Mediterranean diet and heart rate: the PREDIMED randomised trial

A higher heart rate (HR) has been associated with increased total and cardiovascular mortality [1] and [2]. Clinical trials support the beneficial effect of decreasing HR in patients with heart failure [3] and ischaemic heart disease [4]. A recent cross-sectional study showed that closer adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) was related to lower HR [5]. We evaluated the association between adherence to the MeDiet (measured with a score from 0 to 14 obtained by a validated screener [6]) and HR using both a cross-sectional and a longitudinal analysis of the PREDIMED trial [7] and [8].

The first results of the PREDIMED (PREvencion con Dieta MEDiterranea) randomized trial, after 3-month intervention, showed that the Mediterranean Diet (MD), supplemented with either virgin olive oil (VOO) or nuts, reduced systolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol and triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations and increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol when compared to a control (low-fat diet) group. Development of Methods for the Determination of Ts, T3s and Sterols in Vegetable Oils

In this work, a CEC method using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns was developed to determine Ts and T3s present in edible oils. The potential of this method to evaluate olive oil adulteration with lower-cost oils of a different botanical origin was also investigated. For these purposes, the following vegetable oils were used: soybean, sunflower, grapeseed, EVOO (Coosur), hazelnut (Guinama), corn (Hacendado) and red palm (Blue Bay).

The success of the traditional olive-growing sector in EU countries – characterised by high production costs and a low selling price for the oil – was mainly determined by EU subsidies available for the sector. Effect of storage on quality parameters and phenolic content of Italian extra-virgin olive oils

The quality of extra virgin olive oils is affected mainly by hydrolytic and oxidative reactions. The present paper investigated the changes of major and minor components and oxidation indices of three monovarietal extra virgin olive oils after 18 months of storage at room temperature and in dark glass bottles conditions. After storage, the basic quality parameters such as free acidity, peroxide values, extinction coefficients, fatty acids composition, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, did not exceed the upper limits set by European Community Regulations for extra-virgin olive oils.
