Growth, structural and optical properties of GaN/AlN and GaN/GaInN nanowire heterostructures

2012

Abstract After discussing the GaN NW nucleation issue, we will present the structural properties of axial and radial (i.e. core/shell) GaN/AlN NW heterostructures and adress the issue of critical thickness during the growth of such heterostructures. Next, we will present the growth of InGaN NWs on a GaN NW base. It will be shown that the morphology and structural properties of the InGaN NW sections depend on the In content: for high In content a flat top is observed and plastic relaxation is occuring, with mismatch dislocations formed at the InGaN/GaN interface. By contrast, for In content below 25% InGaN NWs exhibit a pencil-like shape assigned to a purely elastic strain relaxation process…

Capillary Imbibition, Crystallization, and Local Dynamics of Hyperbranched Poly(ethylene oxide) Confined to Nanoporous Alumina

2017

The crystallization and dynamics of hyperbranched poly(ethylene oxide) (hbPEO), obtained from the direct random copolymerization of EO and glycidol (PEO-co-PG), are studied both in bulk and within nanoporous alumina (AAO). Copolymerization decreases the degree of crystallinity and lowers the crystallization and melting temperatures as compared to linear PEO. The dynamics of capillary imbibition within AAO followed the t1/2 prediction but is slower than predicted by the classical Lucas–Washburn equation. The most prominent effect of confinement is the change in nucleation mechanism—from heterogeneous nucleation in bulk to homogeneous nucleation inside AAO. The homogeneous nucleation temperat…

Ultrathin metal films and inorganic clusters via thermodesorption of LB films

1991

Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers of cadmium arachidate and ferric stearate were investigated during heating in order to derive information on processes involved in thermodesorption and on the inorganic microstructures left on the substrate after thermodesorption. We studied these processes by X-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), interference enhanced reflection (IeR), Nomarsky microscopy, electron microprobe analysis and in the case of Fe57-ions by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). Two different mechanisms of desorption were observed. In the case of cadmium arachidate multilayers it is shown that before desorption the film ruptures laterally and then forms droplets.…

Aging of Nanosized ZnO Modified Polyoxymethylene Blends with Ethylene–octene Copolymer

2015

The influence of ethylene–octene copolymer and zinc oxide (ZnO) on structure and tensile stress–strain behavior of polyoxymethylene were investigated before and after ultraviolet weathering. Addition of ZnO considerably improved stress–strain characteristics of the ultraviolet-irradiation impaired composites. Crystallinities of ultraviolet-irradiated composites were affected by numerous competitive processes, including suppression of crystallization in the presence of multiple components in the system, nucleation induced by nanofiller, secondary crystallization and amorphization because of the chain scissions of the macromolecules. Addition of ZnO considerably improved stability of the comp…

Dynamics of Structure Formation in Model Membranes and in Adsorbed Layers

1991

Unconventional and new ways to prepare ultrathin films with defined lateral distribution of components are described. These methods make use of two different principles: (1) Films with two coexisting phases are prepared and an active component preferentially partitions into one of the phases. Domain formation and interdomain distance largely depend on the kinetics of nucleation and growth and can thus be controlled. This is demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy with monolayers on water surfaces as well as with monolayers formed by co-adsorption of a fatty acid and a dye on silicon. (2) The support is structured by conventional techniques, in our case by photolithography. Adsorption or des…

Polymeric scaffolds prepared via thermally induced phase separation: Tuning of structure and morphology

2008

Scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications like dermal reconstruction were prepared by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/dioxane/water. The experimental protocol consisted of three consecutive steps, a first quench from the homogeneous solution to an appropriate demixing temperature (within the metastable region), a holding stage for a given residence time, and a final quench from the demixing temperature to a low temperature (within the unstable region). A large variety of morphologies, in terms of average pore size and interconnection, were obtained upon modifying the demixing time and temperature, owing to the interplay of nucleat…

Nanoconfined mixed Li and Mg borohydrides as materials for solid state hydrogen storage

2012

Abstract Several mixtures of LiBH4 and Mg(BH4)2 borohydrides in different stoichiometric ratios (1:0, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 0:1), prepared by high energy ball milling, have been investigated with X-ray powder diffraction and thermal programmed desorption (TPD) volumetric analysis to test the dehydrogenation kinetics in correlation with the physical mixture composition. Afterwards mixed and unmixed borohydrides were dispersed on high specific surface area ball milled graphite by means of the solvent infiltration technique. BET and statistical thickness methods were used to characterize the support surface properties, and SEM micrographs gave a better understanding of the preparation techniques. It …

Nucleant layer effect on nanocolumnar ZnO films grown by electrodeposition

2013

Different ZnO nanostructured films were electrochemically grown, using an aqueous solution based on ZnCl2, on three types of transparent conductive oxides grow on commercial ITO (In2O3:Sn)-covered glass substrates: (1) ZnO prepared by spin coating, (2) ZnO prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering, and (3) commercial ITO-covered glass substrates. Although thin, these primary oxide layers play an important role on the properties of the nanostructured films grown on top of them. Additionally, these primary oxide layers prevent direct hole combination when used in optoelectronic devices. Structural and optical characterizations were carried out by scanning electron microscopy, atomic for…

Growth, structural and optical properties of AlGaN nanowires in the whole composition range.

2013

International audience; We report on the growth of AlxGa1-xN nanowires by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy for x in the 0.3-0.8 range. Based on a combination of macro- and micro-photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy experiments, it is shown that the structural and optical properties of AlGaN NWs are governed by the presence of compositional fluctuations associated with strongly localized electronic states. A growth model is proposed, which suggests that, depending on growth temperature and metal adatom density, macroscopic composition fluctuations are mostly of kinetic origin and are directly related to the nucleation of the AlGaN na…
