Urmylation and tRNA thiolation functions of ubiquitin-like Uba4·Urm1 systems are conserved from yeast to man

AbstractThe ubiquitin-like protein Urm1 from budding yeast and its E1-like activator Uba4 have dual roles in protein urmylation and tRNA thiolation pathways. To study whether these are conserved among eukaryotes, we used gene shuffles to replace the yeast proteins by their human counterparts, hURM1 and hUBA4/MOCS3. As judged from biochemical and genetical assays, hURM1 and hUBA4 are functional in yeast, albeit at reduced efficiencies. They mediate urmylation of the peroxiredoxin Ahp1, a known urmylation target in yeast, and support tRNA thiolation. The chemical ecology of Heteroptera insects is determined by a wide array of chemical signals (semiochemicals) that drive their behavior at intra- and inter-specific level. Intraspecific semiochemicals are called pheromones, interspecific chemicals are named allelochemicals. In the case of stink bugs, sex-pheromones and aggregation pheromone are produced by adult males. Furthermore, phytophagous stink bugs exploit chemical cues emitted from plants to find a suitable food and oviposition source. In this study the responses of females of the egg parasitoid Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) to volatile and contact chemicals from its host Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) and from host plant Solanum lycopersicum L. were investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer and in open arena. This work presents the results of an assessment of the existence and concentration of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwaters from 14 hydrological basins in Sicily (25,710 km2). On the basis of hydrological, hydrogeochemical and geological studies, 324 sampling points were selected. All groundwater sampled were collected twice, from October to December 2004 and from February to May 2005, and were analysed to determine the concentration and spatial distribution of the VOCs in the aquifers. En este trabajo se presenta la tesis de que los Juegos Olímpicos modernos pueden interpretarse, trascendiendo su dimensión estrictamente deportiva, como un Nuevo Objeto-Mundo Social. Desde esta perspectiva teórica se establecen dos hipótesis de investigación. La primera tiene que ver con la fundamentación empírica de su carácter de objeto-mundo social. L'ús del foc com a element per a martiritzar santes i sants cristians va ser molt estés, tal com ho testimonia la literatura hagiogràfica de l'antiguitat tardana i d'època bizantina. Els autors relaten casos miraculosos en què els màrtirs no es veuen afectats per les flames gràcies a la intervenció divina. Es tracta d'un motiu literari i folklòric que arranca de l'Antic Testament (llibre de Daniel), apareix a la novel·la grega antiga i passa al'hagiografia, influenciada pel gènere novel·lístic. L'efecte d'aquest prodigi pretén que el missatge religiós assolisca més força en els fidels i que augmente el poder de la fe cristiana.
