Transition to turbulence in toroidal pipes

AbstractIncompressible flow in toroidal pipes of circular cross-section was investigated by three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical simulations using a finite volume method. The computational domain included a whole torus and was discretized by up to ${\ensuremath{\sim} }11. 4\ensuremath{\times} 1{0}^{6} $ nodes. Two curvatures $\delta $ (radius of the cross-section/radius of the torus), namely 0.3 and 0.1, were examined; a streamwise forcing term was imposed, and its magnitude was made to vary so that the bulk Reynolds number ranged between ${\ensuremath{\sim} }3500$ and ${\ensuremath{\sim} }14\hspace{0.167em} 700$. Molecular mechanisms of sorafenib action in liver cancer cells.

Sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor, recently received FDA approval for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, as the clinical application of sorafenib evolves, there is increasing interest in defining the mechanisms underlying its anti-tumor activity. Considering that this specific inhibitor could target unexpected molecules depending on the biologic context, a precise understanding of its mechanism of action could be critical to maximize its treatment efficacy, while minimizing adverse effects. Minimal Morse flows on compact manifolds

Abstract In this paper we prove, using the Poincare–Hopf inequalities, that a minimal number of non-degenerate singularities can be computed in terms only of abstract homological boundary information. Furthermore, this minimal number can be realized on some manifold with non-empty boundary satisfying the abstract homological boundary information. In fact, we present all possible indices and types (connecting or disconnecting) of singularities realizing this minimal number. The Euler characteristics of all manifolds realizing this minimal number are obtained and the associated Lyapunov graphs of Morse type are described and shown to have the lowest topological complexity.

Closedness of Star Products and Cohomologies

We first review the introduction of star products in connection with deformations of Poisson brackets and the various cohomologies that are related to them. Then we concentrate on what we have called “closed star products” and their relations with cyclic cohomology and index theorems. Finally we shall explain how quantum groups, especially in their recent topological form, are in essence examples of star products.

Fractional differential equations solved by using Mellin transform

In this paper, the solution of the multi-order differential equations, by using Mellin Transform, is proposed. It is shown that the problem related to the shift of the real part of the argument of the transformed function, arising when the Mellin integral operates on the fractional derivatives, may be overcame. Then, the solution may be found for any fractional differential equation involving multi-order fractional derivatives (or integrals). The solution is found in the Mellin domain, by solving a linear set of algebraic equations, whose inverse transform gives the solution of the fractional differential equation at hands.

Optimizing droop coefficients for minimum cost operation of islanded micro-grids

This paper shows how minimum cost energy management can be carried out for islanded micro-grids considering an expanded state that also includes the system's frequency. Each of the configurations outputted by the energy management system at each hour are indeed technically sound and coherent from the point of view of generation-consumption balancing by exploiting a frequency dependent load flow algorithm. A Glow-worm Swarm Optimization (GSO) algorithm carried out in a 24 hour time frame provides optimized results. How to Get a Model in Pedestrian Dynamics to Produce Stop and Go Waves

Stop and go waves in granular flow can often be described mathematically by a dynamical system with a Hopf bifurcation. We show that a certain class of microscopic, ordinary differential equation-based models in crowd dynamics fulfil certain conditions of Hopf bifurcations. The class is based on the Gradient Navigation Model. An interesting phenomenon arises: the number of pedestrians in the system must be greater than nine for a bifurcation—and hence for stop and go waves to be possible at all, independent of the density. A natural and rigid model of quantum groups

We introduce a natural (Frechet-Hopf) algebra A containing all generic Jimbo algebras U t (sl(2)) (as dense subalgebras). The Hopf structures on A extend (in a continuous way) the Hopf structures of generic U t (sl(2)). The Universal R-matrices converge in A\(\hat \otimes \)A. Using the (topological) dual of A, we recover the formalism of functions of noncommutative arguments. In addition, we show that all these Hopf structures on A are isomorphic (as bialgebras), and rigid in the category of bialgebras.
