Applying Student Development Theories: Enhancing International Student Academic Success and Integration

2019

Student development theories (SDT) focus on the growth and change occurring in students while attending higher education. In this article, we propose that the application of student development theories supports holistic development in international students and helps us understand international students’ academic success and integration. We outline a combination of student development models, derived from SDT, and interact them with concepts from international student mobility and migration (ISM). These models, when applied to student services, may assist higher education institutions (HEIs) in designing student services for international students enhancing academic success and integration.

Identity construction in ELF contexts: a case study of Finnish engineering students working in Germany

2010

This paper explores connections between identity and language use in lingua franca contexts by investigating identity construction among Finnish users of English as revealed in interviews conducted both before and after a period spent in Germany. The focus is on the users' own stories of their language use and learning, and on the discursive construction of identities. The study draws on poststructuralist theories of identity construction, combining them with research that focuses on language learners' identity construction or on identity issues in contexts with English as a lingua franca. This paper illustrates how language users actively draw on different discourses in constructing their …

Role of post mortem computed tomography in diagnosis of upper cervical fractures in child due to road accident: A case report and literature review

2019

The upper cervical spine has unique anatomical features that distinguish it from the remainder of the cervical spine. Its motion segments make up a large amount of total cervical spine motion and, as a result, predispose it to a unique set of injuries. Cervical spine trauma is a common problem with a wide range of severity from minor ligamentous injury to section of the spinal cord. The use of post mortem CT (PMCT), and the subsequent multi-planar and volume rendering reconstruction techniques can provide non-invasive, objective operator-independent imaging data set that may be further reviewed by other specialists. and can substantially add to forensic examinations of the skeleton, especial…

An Updated Guideline for Assessing Discriminant Validity

2022

Discriminant validity was originally presented as a set of empirical criteria that can be assessed from multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrices. Because datasets used by applied researchers rarely lend themselves to MTMM analysis, the need to assess discriminant validity in empirical research has led to the introduction of numerous techniques, some of which have been introduced in an ad hoc manner and without rigorous methodological support. We review various definitions of and techniques for assessing discriminant validity and provide a generalized definition of discriminant validity based on the correlation between two measures after measurement error has been considered. We then review te…

Incidentality on a continuum: A comparative conceptualization of incidental news consumption

2020

This article seeks to contribute to theorizing the dynamics of incidental news consumption. Through an analysis of 200 semi-structured interviews with people in Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the United States, we show that intentionality in news consumption can be viewed on a continuum, which goes from deliberately setting apart time to access the news on specific outlets to skimming through unsought-for news on social and broadcast media, with intermediate practices such as respondents setting up an environment where they are more or less likely to encounter news. Drawing on structuration theory, this article conceptualizes incidental news in the context of the wider media environ…

Evaluation of Student Teachers’ Perceived Quantitative Workload and Usefulness of an On-line Elementary Science Education Course Unit

2022

We have designed a 1 ECTS on-line science pedagogy unit as a part of a 6 ECTS science education course for elementary school student teachers. To improve the unit, we asked 169 participants to estimate their use of time and the usefulness of the themes and contents in it. We analysed the responses in the framework of students’ perceived workload. The Basics of School Science was perceived as the most useful section, followed by Science Teaching and Learning Methods and Basics of Science and Scientific Knowledge in Schools, respectively. This in mind, we discuss the rescaling of the workload and the respective weights student perception and teacher expertise should have in the process. peerR…

Study of the interactions between Broad bean wilt virus 1 and its host plants

Broad bean wilt virus 1 (BBWV-1) is the type member of the Fabavirus genus, in the Secoviridae family. BBWV-1 is worldwide distributed and infects important horticultural and ornamental crops causing considerable economic losses. However, information about the biological and molecular characteristics of BBWV-1 isolates is scarce. BBWV-1 is composed of two molecules of positive single-stranded RNA (ssRNA+) that are separately encapsidated in virions of icosahedral morphology. Each ssRNA+ encodes polyproteins which are processed by proteolytic cleavage into functional peptides. RNA1 (~ 5.8 kb) encodes for one polyprotein that renders proteins involved in viral replication: a protease cofactor…

Ortho -Functionalized Aryltetrazines by Direct Palladium-Catalyzed C−H Halogenation: Application to Fast Electrophilic Fluorination Reactions

2016

International audience; A general catalyzed direct C-H functionalization of s-tetrazines is reported. Under mild reaction conditions, N-directed ortho-C-H activation of tetrazines allows the introduction of various functional groups, thus forming carbon-heteroatom bonds: C-X (X=I, Br, Cl) and C-O. Based on this methodology, we developed electrophilic mono- and poly-ortho-fluorination of tetrazines. Microwave irradiation was optimized to afford fluorinated s-aryltetrazines, with satisfactory selectivity, within only ten minutes. This work provides an efficient and practical entry for further accessing highly substituted tetrazine derivatives (iodo, bromo, chloro, fluoro, and acetate precurso…

Structural Equation Modeling in Research on Brand Capital in Higher Education

2016

This  research  is  done  in  order  to  examine  the  role  of  the  brand  capital  in higher education. For this purpose, we analyze the main contributions of the literature  related  to  the  study  of  the  brand capital and  its  application  in  the educational  sector,  identifying  which  variables  determine  the  brand  capital in  the  higher  education  sector.  Once  we  establish  the  susceptible  brand capital in the higher education sector, an empirical research is done by using a questionnaire developed in Spanish language with a Likert scale of grade 5 in  which  1  point  means  "strongly  disagree"  and  5  mean  "strongly  agree", being based on the measurement scales…

Older Physical Education Teachers’ Wellbeing at Work and Its Challenges

2022

This article examines older physical education (PE) teachers’ wellbeing over the course of their career in Finland. The study highlights challenges to physical and mental functioning as well as how teachers respond to these challenges. The six interviewees were over 55-year-old PE teachers, whose career had lasted for more than 30 years. Qualitative methods were used in the collection, transcription and analysis of the research data. The qualitative analysis consisted of a series of interpretations that visualised the world described by the interviewees. All the research participants had physical problems that affected their teaching and make teachers consider a potential career c…
