Identification and climatology of cut-off lows near the tropopause.
2008
Cut-off low pressure systems (COLs) are defined as closed lows in the upper troposphere that have become completely detached from the main westerly current. These slow-moving systems often affect the weather conditions at the earth's surface and also work as a mechanism of mass transfer between the stratosphere and the troposphere, playing a significant role in the net flow of tropospheric ozone. In the first part of this work we provide a comprehensive summary of results obtained in previous studies of COLs. Following this, we present three long-term climatologies of COLs. The first two climatologies are based on the conceptual model of a COL, using European Centre for Medium-range Weather…
Thymosin α1 and α-Inteferon with Cisplatin and Etoposide in Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Phase II Study
1993
In recent years, biological response modifiers (BRMs) have emerged as an important new class of agents for treating cancer. Agents such as interferon (IFN) and interleukin 2 (IL-2) have been reported to induce significant tumor regression in various types of cancer usually resistant to chemotherapy (1,12), but their use in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has received little attention.
The HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin protects cells from the antineoplastic drugs doxorubicin and etoposide
2002
Ras-homologous GTPases are involved in the regulation of genotoxic stress-induced gene expression and cell death. Since they need C-terminal isoprenylation for correct intracellular localization and function, we investigated whether depletion of cells from isopren precursor moieties using the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin affects cellular sensitivity to DNA damaging drugs. Here we show that lovastatin renders cells highly resistant to the tumor-therapeutic compound doxorubicin. Desensitization by lovastatin was reverted by co-treatment with GGPP indicating that inhibition of protein geranylgeranylation is involved in acquired doxorubicin resistance. Lovastatin does not influence ce…

Microphysical and radiative changes in cirrus clouds by geoengineering the stratosphere
2013
[1] In the absence of tangible progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the implementation of solar radiation management has been suggested as measure to stop global warming. Here we investigate the impacts on northern midlatitude cirrus from continuous SO2emissions of 2–10 Mt/a in the tropical stratosphere. Transport of geoengineering aerosols into the troposphere was calculated along trajectories based on ERA Interim reanalyses using ozone concentrations to quantify the degree of mixing of stratospheric and tropospheric air termed “troposphericity”. Modeled size distributions of the geoengineered H2SO4-H2O droplets have been fed into a cirrus box model with spectral microphysics. Th…
Understanding color vision, with comments on mind and matter
2012
Much is known about the mental and physical aspects of color vision. Color vision, therefore, is a paradigm well suited for the discussion of the relationship between mind and matter. The aim of the present chapter is to support the proposition that mental affairs cannot be adequately understood if their neurobiological aspects are neglected. Although it is possible to focus on fundamental problems of general relevance when discussing mind and matter, this chapter will deal with specific observations rather than general issues. The possibility of generalizations derived from empirical results is always limited. Provided the conditions under which these observations were made can be confirme…
The Semantics of Musical Topoi
2015
The article introduces an empirical approach to studying music’s extrinsic meanings, based on the idea of musical topos as a set of musical entities that is delimited and furnished with meaning by extramusical associations in a listener population. The proposed methodology involves free, associative responses as well as responses on semantic variables addressing the imagery. After deriving potential topical structures for a given musical domain from the quantitative results, the structures are substantiated by using them to guide a rule-based, qualitative analysis of the free responses. The approach allows a view to the topical organization of a musical domain in which the identity of each …
LA CONSULTA NEGA L'ABBRACCIO VIRTUALE FRA FIGLI MINORI E DETENUTI AL 41-BIS ORD. PENIT., RIDIMENSIONANDO I DANNI SIMBIOTICI ORIGINATI DAL CARCERE
2021
Unraveling the extracellular matrix-tumor cell interactions to aid better targeted therapies for neuroblastoma
2021
Treatment in children with high-risk neuroblastoma remains largely unsuccessful due to the development of metastases and drug resistance. The biological complexity of these tumors and their microenvironment represent one of the many challenges to face. Matrix glycoproteins such as vitronectin act as bridge elements between extracellular matrix and tumor cells and can promote tumor cell spreading. In this study, we established through a clinical cohort and preclinical models that the interaction of vitronectin and its ligands, such as αv integrins, are related to the stiffness of the extracellular matrix in high-risk neuroblastoma. These marked alterations found in the matrix led us to speci…
Complementary and alternative treatment methods in children with cancer: A population-based retrospective survey on the prevalence of use in Germany.
2008
Abstract Introduction Few studies have been conducted to date on the prevalence of use of complementary and alternative treatment methods (CAMs) in paediatric oncology, and those that have been conducted are often not representative. We therefore decided to study a representative sample of children with cancer in the German population. Patients and methods The study took the form of a retrospective survey amongst all parents whose children were first diagnosed with a disease covered by the German Childhood Cancer Registry in 2001. The primary objectives of the survey were to establish the prevalence of use of CAM and the factors related to its use. Results Of the 1595 questionnaires sent ou…
