The paper analyzes the achievable strategic role that the porto of Porto Empedocle (sinergy by Agrigento, its "city mother") could have. This marginal city, localized in the center of the African side of the Sicily, is far from European politics, but this situation could change. It's necessary to improve the sea routes and to activate the disused railway line from Porto Empedocle to Castelvetrano (near Trapani). This solution will help the accessibility of Agrigento and the development of the little coastal towns organized in a slow and sustainable network. The pholcid spider Spermophora senoculata (Duges, 1836) is recorded for the first time on the Mediterranean Island of Sicily (Italy) from indoor heated and non-heated habitats of two cities. This species is associated with mostly anthropogenic habitats around the globe. Uncertainty remains about where its native distribution range is located.
Experimental techniques for testing the sensitivity of bladder tumours to antineoplastic drugs

A number of laboratory tests can be employed to examine the sensitivity of human bladder tumour cells to various chemotherapeutic agents.-Their principles and methods, and some preliminary results, are described with special reference to certain in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity tests and to heterotransplantation in the hamster. Satisfactory agreement has sometimes been observed between experimental results and clinical responses, but our experience is still very limited.-The employment of several such tests would probably lead to a greater degree of reliability in the laboratory assessment of the sensitivity of bladder tumours to cytotoxic drugs.

A geophysical and geochemical approach for seawater intrusion assessment in the Acquedolci coastal aquifer (Northern Sicily)

Vertical electrical sounding (VES’) surveys and chemical analyses of groundwater have been executed in the coastal plain of Acquedolci (Northern Sicily), with the aim to circumscribe seawater intrusion phenomena. This urbanized area is representative of a more general problem interesting most of Mediterranean littoral areas, where intensive overdraft favors a heavy seawater intrusion through the coastline. Aquifer resistivity seems decisively to be conditioned by the chlorine and magnesium content in the main aquifer of the region.
