Modelling of E. colidistribution in coastal areas subjected to combined sewer overflows

2013

Rivers, lakes and the sea were the natural receivers of raw urban waste and storm waters for a long time but the low sustainability of such practice, the increase of population and a renewed environmental sensibility increased researcher interest in the analysis and mitigation of the impact of urban waters on receiving water bodies (RWB). In Europe, the integrated modelling of drainage systems and RWB has been promoted as a promising approach for implementing the Water Framework Directive. A particular interest is given to the fate of pathogens and especially of Escherichia coli, in all the cases in which an interaction between population and the RWB is foreseen. The present paper aims to p…

EFFICACY OF PBO-FRCM STRENGTHENING OF RC COLUMNS IN MRFS

2019

Innovative materials and techniques are widespread used for the strengthening and rehabilita-tion of existing structures. Recent researches have been developed on new fiber reinforced composites in which epoxy resin is replaced by inorganic cementitious material. These kind of cement-based composite material is known as Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrices (FRCM) recently used also in combination with synthetic polymeric fibers named PBO. The efficiency of this new confining system has been demonstrated by a large number of com-pression tests on concrete specimens while there are only few experimental researches on the behaviour of large scale specimens under external action able to simul…

Conduit dynamics and post explosion degassing on Stromboli: A combined UV camera and numerical modeling treatment.

2016

Abstract Recent gas flux measurements have shown that Strombolian explosions are often followed by periods of elevated flux, or “gas codas,” with durations of order a minute. Here we present UV camera data from 200 events recorded at Stromboli volcano to constrain the nature of these codas for the first time, providing estimates for combined explosion plus coda SO2 masses of ≈18–225 kg. Numerical simulations of gas slug ascent show that substantial proportions of the initial gas mass can be distributed into a train of “daughter bubbles” released from the base of the slug, which we suggest, generate the codas, on bursting at the surface. This process could also cause transitioning of slugs i…

Constitutive Numerical Model of FRCM Strips Under Traction

2020

In this paper, the tensile behavior of Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) strips is investigated through Finite Element (FE) models. The most adopted numerical modeling approaches for the simulation of the fiber-matrix interface law are described. Among them, the cohesive model is then used for the generation of FE models which are able to simulate the response under traction of FRCM strips tested in laboratory whose results are available in the technical literature. Tests on basalt, PBO and carbon coated FRCM specimens are taken into account also considering different mechanical ratios of the textile reinforcement. The comparison between FE results and experimental data allows val…

Numerical analysis of light soaking phenomenon in Ruthenium based Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

2017

Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are widely considered one of the most promising third generation photovoltaic devices, especially thanks to their relatively low cost if compared to conventional solar cells. An interesting phenomenon affecting such devices is the so-called light soaking effect, consisting in the increase of cell main electrical parameters after the exposition to solar light. In this work, starting from the experimental characterization carried out on Ruthenium-based DSSCs, we report on a series of numerical analysis performed to better describe the above-mentioned light soaking effect in order to show the relationship between such phenomenon and the main physical paramete…

Numerical Modeling Approaches of FRCMs/SRG Confined Masonry Columns

2019

The Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrices (FRCMs) and Steel Reinforced Grout (SRG) are a promising strengthening solution for existing masonry since inorganic matrix is considerably compatible with historical substrates. The present paper is focused on a Finite Element (FE) analysis of masonry columns confined with FRCM composites developed by Abaqus-code. The masonry columns were modelled using a macro model approach. The model was performed by using the following functions Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) and the Plastic (P) in order to describe the constitutive laws of material for masonry columns and external reinforcement, respectively. Typical failures of FRCM-systems are slippage o…

Numerical modeling and design of a disk-type rotating permanent magnet induction pump

2016

Abstract Electromagnetic induction pumps with rotating permanent magnets appear to be the most promising devices to transport liquid metals in high-temperature applications. Here we present a numerical methodology to simulate the operation of one particular modification of these types of pumps: a disk-type induction pump. The numerical model allows for the calculation and analysis of the flow parameters, including the pressure–flow rate characteristics of the pump. The simulations are based on an iterative fully coupled scheme for electromagnetic and hydrodynamic solvers. The developed model is verified by comparing with experimental data obtained using a Pb-Bi loop test facility, for press…

The Heating of the Solar Corona

2021

The solar corona, the outer atmosphere of the Sun, is heated to millions of Kelvin. This is several orders of magnitude hotter than the photosphere, the optical surface of the Sun, below, and a mystery that has baffled scientists for centuries. The answer to the question of how the solar corona is heated lies in the crucial magnetic connection through the atmosphere of the Sun. The magnetic field that threads the corona extends below the solar photosphere, where convective motions drag the magnetic field footpoints, tangling and twisting them. The chromosphere is the atmospheric layer above the photosphere, and the magnetic field provides an important connection between these layers. The ex…

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of 3D Multilayer Detachment Folding

2013

Multilayer detachment folding, in which a sequence of sedimentary layers is compressed above a weaker salt layer, is a common mode of deformation in thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belts. Here, we investigate the dynamics of multilayer detachment folding with three different viscosities: lower detachment or salt layer, overlying weak layers and competent layers. A semi-analytical solution, based on thick plate analysis of multilayer systems, is used to create mechanical phase diagrams of folding dominant wavelength and growth rate as a function of material parameters. The validity of the phase diagrams is tested and confirmed beyond the nucleation stages of folding by performing several 2D and…

Numerical modeling of blood flow in the internal jugular vein with the use of computational fluid mechanics software.

2021

ObjectivesTo determine the site and nature of altered hemodynamics in pathological internal jugular veins.MethodWith the use of computational fluid mechanics software we simulated blood flow in 3 D models of the internal jugular veins that exhibited different morphologies, including nozzle-like strictures in their upper parts and valves in the lower parts.ResultsIn a majority of models with nozzle-like strictures, especially those positioned asymmetrically, abnormal flow pattern was revealed, with significant flow separation and regions with reversed flow. Abnormal valves had no significant impact on flow in a case of already altered flow evoked by stricture in upper part of the vein.Conclu…
