Analysis of the Intermediate-State Contributions to Neutrinoless Double β− Decays

2016

A comprehensive analysis of the structure of the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of neutrinoless double beta-minus (0νβ-β-) decays to the0+ground and first excited states is performed in terms of the contributing multipole states in the intermediate nuclei of0νβ-β-transitions. We concentrate on the transitions mediated by the light (l-NMEs) Majorana neutrinos. As nuclear model we use the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a realistic two-nucleon interaction based on the Bonn one-boson-exchangeGmatrix. In the computations we include the appropriate short-range correlations, nucleon form factors, and higher-order nucleonic weak currents and restore the isospi…

Odd parity bottom-flavored baryon resonances

2013

The LHCb Collaboration has recently observed two narrow baryon resonances with beauty. Their masses and decay modes look consistent with the quark model orbitally excited states Lambda(b)(5912) and Lambda(b)*(5920), with quantum numbers J(P) = 1/2(-) and 3/2(-), respectively. We predict the existence of these states within a unitarized meson-baryon coupled-channel dynamical model, which implements heavy-quark spin symmetry. Masses, quantum numbers and couplings of these resonances to the different meson-baryon channels are obtained. We find that the resonances Lambda(0)(b)(5912) and Lambda(0)(b)(5920) are heavy-quark spin symmetry partners, which naturally explains their approximate mass de…

On the pion cloud of the nucleon

2003

We evaluate the two--pion contribution to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors by use of dispersion analysis and chiral perturbation theory. After subtraction of the rho--meson component, we calculate the distributions of charge and magnetization in coordinate space, which can be interpreted as the effects of the pion cloud. We find that the charge distribution of this pion cloud effect peaks at distances of about 0.3 fm. Furthermore, we calculate the contribution of the pion cloud to the isovector charges and radii of the nucleon.

Chiral Symmetry of Baryons

2001

We study chiral symmetry aspects of the positive and negative parity baryons by identifying them with linear representations of the chiral group $SU(N_{f}) \otimes SU(N_{f})$. It is shown that there are two distinctive schemes: naive and mirror assignments. We construct linear sigma models for baryons in the two assignments and examine their physical implications. Then we investigate properties of the naive and mirror nucleons microscopically by using QCD interpolating fields. Finally, we propose experiments to distinguish the two chiral assignments for the nucleon.

Parity-violating interactions of cosmic fields with atoms, molecules, and nuclei: Concepts and calculations for laboratory searches and extracting li…

2014

We propose methods and present calculations that can be used to search for evidence of cosmic fields by investigating the parity-violating effects, including parity nonconservation amplitudes and electric dipole moments, that they induce in atoms. The results are used to constrain important fundamental parameters describing the strength of the interaction of various cosmic fields with electrons, protons, and neutrons. Candidates for such fields are dark matter (including axions) and dark energy, as well as several more exotic sources described by standard-model extensions. Existing parity nonconservation experiments in Cs, Dy, Yb, and Tl are combined with our calculations to directly place …

Observation and studies of double J/psi production at the Tevatron

2014

We present the observation of doubly-produced $J/\psi$ mesons with the D0 detector at Fermilab in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. The production cross section for both singly and doubly-produced $J/\psi$ mesons is measured using a sample with an integrated luminosity of 8.1fb$^{-1}$. For the first time, the double $J/\psi$ production cross section is separated into contributions due to single and double parton scatterings. Using these measurements, we determine the effective cross section $\sigma_{eff}$, a parameter characterizing an effective spatial area of the parton-parton interactions and related to the parton spatial density inside the nucleon.

Light baryons and their electromagnetic interactions in the covariant constituent quark model

2012

We extend the confined covariant constituent quark model that was previously developed by us for mesons to the baryon sector. In our numerical calculation we use the same values for the constituent quark masses and the infrared cutoff as have been previously used in the meson sector. In a first application we describe the static properties of the proton and neutron, and the $\Lambda$-hyperon (magnetic moments and charge radii) and the behavior of the nucleon form factors at low momentum transfers. We discuss in some detail the conservation of gauge invariance of the electromagnetic transition matrix elements in the presence of a nonlocal coupling of the baryons to the three constituent quar…

Gluon Polarisation in the Nucleon and Longitudinal Double Spin Asymmetries from Open Charm Muoproduction

2009

The gluon polarisation in the nucleon has been determined by detecting charm production via D0 meson decay to charged K and pi in polarised muon scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuteron target. The data were taken by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN between 2002 and 2006 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.8 fb^-1. The dominant underlying process of charm production is the photon-gluon fusion to a cc-bar pair. A leading order QCD approach gives an average gluon polarisation of (Delta g/g)_x= -0.49 +- 0.27(stat) +- 0.11(syst) at a scale mu^2 ~ 13 (GeV/c)^2 and at an average gluon momentum fraction (x) ~ 0.11. The longitudinal cross-section asymmetry for D0 production …

Neutrino-nucleus quasi-elastic and 2p2h interactions up to 10 GeV

2013

We extend to 10 GeV results from a microscopic calculation of charged-current neutrino-nucleus reactions that do not produce a pion in the final state. For the class of events coming from neutrino interactions with two nucleons producing two holes (2p2h), limiting the calculation to three-momentum transfers less than 1.2 GeV produces a two-dimensional distribution in momentum and energy transfer that is roughly constant as a function of energy. The cross section for 2p2h interactions approximately scales with the number of nucleons for isoscalar nuclei, similar to the quasi-elastic cross section. When limited to momentum transfers below 1.2 GeV, the cross section is 26% of the quasi-elastic…
