Conservative surgery of renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract From 1967 to 1985 conservative surgery (enucleation, n = 49; partial resection, n = 7) was performed for renal tumors in 57 patients (age 31-77, mean 54.8 years). Imperative indications for conservative surgery (n = 29) were chronic renal failure, benign pathology of contralateral kidney, functional or anatomical solitary kidney, and bilateral tumors. Elective conservative surgery (n = 28) was done for small, peripherally located lesions, in cases of uncertain malignancy and in one tumor detected by chance during stone surgery. Conservative surgery of renal cell tumors in 140 patients: 21 years of experience.

Operative method, course and complications were analyzed retrospectively in 140 patients who underwent a conservative operation for renal tumor between June 1969 and December 1990. In 53 patients (20 women and 33 men, mean age 61.2 years, range 38 to 77 years, with 49 renal cell carcinomas and 4 benign renal tumors) there was an imperative indication for an organ preserving operation because nephrectomy would have made dialysis obligatory. NEPHRON SPARING SURGERY FOR CENTRAL RENAL TUMORS: EXPERIENCE WITH 33 CASES

Purpose: Nephron sparing surgery is standard treatment for small, peripherally located renal cell carcinoma. In patients with a solitary kidney, bilateral tumors or impaired renal function nephron sparing surgery provides the only option to nephrectomy and subsequent hemodialysis or transplantation. The effectiveness of decompression as initial treatment for jaw cysts : a 10-year retrospective study

Nucleation particles in diesel exhaust: composition inferred from in situ mass spectrometric analysis.

Mass spectrometric measurements of size and composition of diesel exhaust particles have been performed under various conditions: chassis dynamometer tests, field measurements near a German motorway, and individual car chasing. Nucleation particles consisting of volatile sulfate and organic material could be detected both at the chassis dynamometer test facility and during individual car chasing. We found evidence that if nucleation occurs, sulfuric acid/water is the nucleating agent. Low-volatile organics species condense only on the preexisting sulfuric acid/water clusters. The kinetic behavior of insulin fibrillation is determined by heterogeneous nucleation pathways

When subjected to acidic conditions and high temperature, insulin is known to produce fibrils that display the common properties of disease amyloids. Thus, clarifying the mechanisms of insulin fibrillation can help the general understanding of amyloidal aggregation. Insulin fibrillation exhibits a very sharp time dependence, with a pronounced lag phase and subsequent explosive growth of amyloidal aggregates. Here we show that the initial stages of this process can be well described by exponential growth of the fibrillated proteins. This indicates that the process is mainly controlled by a secondary nucleation pathway.

Secondary nucleation and accessible surface in insulin amyloid fibril formation.

At low pH insulin is highly prone to self-assembly into amyloid fibrils. The process has been proposed to be affected by the existence of secondary nucleation pathways, in which already formed fibrils are able to catalyze the formation of new fibrils. In this work, we studied the fibrillation process of human insulin in a wide range of protein concentrations. Thioflavin T fluorescence was used for its ability to selectively detect amyloid fibrils, by mechanisms that involve the interaction between the dye and the accessible surface of the fibrils.
