Non-periodic Discrete Splines

2015

Discrete Splines with different spans were introduced in Sect. 3.3.1. This chapter focuses on a special case of discrete splines whose spans are powers of 2. These splines are discussed in more detail. The Zak transform provides an integral representation of such splines. Discrete exponential splines are introduced. Generators of the discrete-spline spaces are described whose properties are similar to properties of polynomial-spline spaces generators. Interpolating discrete splines provide efficient tools for upsampling 1D and 2D signals. An algorithm for explicit computation of discrete splines is described.

Non-periodic Discrete-Spline Wavelets

2015

This chapter describes wavelet analysis in the spaces of discrete splines whose spans are powers of 2. This wavelet analysis is similar to wavelet analysis in the polynomial-spline spaces. The transforms are based on relations between exponential discrete splines from different resolution scales. Generators of discrete-spline wavelet spaces are described. The discrete-spline wavelet transforms generate wavelet transforms in signal space. Practically, wavelet transforms of signals are implemented by multirate filtering of signals by two-channel filter banks with the downsampling factor 2 (critically sampled filter banks). The filtering implementation is accelerated by switching to the polyph…

Approximate analytic and numerical solutions to Lane-Emden equation via fuzzy modeling method

2012

Published version in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/259494 A novel algorithm, called variable weight fuzzy marginal linearization VWFML method, is proposed. Thismethod can supply approximate analytic and numerical solutions to Lane-Emden equations. And it is easy to be implemented and extended for solving other nonlinear differential equations. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the developed technique.

What’s the resolutive surgery for Pseudo-Ainhum in vohwinkel syndrome? A case report and review of the literature

2021

Vohwinkel Syndrome, also known as Keratoderma Hereditarium Mutilans, is an extremely rare dominant autosomal keratosis. It typically presents with “starfish” keratoses on the knuckles, palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), hearing impairment and mutilating digital constriction bands (pseudoainhum) that cause strangulation, often leading to autoamputation of the affected digit. Both medical and surgical treatment haven’t shown to date consistent results, in the treatment of pseudoainhum. In this study we present the case of a woman with Vohwinkel syndrome who showed constriction bands causing ischemic changes of the 5th digit of the right hand for which she was treated with surgery. We also presen…

Parallelization of adaptive MC integrators

1997

Monte Carlo (MC) methods for numerical integration seem to be embarassingly parallel on first sight. When adaptive schemes are applied in order to enhance convergence however, the seemingly most natural way of replicating the whole job on each processor can potentially ruin the adaptive behaviour. Using the popular VEGAS-Algorithm as an example an economic method of semi-micro parallelization with variable grain-size is presented and contrasted with another straightforward approach of macro-parallelization. A portable implementation of this semi-micro parallelization is used in the xloops-project and is made publicly available.

Macro-elements in the mixed boundary value problems

2000

The symmetric Galerkin boundary element method (SGBEM), applied to elastostatic problems, is employed in defining a model with BE macro-elements. The model is governed by symmetric operators and it is characterized by a small number of independent variables upon the interface between the macro-elements.

Modern small wind turbine design solutions comparison in terms of estimated cost to energy output ratio

2015

This paper presents a series of estimations performed in order to establish the actual cost-effectiveness of three different small wind turbines (SWTs) design solutions. Each of them was evaluated and based on their power curves and installation costs, using wind data from a numerical weather prediction (WNP) model, a return on investment (ROI) period was calculated. The chosen turbines are: a standard three bladed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT), an advanced diffuser augmented HAWT and a Darrieus type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). The conclusions drawn from this study entertain the idea that from the economical point of view, a price reduction of SWT systems is more important than…

Numerical Analysis of Word Frequencies in Artificial and Natural Language Texts

1997

We perform a numerical study of the statistical properties of natural texts written in English and of two types of artificial texts. As statistical tools we use the conventional Zipf analysis of the distribution of words and the inverse Zipf analysis of the distribution of frequencies of words, the analysis of vocabulary growth, the Shannon entropy and a quantity which is a nonlinear function of frequencies of words, the frequency "entropy". Our numerical results, obtained by investigation of eight complete books and sixteen related artificial texts, suggest that, among these analyses, the analysis of vocabulary growth shows the most striking difference between natural and artificial texts…

An adaptive method for Volterra–Fredholm integral equations on the half line

2009

AbstractIn this paper we develop a direct quadrature method for solving Volterra–Fredholm integral equations on an unbounded spatial domain. These problems, when related to some important physical and biological phenomena, are characterized by kernels that present variable peaks along space. The method we propose is adaptive in the sense that the number of spatial nodes of the quadrature formula varies with the position of the peaks. The convergence of the method is studied and its performances are illustrated by means of a few significative examples. The parallel algorithm which implements the method and its performances are described.
