ANTIMICROBIAL DITERPENOID ALKALOIDS FROM ERYTHROPHLEUM SUAVEOLENS (GUILL. & PERR.) BRENAN
2005
An investigation of the stem bark of Erythrophleum suaveolens (Guill. & Perr.) Brenan yielded the known amide norcassaide ( 1 ) and a new diterpenoid alkaloid named norerythrosuaveolide ( 2 ) which was characterized as 7β-hydroxy-7-deoxo-6-oxonorcassaide. The structures were established on the basis of one and two-dimensional 1 H and 13 C NMR spectral data. The compounds showed potent antimicrobial activities against bacteria and yeasts. First record of Icerya seychellarum and confirmed occurrence of Aulacaspis tubercularis (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) in Italy
2020
The Seychelles scale, Icerya seychellarum (Westwood, 1855) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Monophlebidae), is reported for the first time in Italy. Moreover, the occurrence of the white mango scale, Aulacaspis tubercularis (Newstead, 1906) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae), firstly reported in 1990 on mango trees growing outdoors in a nursery near Milazzo (Messina province, Sicily), and then intercepted in 2013 on mango plants imported from Florida (USA) to the Botanical Garden in Padova (Italy), is confirmed. Both species were found in two Sicilian mango orchards located in the province of Messina. Their introduction is most likely due to the orchards planting using infested mango nursery pla…
An approach to erythrophleum alkaloids. Synthesis of methyl (−)-4-epi-cassamate
1986
Abstract A synthetic approach to Erythrophleum alkaloids, involving as a key-step the regiospecific deprotonation of the ketone 5a, is described.

Lemierre syndrome: Current evidence and rationale of the Bacteria-Associated Thrombosis, Thrombophlebitis and LEmierre syndrome (BATTLE) registry.
2020
Abstract Lemierre syndrome is a rare but potentially fatal condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the head and neck district, preferentially affecting adolescents and young adults and manifesting as a complication of a local bacterial infection – typically, a pharyngotonsillitis or an abscess. It is historically associated with the Gram-negative anaerobic rod Fusobacterium necrophorum and with thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. However, its definition has never been firmly established, and its spectrum within the continuum of bacteria-associated thrombophlebitis may be larger than what presumed so far. Recent evidence suggests that its prognosis remains serious ev…
Risk Factors for Pulmonary Embolism in Patients with Paralysis and Deep Venous Thrombosis
2021
Background. Venous thromboembolism is a frequent complication and an important cause of death in patients with paralysis. We aimed to investigate predictors of pulmonary embolism (PE) and the impact of PE on the survival of patients with paralysis in comparison to those with deep venous thrombosis or thrombophlebitis (DVT). Methods: Patients were selected by screening the German nationwide inpatient sample (2005–2017) for paralysis, and were stratified for venous thromboembolism (VTE) and the VTE-sub-entity PE (ICD-code I26). Impact of PE on mortality and predictors for PE were analyzed. Results: Overall, 7,873,769 hospitalizations of patients with paralysis were recorded in Germany 2005–20…
Predictive value of the Kuijer score for bleeding and other adverse in-hospital events in patients with venous thromboembolism
2021
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) constitute a major global burden of disease. Current international guidelines recommend treatment with anticoagulant therapy after VTE for a duration of at least 3 months. Since anticoagulation also imposes an increased risk for bleeding events, the individual risk has to be evaluated to determine adequate treatment plans. The nationwide German inpatient sample of the years 2005-2017 was used for this analysis. Hospitalized VTE patients were stratified according to Kuijer risk class and the performance of the Kuijer score was evaluated to predict adverse in-hospital events.Overall, 1,204,895 VTE patients were treated between 2005 and 2017 in Germany and were incl…
Factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene G20210A mutations in Italian patients with Behçet's disease and deep vein thrombosis
2004
Objective To evaluate the frequency and type of vascular lesions and to study the association of factor V gene G1691A (Leiden) and prothrombin gene G20210A polymorphisms with venous thrombosis in Italian patients with Behcet's disease (BD). Methods Included were 118 consecutive Italian BD patients followed over a 3-year period (1997–1999) who satisfied the International Study Group criteria for BD. The control group consisted of 132 healthy Italian blood donors. All BD patients and controls were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction and allele-specific restriction enzyme techniques for factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene G20210A polymorphisms. Results Vascular lesions were observed in 37 …
Management of Lemierre Syndrome.
2022
Lemierre Syndrome is a rare form of septic thrombophlebitis of the head and neck veins, most typically of the internal jugular vein, which affects otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults after an oropharyngitis or other local infection. It is characterized by multiple septic embolization. Despite treatment, Lemierre Syndrome displays a high rate of in-hospital complications that include thrombus progression and a new peripheral septic embolization; moreover, it can be fatal or cause disabling sequelae. The mainstay of the treatment is antibiotic therapy; anticoagulation is often used, but its role is controversial. Surgical treatment is often necessary in case of peripheral septic le…
