From Dialects to a Language. Cesare Caravaglios and the Melodies in the World War I Trenches as Songs of the Italian Nation

2019

After the territorial unity of Italy in 1861, romanists, ethnographers and musicologists addressed their efforts in collecting poems and folk music, aiming to demonstrate the interconnection among different regions. At the end of the nineteenth century, the impulse to identify the unity of the country through dialects became a dogma, in order to consolidate the unachieved “Italianness”. Alongside to this presumed linguistic similarity, an obsessive mix of nationalism and irredentism provoked the political campaign, which brought to the war in 1915. Cesare Caravaglios (1893-1937), a band conductor and a scholar, devoted his research on Neapolitan songs and cries of street vendors. Influenced…

Nomi (e identità) di luogo nella canzone dialettale siciliana

2017

Authors of neo-dialect songs choose dialect, on the one hand, because they need to find better metrical and rhythmic solutions, and, on the other, they wish to use an ‘alternative’ language to standard Italian. At the same time, their pro loco linguistic choice gives authors the chance to use the dialect as a symbol of microspace opposing the sense of estrangement and alienation caused by globalization. Thus, besides the linguistic «locality» expressed by means of dialect, we find another kind of locality, consisting in the authors’ constant reference to local settings, related to the space they live in, symbolizing the return to their own roots in opposition to the global village. Of cours…

Nomi d’arte e soprannomi di cantautori, rapper e band della scena musicale siciliana

2019

Nowadays the names and bynames of pop-groups and musicians are more and more characterized by multiple, differentiated onomaturgical solutions which allow us to explore and comprehend current linguistic and cultural trends as well as the metalinguistic awareness/competence of authors and «users» of the music industry. On the one hand, as far as the national and international scenario is concerned, many names are based on a sort of game of mirrors: from personal names to place names and street names, from sign names to brand names, a lot of linguistic material «rebounds” on the names of singers and bands. On the other hand, as far as the Sicilian dialect song context is concerned, most names…

L’USO DEL DIALETTO NELLA CANZONE. STUDI, TENDENZE, PROSPETTIVE DI RICERCA

2020

Shortage of Sediments in the Maspalomas Dune Field (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) Deduced from Analysis of Aerial Photographs, Foraminiferal Content,…

2007

Abstract The Maspalomas dune field and adjacent beaches are the most extensive coastal sedimentary environment on the island of Gran Canaria. This area is very important from both a natural and an economic perspective. The analysis of aerial photographs and satellite images from recent decades does not show important shoreline changes for the El Ingles and Maspalomas beaches, which can be considered, consequently, in a state of equilibrium. However, the Maspalomas dune field presents several modifications, such as aeolian corridors associated with beach kiosks, a significant reduction in thickness of the aeolian deposits, and an increase of deflation areas in the underlying substratum. All …

Surface sediment dynamics along the Tunisian coast at Skhira (Gulf of Gabès, south-eastern Tunisia)

2015

Abstract An investigation was conducted in the summer of 2012 at 24 study stations along the Tunisian coast near Skhira (south-eastern Mediterranean Sea) through high resolution of analyses, grain size and mineral composition of surface sediment. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler showed Skhira's main coastal current to follow a direction 60°E, with its main axis south-west/north-east parallel to the coastline and its minor axis east-west. Current speeds were approximately 13 cm s−1 and 4.5 cm s−1 for the major and minor axes, respectively. Parallel to the coast, currents were generally mild to moderate, but often exceeded 20 cm s−1. An Argonaut meter recorded the dominant current directi…

2006

Pats gausiausias ir ryškiausias latvių folkloro žanras – tai keturių eilučių posmai, vadinamieji klasikiniai ketureiliai. Tradicinių ketureilių visuma sudaro atskirą kalbos sistemos porūšį. Pavienių žodžių reikšmės čia išryškėja daugiausia viso ketureilio semantikos kontekste, per tematiniu požiūriu susijusias dainas arba visuose panašias formules turinčiuose tekstuose. Toks kupletas laikytinas pamatiniu latvių liaudies dainų tradicijos vienetu. Jis sudaro ir poetinių paralelizmų pagrindą, o šios konstrukcijos vaidina labai svarbų vaidmenį liaudies dainų poetikoje. Mokslinė dainų tekstų analizė atliekama ne tiktai pasitelkiant formulių teoriją, bet ir remiantis ženklo samprata bei atsižvelg…

DECORIN EFFECTS ON PROTEOMIC PROFILING OF BREAST CANCER CELLS: AN UPDATED STUDY

2015

The malignant carcinomas are characterized by several capabilities acquired by the neoplastic cells, among which the ability to invade the extracellular matrix (ECM) and to establish a crosstalk with several ECM components. Under this respect, the extracellular microenvironment is an entity extraordinarily rich of information with opposite signals. Our group has long undertaken the study of the effects of ECM molecules on the behavior of cancer cells in vitro. Among the studied molecules, the decorin was found to exert a non-permissive effect on the growth and motility of the transfected tumor cells. The decorin, belongs to the family of small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP) and is involv…

The malignant carcinomas are characterized by several capabilities acquired by the neoplastic cells among which the ability to invade the extracellular matrix (ECM) and to establish a crosstalk with several ECM components. Under this respect the extracellular microenvironment is an entity extraordinarily rich of information with opposite signals. Our group has long undertaken the study of the effects of ECM molecules on the behavior of cancer cells in vitro. Among the studied molecules the decorin was found to exert a non-permissive effect on the growth and motility of the transfected tumor cells. The decorin belongs to the family of small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP) and is involved physiologically in the fibrillogenesis of collagen. In the last few year a new anti-oncogenic role has been proposed for decorin1. This study aimed to implement the knowledge on the effects of ectopic decorin on breast cancer cells using as a reference point the results already achieved by our research group2 on the experimental model format. By breast cancer cell line 8701-BC and its transfected clone DEC-C2. The extension of the proteomic analysis combined with the mass spectrometry allowed to triplicate the number of identified proteins in our model. Among the newly identified proteins were members of the classes of metabolic enzymes S100 family and cell motility proteins which revealed a net decrease in the decorin transfected cells. Of considerable importance is the observation that these classes of proteins are the most involved in metastatic progression. These results confirm and reinforce the anti-oncogenic role hypothesized for decorin. The work was co-funded by the Italian 5x1000 to COBS.DECORIN
