Microalgae cultivation in wastewater: nutrient removal from anaerobic membrane bioreactor effluent

2012

This study investigated the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the effluent of a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) by means of a lab-scale photobioreactor in which algae biomass was cultured in a semi-continuous mode for a period of 42 days. Solids retention time was 2 days and a stable pH value in the system was maintained by adding CO2. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the SAnMBR effluent fluctuated according to the operating performance of the bioreactor and the properties of its actual wastewater load. Despite these variations, the anaerobic effluent proved to be a suitable growth medium for microalgae (mean biomass productivity was 234 mgl(-1) d(-1)), achie…

Effects of elevated production of autochthonous dissolved organic matter on the freely dissolved concentration of cadmium

2018

Eutrophication enhances the production of autochthonous dissolved organic matter (DOM), which is a major driving factor behind the impairment of many aquatic ecosystems. In a mesocosm study, we investigated the effects of the abundance and composition of DOM on the potential bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) caused by eutrophication, using three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy integrated with tangential flow ultrafiltration technology. The complexing capacity of DOM-Cd and the sorption distribution coefficient between DOM and the bulk solution was calculated based on a 1 : 1 complexation model. The fluorescent DOM was decomposed into three components (one prot…

Justification of Construction Parameters of the Screen in the Small-Sized Household Biomass Chopper

2019

The mechanism of influence of screen design parameters on the technological process and the particle size distribution of the chopped biomass were determined in this research. The presented engineering solutions make it possible to design the screen for chopping the given biomass material. The modernized construction expands the scope of application of small-sized chopper, especially when used in private farm households. Size control of the chopped material allows to use material as fuel, material for mulching of berry plantations and gardens, material for production of constructional and insulating wood concrete.

Suomalaisen perheen yhteisen sukunimen lyhyt historia

2016

Viimeistään 1900-luvulta lähtien on ajateltu, että yhteinen sukunimi symboloi suomalaista perhettä julkisissa yhteyksissä ja muodostaa perheenjäsenten yhteisen identiteetin perustekijän. Suomen lainsäädännön mukaan naiset olivat kuitenkin velvollisia ottamaan aviomiehensä sukunimen vain lyhyen aikaa, 1930-luvulta 1980-luvulle ulottuvalla ajanjaksolla. Pohdin artikkelissani, miksi 1800-luvun lopun ja 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmenten ajatusmaailma vaikutti hyvin pitkään suomalaisten sukunimistöön. peerReviewed

Levan-ethanol biosynthesis using Zymomonas mobilis cells immobilized by attachment and entrapment

2001

Fermentation of sucrose by Zymomonas mobilis cells attached to stainless steel wire spheres (WS) and to Al2O3 granules was compared with sucrose fermentation by cells entrapped in Ca-alginate. Similar amounts of cell biomass were applied at the beginning of the immobilized fermentation systems. The immobilization of Z. mobilis cells to the carrier surface was checked by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Most cells were present in holes and pores of Al2O3 surfaces following colonization. Observation of the carrier after repeated fermentation cycles showed that a surface of Al2O3 granules was partly covered by levan. Alginate beads were extended in volume and partly disrupted. Changing the …

Kinetics of phenol removal by Nocardia species

1979

Phenol removal by pure cultures of Nocardia corallina was studied in a batch reacting system by estimating both the active biomass and the phenol concentration in the liquid during the experiments. A simple kinetic model was tested and the relative constants determined at 37°C.

Cultivation of granular sludge with hypersaline oily wastewater

2015

The time required to stabilise mature aerobic granules is rather variable. In addition, cultivation time and the structural characteristics of granules seem to be related to the nature of wastewater influent. Granular sludge has been used for the treatment of several industrial wastewaters, but nothing has been reported about wastewater characterized by the simultaneous presence of hydrocarbons and high chloride concentration. In this work, the authors analysed the granulation process and performance as well as the physical characteristics of aerobic granules in two Granular Sequencing Batch Airlift Reactors (GSBARs), fed with acetate-based synthetic wastewater in reactor 1 (R1) and with a …

Stability of levan produced by Zymomonas mobilis

2005

Abstract The stability of levan produced by Zymomonas mobilis 113 “S” was investigated during storage of culture liquid at different pH and temperatures. Levan was not degraded if stored in a culture liquid for 120 h at 30 or 25 °C, but at 55 or 60 °C the degree of degradation was inversely proportional to pH. Cell biomass and levan sediment components did not cause the degradation of levan. The influence of organic acids (lactic-, acetic-, and gluconic) and HCl as levan hydrolyzing agents at pH 3.7, temperature 30 °C or 55 °C was investigated in a model solution. The hydrolytic effect was similar in the case of organic acids—ensuring more fructose formation, while HCl ensured higher amount…

Cilvēka problemātiskā eksistence un psihiatrijas prakse: idejas, izvērsumi un kritika Ronalda Leinga un Tomasa Sāsa darbos

2015

Wastewaters from citrus processing industry as natural biostimulants for soil microbial community

2020

Abstract Citrus fruit processing wastewaters (CWWs), being rich in organic matter, may be a valuable resource for agricultural irrigation and, possibly, for the improvement of soil organic carbon (TOC). This issue is becoming crucial for soils of arid and semiarid environments increasingly experiencing water scarcity and continuous decline of TOC towards levels insufficient to sustain crop production. However, before using CWWs in agriculture their effects on the soil living component have to be clarified. Therefore, in this study we assessed the impact of CWWs on soil chemical and biochemical properties. Under laboratory conditions, lemon, orange and tangerine wastewaters were separately a…
