology of the crystals. Since nucleation occurs in a very early stage of the synthesis, the heating rate to the final temperature have a strong influence on both parameters. Using seed crystals and such a heating programme, the expensive template 1-adamantylamine can be reduced to so small amounts, that a nearly template free pore system is achieved. The emptiness of the pore system was demonstrated from adsorption measurement using He and H2.
Subvisible cirrus clouds - a dynamical system approach

Ice clouds, so-called cirrus clouds, occur very frequently in the tropopause region. A special class are subvisible cirrus clouds with an optical depth lower than 0.03, associated with very low ice crystal number concentrations. The dominant pathway for the formation of these clouds is not known well. It is often assumed that heterogeneous nucleation on solid aerosol particles is the preferred mechanism although homogeneous freezing of aqueous solution droplets might be possible, since these clouds occur in the low-temperature regime T < 235 K. gamma-Tubulin is typically associated with microtubule organising centres, such as the centrosome, and appears to mediate microtubule nucleation. Centrosomes are usually not found in higher plants, but active genes homologous to gamma-tubulin have been identified in the plant kingdom, including the angiosperms Arabidopsis, maize and rice. We have isolated and characterised gamma-tubulin cDNA sequences of two further angiosperm species, barley and tobacco.
