The phase diagram of Ti-6Al-4V at high-pressures and high-temperatures.

2020

Abstract We report results from a series of diamond-anvil-cell synchrotron x-ray diffraction and large-volume-press experiments, and calculations, to investigate the phase diagram of commercial polycrystalline high-strength Ti-6Al-4V alloy in pressure–temperature space. Up to ∼30 GPa and 886 K, Ti-6Al-4V is found to be stable in the hexagonal-close-packed, or α phase. The effect of temperature on the volume expansion and compressibility of α–Ti-6Al-4V is modest. The martensitic α → ω (hexagonal) transition occurs at ∼30 GPa, with both phases coexisting until at ∼38–40 GPa the transition to the ω phase is completed. Between 300 K and 844 K the α → ω transition appears to be independent of te…

The ∞-Eigenvalue Problem

1999

. The Euler‐Lagrange equation of the nonlinear Rayleigh quotient \( \left(\int_{\Omega}|\nabla u|^{p}\,dx\right) \bigg/ \left(\int_{\Omega}|u|^{p}\,dx\right)\) is \( -\div\left( |\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u \right)= \Lambda_{p}^{p} |u |^{p-2}u,\) where \(\Lambda_{p}^{p}\) is the minimum value of the quotient. The limit as \(p\to\infty\) of these equations is found to be \(\max \left\{ \Lambda_{\infty}-\frac{|\nabla u(x)|}{u(x)},\ \ \Delta_{\infty}u(x)\right\}=0,\) where the constant \(\Lambda_{\infty}=\lim_{p\to\infty}\Lambda_{p}\) is the reciprocal of the maximum of the distance to the boundary of the domain Ω.

Direct Evidence for Viral Antigen Presentation during Latent Cytomegalovirus Infection

2021

Murine models of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection have revealed an immunological phenomenon known as “memory inflation” (MI). After a peak of a primary CD8+ T-cell response, the pool of epitope-specific cells contracts in parallel to the resolution of productive infection and the establishment of a latent infection, referred to as “latency.” CMV latency is associated with an increase in the number of cells specific for certain viral epitopes over time. The inflationary subset was identified as effector-memory T cells (iTEM) characterized by the cell surface phenotype KLRG1+CD127−CD62L−. As we have shown recently, latent viral genomes are not transcriptionally silent. Rather, viral genes are …

Performance of the QuantiFERON-cytomegalovirus (CMV) assay for detection and estimation of the magnitude and functionality of the CMV-specific gamma …

2012

ABSTRACTThe performance of the QuantiFERON-cytomegalovirus (CMV) assay was compared to that of a flow cytometry intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) method for the detection of CMV-specific gamma interferon (IFN-γ)-producing CD8+T-cell responses in allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) recipients and for estimations of their magnitude and functionality. A total of 90 whole-blood specimens from 23 allo-SCT recipients was analyzed by both methods. Overall, the percentage of specimens that yielded concordant results by both methods was 68.8% (κ = 0.691; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.548 to 0.835), and the sensitivity of the QuantiFERON-CMV assay for the detection of positive IFN-γ T-ce…

Clinical use of polymerase chain reaction performed on peripheral blood and bone marrow samples for the diagnosis and monitoring of visceral leishman…

2007

Background To overcome some of the limitations of conventional microbiologic techniques, polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays are proposed as useful tools for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. Patients and methods A comparative study using conventional microbiologic techniques (i.e., serologic testing, microscopic examination, and culture) and a Leishmania species-specific PCR assay, using peripheral blood and bone marrow aspirate samples as templates, was conducted during an 8-year period. The study cohort consisted of 594 Italian immunocompetent (adult and pediatric) and immunocompromised (adult) patients experiencing febrile syndromes associated with hematologic alteration…

Cytomegalovirus pneumonia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review

2012

Summary Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are at increased risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation, and although CMV pneumonia may be a fatal disease in IBD patients, little information is available on this issue. The objectives of this study were to identify risk factors for the development of CMV pneumonia in IBD patients and to find useful information to better manage this potentially fatal complication. Methods A computerized search without language restrictions was conducted using PubMed and SCOPUS. An article was considered eligible for inclusion in the systematic review if it reported detailed data on patients with IBD presenting with pneumonia due to CMV. Resul…

Cytomegalovirus Infection Management in Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients: a National Survey in Spain.

2015

ABSTRACT This study gathered information about current practices of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection management in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients at Spanish centers. A wide variety of preemptive antiviral therapy strategies for CMV infection guided by real-time PCR assays was found, yet the incidence of CMV disease was low (<3%).

Cytomegalovirus infection in solid organ transplantation.

2012

Cytomegalovirus infection remains a serious threat to solid transplant recipients. Despite advances in this field, there are still difficulties in the diagnosis of the disease and there are questions about the best and most cost-effective strategy to prevent infection and its direct and indirect consequences in the short and long term. All these points are discussed and updated in this chapter.

The assembly of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) virions is an orchestrated process that requires, as an essential prerequisite, the complex crosstalk between viral structural proteins. Currently, however, the mechanisms governing the successive steps in the constitution of virion protein complexes remain elusive. Protein phosphorylation is a key regulator determining the sequential changes in the conformation, binding, dynamics, and stability of proteins in the course of multiprotein assembly. In this review, we present a comprehensive map of the HCMV virion proteome, including a refined view on the virion phosphoproteome, based on previous publications supplemented by new results. Thus, a nov…
