Looking for determinants of willingness-to-pay for Sibelius Hall, Lahti

The aim of this paper is to determine the factors affecting the willingness-to-pay for a local concert hall, namely Sibelius Hall in Lahti. Our study argues that a high income, the use of cultural services and a positive attitude towards culture were connected to a high willingness-to-pay for Sibelius Hall. Our study revealed that “I do not know” answers can be partly explained by the character of cultural preferences being an acquired taste. As a consequence, the users and respondents exhibiting a positive attitude towards culture may choose the “I do not know” option instead of making a zero bid. peerReviewed

An Approach to Delineate Groundwater Bodies at Risk: Seawater Intrusion in Liepāja (Latvia)

Groundwater quality in coastal areas is frequently affected by seawater intrusion as a consequence of intensive water consumption. To achieve “good chemical status” of a groundwater body according to Water Framework Directive the effects of saline or other intrusions should not be observed. Groundwater pumping in former decades has caused a significant seawater intrusion into confined aquifer in Liepāja and has led to deterioration of relatively wide coastal area of the third largest city in Latvia. Evaluation of a Chemistry Concept Inventory for general chemistry students at Finnish university

A chemistry concept inventory (Chemical Concept Inventory 3.0/CCI 3.0), previously developed for use
 in Norwegian universities, was tested and evaluated for use in a Finnish university setting. The test,
 designed to evaluate student knowledge and learning of chemistry concepts, was administered as both
 pre- and posttest in first year general chemistry courses at the University of Jyväskylä. The results were
 evaluated using different statistical tests, focusing both on individual item analysis and the entire test.

El texto de Aníbal Quijada Cerco de púas ejemplifica la doble vinculación de los testimonios del exilio chileno. Por una parte, éstos debieron inscribirse en las estrategias internacionales de denuncia contra la dictadura militar y, por otra, la comunidad cultural latinoamericana hizo de los testimonios un elemento esencial para la redefinición del concepto mismo de lo literario.
