International prescribing practices in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
2016
Objectives To assess rates of psychotropic medication use in patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) in seven different countries on five continents and to compare these with international treatment guidelines. Methods Researchers in the field of OCD were invited to contribute summary statistics on the characteristics of their patients with OCD and on their incidence of psychotropic use. Consistency of summary statistics across countries was evaluated. Results The data came from Brazil (n = 955), Italy (n = 750), South Africa (n = 555), Japan (n = 382), Australia (n = 213), India (n = 202) and Spain (n = 82). The majority (77.9%; n = 2445) of the total sample of 3139 participants …
Psychometric assessment using classic neuropsychological and virtual reality based test: A study in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophr…
2014
Assessment of neurocognitive functioning is a critical task in clinical settings. In many disorders, cognitive impairment precedes the onset of behavioral symptoms, and cognitive decline is a major factor contributing to functional disability. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the executive functions by comparing the evaluations obtained using a neuropsychological battery with the one obtained using the virtual reality version of the Multiple Errands Test (V-MET). The study population included three groups: 10 patients affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD); 10 Schizophrenic patients; 10 healthy Controls. The results identified executive problems in clinical samples.…
Do children experience obsessional intrusive thoughts?
2021
Introduction. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling condition that often begins in childhood. Cognitive behavioural therapy for paediatric OCD is effective and often considered the treatment of choice. While cognitive models of OCD have improved our understanding and interventions in adult populations, it has scarcely been investigated in children. Those models assume that obsessions are extreme variants of unwanted obsessional intrusive thoughts (OITs), which are almost universally experienced in the general populations. This assumption has received empirical support in adult samples but there are almost no studies analysing the presence of OITs in preadolescents. Method. 49 c…
How do children interpret and manage their disturbing obsessive intrusive thoughts?
2021
Introduction. Cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder rest on three main assumptions: a) obsessive intrusive thoughts (OITs) are almost universal; b) negative appraisals of OITs lead to emotional distress and interference; and c) unhelpful control strategies contribute to the escalation of OITs into clinical obsessions. These assumptions have received ample empirical support from research with adult samples, while studies in children are promising but scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the emotional distress, interference, negative appraisals and control efforts of those children that report having experienced recent and frequent OITs. Method. 49 children (28 girls, mea…
Worldwide trends in blood pressure from 1975 to 2015: a pooled analysis of 1479 population-based measurement studies with 19.1 million participants
2017
Background Raised blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease. We estimated worldwide trends in mean systolic and mean diastolic blood pressure, and the prevalence of, and number of people with, raised blood pressure, defined as systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or higher or diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher. Methods For this analysis, we pooled national, subnational, or community population-based studies that had measured blood pressure in adults aged 18 years and older. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends from 1975 to 2015 in mean systolic and mean diastolic blood pressure, and the prevalence of rai…
"Ja vielä kerran alusta" : musiikkikasvattajan mahdollisuudet OCD- ja ASD-oppilaiden tukemisessa
2017
Musiikkikasvattaja saattaa työssään kohdata monenlaisia oppijoita, sillä musiikissa ei yleensä järjestetä minkäänlaista erityisopetusta. Useimmiten erityisoppilailla on kuitenkin hyvät mahdollisuudet osallistua musiikinopetukseen olettaen, että musiikinopettajalla on riittävän hyvät työkalut voidakseen tukea näitä erityisoppilaita ammattimaisesti ja tarkoituksenmukaisesti. Erilaisiin diagnooseihin perehtyminen ja omien pedagogisten tietotaitojen päivittäminen ovat ensisijaisia tapoja auttaa erilaisia oppijoita selviämään koulumaailman haasteista ja saamaan hyviä kokemuksia musiikintunneilta. OCD:ssä (pakko-oireisessa häiriössä) ja ASD:ssä (autismin kirjossa) on paljon samanlaisia piirteitä.…
Contributions of mean and shape of blood pressure distribution to worldwide trends and variations in raised blood pressure: A pooled analysis of 1018…
2018
Background: Change in the prevalence of raised blood pressure could be due to both shifts in the entire distribution of blood pressure (representing the combined effects of public health interventions and secular trends) and changes in its high-blood-pressure tail (representing successful clinical interventions to control blood pressure in the hypertensive population). Our aim was to quantify the contributions of these two phenomena to the worldwide trends in the prevalence of raised blood pressure. Methods: We pooled 1018 population-based studies with blood pressure measurements on 88.6 million participants from 1985 to 2016. We first calculated mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean dia…
Comparative histological and immunohistochemical study of ameloblastomas and ameloblastic carcinomas
2017
Background This study aimed to compare the histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of ameloblastomas (AM) and ameloblastic carcinomas (AC). Material and Methods Fifteen cases of AM and 9 AC were submitted to hematoxilin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical analysis with the following antibodies: cytokeratins 5,7,8,14 and 19, Ki-67, p53, p63 and the cellular adhesion molecules CD138 (Syndecan-1), E-cadherin and β-catenin. The mean score of the expression of Ki-67 and p53 labelling index (LIs) were compared between the groups using the t test. A value of p<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results All cases were positive for CKs 5, 14 and 19, but negative fo…
« Product Market Regulations Impact on the Labor Market »
2020
