The effects of convolution and gradient dependence on a parametric Dirichlet problem

Our objective is to study a new type of Dirichlet boundary value problem consisting of a system of equations with parameters, where the reaction terms depend on both the solution and its gradient (i.e., they are convection terms) and incorporate the effects of convolutions. We present results on existence, uniqueness and dependence of solutions with respect to the parameters involving convolutions.

Existence and comparison results for a singular semilinear elliptic equation with a lower order term

This paper deals with the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for a singular semilinear elliptic equation with a first order term. When the datum is bounded we prove an existence result and we show that any solution can be compared with the solution to a suitable symmetrized problem.

On ergodic operator means in Banach spaces

We consider a large class of operator means and prove that a number of ergodic theorems, as well as growth estimates known for particular cases, continue to hold in the general context under fairly mild regularity conditions. The methods developed in the paper not only yield a new approach based on a general point of view, but also lead to results that are new, even in the context of the classical Cesaro means.

Infinite games and chain conditions

We apply the theory of infinite two-person games to two well-known problems in topology: Suslin's Problem and Arhangel'skii's problem on $G_\delta$ covers of compact spaces. More specifically, we prove results of which the following two are special cases: 1) every linearly ordered topological space satisfying the game-theoretic version of the countable chain condition is separable and 2) in every compact space satisfying the game-theoretic version of the weak Lindel\"of property, every cover by $G_\delta$ sets has a continuum-sized subcollection whose union is $G_\delta$-dense.

Efficient computation of the branching structure of an algebraic curve

An efficient algorithm for computing the branching structure of a compact Riemann surface defined via an algebraic curve is presented. Generators of the fundamental group of the base of the ramified covering punctured at the discriminant points of the curve are constructed via a minimal spanning tree of the discriminant points. This leads to paths of minimal length between the points, which is important for a later stage where these paths are used as integration contours to compute periods of the surface. New spaces of matrices with operator entries

In this paper, we will consider matrices with entries in the space of operators $\mathcal{B}(H)$, where $H$ is a separable Hilbert space and consider the class of matrices that can be approached in the operator norm by matrices with a finite number of diagonals. We will use the Schur product with Toeplitz matrices generated by summability kernels to describe such a class and show that in the case of Toeplitz matrices it can be identified with the space of continuous functions with values in $\mathcal B(H)$. For the numerical evaluation of $$\int\limits_a^b {(t - a)^{\alpha - 1} x(t)dt}$$ , 0<?<1 andx `smooth', product integration rules are applied. It is known that high-order rules, e.g. Gauss-Legendre quadrature, become `normal'-order rules in this case. In this paper it is shown that the high order is preserved by a nonequidistant spacing. Furthermore, the leading error terms of this product integration method and numerical examples are given.

Cluster sets and quasiconformal mappings

Certain classical results on cluster sets and boundary cluster sets of analytic functions, due to Iversen, Lindelof, Noshiro, Tsuji, Ohtsuka, Pommerenke, Carmona, Cufi and others, are extended to n-dimensional quasiconformal mappings. Unlike what is usually the case in the context of analytic functions, our considerations are not restricted to mappings of a disk or ball only. It is shown, for instance, that quasiconformal cluster sets and boundary cluster sets, taken at a non-isolated boundary point of an arbitrary domain, coincide. Weighted Extrapolation Techniques for Finite Difference Methods on Complex Domains with Cartesian Meshes

The design of numerical boundary conditions in high order schemes is a challenging problem that has been tackled in different ways depending on the nature of the problem and the scheme used to solve it numerically. In this paper we propose a technique to extrapolate the information from the computational domain to ghost cells for schemes with structured Cartesian Meshes on complex domains. This technique is based on the application of Lagrange interpolation with weighted filters for the detection of discontinuities that permits a data dependent extrapolation, with high order at smooth regions and essentially non oscillatory properties near discontinuities.
