Single chain structure in thin polymer films: Corrections to Flory's and Silberberg's hypotheses

2005

Conformational properties of polymer melts confined between two hard structureless walls are investigated by Monte Carlo simulation of the bond-fluctuation model. Parallel and perpendicular components of chain extension, bond-bond correlation function and structure factor are computed and compared with recent theoretical approaches attempting to go beyond Flory's and Silberberg's hypotheses. We demonstrate that for ultrathin films where the thickness, $H$, is smaller than the excluded volume screening length (blob size), $\xi$, the chain size parallel to the walls diverges logarithmically, $R^2/2N \approx b^2 + c \log(N)$ with $c \sim 1/H$. The corresponding bond-bond correlation function d…

Interactions between dietary n-3 fatty acids and genetic variants and risk of disease

2012

Nutritional genomics has undergone rapid development and the concept is now very popular with the general public. Therefore, there is increasing demand for knowledge on adapting dietary composition to the genome. Our aim has been to undertake a systematic review so as to find out the level of evidence existing on whether the effects of n-3 fatty acids on health can be modulated by genetic variation. A systematic literature search was conducted on studies that jointly analyse the effect of one or more genetic variants in candidate genes and n-3 fatty acids. Both observational and experimental studies were included. Results are classified in accordance with whether the study was undertaken on…

Effect of ethanol on polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis in hepatocytes from spontaneously hypertensive rats.

2001

Background: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a major role in membrane structures that are modified during alcoholism. PUFA are also precursors of second messengers—eicosanoids—involved in the regulation of blood pressure. Alcohol has been related to hypertension and to alterations in liver PUFA metabolism. We investigated the effects of ethanol on PUFA biogenesis in hepatocytes of Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR). The effects of a diet enriched with n-3 PUFA, which is known to modulate hypertension, were also studied. Methods: Isolated hepatocytes from male normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and SHR were incubated for 60 min in the presence of label…

A question from the Kourovka Notebook on formation products

2003

[EN] It is shown in this paper that if X is a class of simple groups such that pi(X) = char X, the X-saturated formation H generated by a finite group cannot be expressed as the Gaschütz product F o G of two non-X-saturated formations if H = G. It answers some open questions on products of formations. The relation between omega-saturated and X-saturated formations is also discussed.

Griscelli-Syndrom: ein Fallbericht

2003

Background: Griscelli syndrome is a rare disorder with poor prognosis. It is characterized by silver-grey hair or strands of silver-grey hair in childhood, and variable cellular immunodeficiency. The course of the untreated disease is fatal. Recurrent episodes of fever and lymphohistocytic infiltration of organs lead to hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, pancytopenia, and progressive neurological impairment. Prognosis on morbidity and lethality depends on an early diagnosis. Patient: The girl we report on suffers from Griscelli syndrome. She developed normally and only her grey strands of hair, grey eyebrows, and eyelids were conspicuous. With the age of 4 years she presented with a first…

Kinetics of cytomegalovirus (CMV) pp65 and IE-1-specific IFNgamma CD8+ and CD4+ T cells during episodes of viral DNAemia in allogeneic stem cell tran…

2010

The dynamics of CMV pp65 and IE-1-specific IFNgamma-producing CD8(+) (IFNgamma CD8(+)) and CD4(+) (IFNgamma CD4(+)) T cells and CMV DNAemia were assessed in 19 pre-emptively treated episodes of active CMV infection. Peripheral counts of IFNgamma CD8(+) and IFNgamma CD4(+) T cells inversely correlated with CMV DNAemia levels (P = <0.001 and P = 0.003, respectively). A threshold value of 1.3 cells/microl predicting CMV DNAemia clearance was established for IFNgamma CD8(+) T cells (PPV, 100%; NPV, 93%) and for IFNgamma CD4(+) T cells (PPV, 100%; NPV, 75%). Undetectable T-cell responses were usually observed at the time of initiation of pre-emptive therapy. Either a rapid (within 7 days) or a d…

DI-032 Study of effectiveness and safety of foscarnet in cytomegalovirus treatment in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients

2016

Background Cytomegalovirus disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. Foscarnet, an intravenous drug active against cytomegalovirus, represents an increasingly widespread alternative when there is resistance or intolerance to conventional treatments (ganciclovir/valganciclovir, acyclovir). More data about its use, effectiveness and safety in the clinical practice are necessary. Purpose To analyse the effectiveness and safety of the use of foscarnet against cytomegalovirus in HSCT recipients, and its adaptation to clinical practice guidelines and expert recommendations in order to optimise future treatment strategie…
