The texture of food for infants and young children
2014
The weaning period is a transition from milk to family foods and is a critical phase for the development of food acceptance and eating habits of children. The texture of the complementary food introduced plays an important role in shaping preferences. It is known that early introduction of solid food and experience in difficult-to-chew textures could enhance later food acceptance. Texture acceptance follows the developmental sequence of oral functions and infants are more likely to accept texture they can manipulate in mouth. The development of these functions (mainly chewing) is thought to depend on the texture infants are exposed to. Infant refusing foods that require significant chewing …

Impact of viable CD45 cells infused on lymphocyte subset recovery after unrelated cord blood transplantation in children
2010
International audience; We studied lymphocyte recovery in 88 children who consecutively underwent unrelated cord blood transplantation for malignant (n = 64) or nonmalignant (n = 24) diseases. All children but 3 received myeloablative conditioning regimens with pretransplant antithymocyte globulin. Median age was 5.6 years (0.1-18 years) and median follow-up was 40 months (10-136 months). The median dose of infused viable CD45(+) cells (vCD45) was 3.35 × 10(7)/kg with a ratio infused vCD45/collected total nucleated cell at 0.46. Immunologic endpoints were: time to achieve CD3(+) >500 and 1500/mm(3), CD4(+) >500/mm(3), CD8(+) >250/mm(3), CD19(+) >200/mm(3), natural killer >100/mm(3). These e…
Dietary variety in infants by the end of the 1st year: insights from a new questionnaire
2019
There are data on the nutritional composition of foods dedicated to infants but descriptions of the infant's diet in terms of energy density (ED) are sparse. Besides, around the age of 1 year, the infant's diet shifts from foods specifically dedicated to infants to a diet composed of adult foods making this time period of interest. Our objective was to describe the ED of the consumed vegetable, the infants' exposure to dietary ED variability for vegetable-based recipes and whether this was linked to individual characteristics like sex, z-BMI or duration of breastfeeding and the age at the onset of complementary feeding. When their infant was 11 months old, parents completed a 3-month retros…
Role of the non-infective stage of the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhychus laevis on the behavioural manipulation of its amphipod intermediate host
2012
In trophically-transmitted parasites, exploitation strategies of the intermediate host have been selected, in a way increasing parasites transmission probabilities to their definitive host. Particularly, numerous parasites are able to alter their intermediate host behaviour, a phenomenon called ‘behavioural manipulation’. This manipulation only occurs when the parasite developmental stage (or larval stage) is infective for the definitive host. Before reaching this stage, the development of parasite larvae is not sufficiently advanced to allow establishment in the definitive host (this stage is thus called ‘non-infective’). Early transmission of a non-infective stage therefore implies parasi…
Développement de méthodes de référence pour les biomarqueurs du bilan lipidique : application au contrôle qualité en biologie clinique
2013
Reliable measurements in medical biology are essential for early screening and appropriate follow-up of patients. Ensuring metrological traceability of clinical measurements to higher order reference methods or certified reference materials enables to obtain comparable results over time and between different laboratories that could use different methods to quantify the same biomarker. In this study, reference methods were developed and validated for lipid profile biomarkers (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, and LDL-C). Their value added in proficiency testing schemes was demonstrated against consensus mean. They were also used to characterize a certified reference material (CRM) that…
Measuring vine leaf roughness by image processing
2013
International audience; In precision spraying, spray application efficiency depends on the pesticide application method, the phytosanitary product as well as the leaf surface properties. For environmental and economic reasons, the global trend is to reduce the pesticide application rate of the few approved active substances. Under these constraints, one of the challenges is to improve the efficiency of pesticide application. Different parameters can influence on pesticide application as nozzle types, liquid viscosity and leaf surface. Specific models have been developed showing that the predominant factor for the leaf is the leaf roughness, because it is related on adhesion mechanisms of li…
