Experimental and human population studies of DNA lesions in healthy individuals

DNA damage is a valuable biomarker in human molecular epidemiology being associated with many diseases. However, the level of DNA damage is influenced also by intrinsic features of healthy individuals: heredity, sex, age and body type. This review summarizes data on DNA breakage level in healthy humans depending on their characteristics and compares these data with experimental studies and observations on animals. Betaine and Choline Improve Lipid Homeostasis in Obesity by Participation in Mitochondrial Oxidative Demethylation

We investigated the metabolic effects of betaine (Bet) supplementation on CTP:phosphoethanolamine cytidylyltransferase/Pcyt2 heterozygous mice (HET). HET received either no treatment or were allowed access to 1% Bet supplemented water for 8 weeks. As we previously showed with choline (Cho), Bet improved hypertriglyceridemia, and hepatic steatosis in HET. Characterization of Differentially Expressed Circulating miRNAs in Metabolically Healthy versus Unhealthy Obesity

Obese individuals without metabolic comorbidities are categorized as metabolically healthy obese (MHO). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) may be implicated in MHO. This cross-sectional study explores the link between circulating miRNAs and the main components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the context of obesity. We also examine oxidative stress biomarkers in MHO vs. metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). We analysed 3536 serum miRNAs in 20 middle-aged obese individuals: 10 MHO and 10 MUO.
