Road project opportunity costs subject to a regional constraint on greenhouse gas emissions
2012
Abstract France has constrained the Aquitaine region to set up a climate plan to avoid an emission of 2883 ktCO 2 eq for the period 2007–2013. In parallel, the region has decided to carry out the construction of road infrastructures in order to avoid very high congestion costs. Those road projects will involve an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during that period. In the present context of strong sustainability, all emissions (direct and indirect) generated by those projects should be offset. At the regional level, the offsetting of GHG emissions is usually carried out by implementing carbon sequestration projects or projects that reduce energy demand. This paper aims at determin…
Can We Really (All) Work Longer?
Trends in Healthy Life Expectancy According to Social Stratum in Germany
2013
Against the background of raising the retirement age to 67 years and the associated lengthening of working lifetimes in higher age groups, this article examines the question of the extent to which this political objective is covered by the health assets of the population. Here, we will first trace trends in “healthy” life expectancy among the total population for different points in time 1989, 1999 and 2009 on the basis of the data from the Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) and analyse these against the background of social strata indicators such as income and educational levels. Among others, one significant result is the fact that social differences have a far greater effect on healthy li…
Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to emission from the gamma-ray counterparts of neutrino events
2021
We investigate the possibility of detection of the VHE gamma-ray counterparts to the neutrino astrophysical sources within the Neutrino Target of Opportunity (NToO) program of CTA using the populations simulated by the FIRESONG software to resemble the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux measured by IceCube. We derive the detection probability for different zenith angles and geomagnetic field configurations. The difference in detectability of sources between CTA-North and CTA-South for the average geomagnetic field is not substantial. We investigate the effect of a higher night-sky background and the preliminary CTA Alpha layout on the detection probability.
Il Paradigma della Città Fluida
2013
The legal origin of income inequality
2014
The legal origin movement is implicitly functionalist, while it explicitly prioritizes economic dimensions of development. From this perspective, the empirical findings presented in this paper seem to uncover the existence of a paradox. On the one hand, common law countries are apparently characterized by countless advantages, yet they do not grow faster than civil law countries. On the other hand, common law countries present a more unequal distribution of income, thus suggesting that also from a static perspective there is no a priori reason to prefer a common law system. To further investigate this paradox, we analyze if common law countries are at least characterized by a better kind (e…
The role of embeddedness and top management teams on subsidiary initiative
2018
The importance of subsidiaries reaches its pick with their entrepreneurial role. Subsidiary initiatives (SI) are seen as “discrete, proactive undertaking that advances a new way for the corporation to use or expand its resources” (Birkinshaw, 2014, p. 203), which starts with the identification of an opportunity and should achieve the commitment of resources. Nonetheless, though initiatives are beneficial for the entire MNC (Bartlett & Ghoshal, 1988; Birkinshaw & Hood, 2000; Birkinshaw et al., 2005), they are not necessarily well receive by HQ but instead the MNC corporate immune system activates and initiative are rejected (Birkinshaw & Ridderstråle, 1999). This happens because initiatives …
DELL’UTRI E CONTRADA “GEMELLI DIVERSI”: È LA REVISIONE EUROPEA LO STRUMENTO DI OTTEMPERANZA ALLE SENTENZE CEDU
2017
Italian supreme Court denies that the origin of external participation in mafia-type criminal association lies in case law and envisages the European review as the tool to comply with ECtHR judgements in similar cases to that of Contrada. This jurisprudence provides a proper opportunity for an in-depth exam…
Who turns to entrepreneurship later in life? - Push and pull in Finnish rural and urban areas
2014
Age is an important factor in entrepreneurship. The paths into entrepreneurship at a later age may be varied. Self-employment in later life may be either a form of partial retirement or a career option. Older individuals may also be pushed into self-employment. The focus of this paper is on the career choices of older individuals and their background motivations in Finland. The purpose is to analyse the factors and motives in terms of the push and pull dichotomy that lead individuals to enter self-employment at older ages in different types of labour markets in Finland, viz., rural and urban areas. Although some studies have focused on transitions to self-employment among older workers, que…

Teams and project performance: an ability, motivation, and opportunity approach
2020
This article analyzes the relationships between project performance and the team’s ability, motivation, and opportunity (AMO). We contribute to the project management literature by exploring which combinations of AMO factors are best for project performance at different levels of complexity. We test our hypotheses on a sample of 285 projects. Our study shows that in simple projects, ability is the key factor both as a main effect and as a constraining factor that acts as a bottleneck for project performance. In the case of complex projects, the multiplicative model is superior given the significant interaction effects of motivation.
