Single-frequency active Q-switched Distributed Fiber Laser Using Acoustic Waves

2007

This letter presents a single mode, actively Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser. Acoustic pulses are launched into an erbium-doped fiber Bragg grating, resulting in the introduction of a traveling defect. Thus, a transmission peak appears in the reflection band while the pulse travels along the grating. This effect allows the laser to operate in a Q-switched regime, providing optical pulses which repetition rate was continuously tuned up to 10 kHz. Pulses of 168 mW of peak power and 73 ns of temporal width were obtained at low repetition rate.

Polarization switchable Erbium-doped all-fiber laser

2008

We report an experimental study of an erbium-doped all-fiber laser with electrically switchable output polarization. Fiber Bragg grating written in a polarization maintaining optical fiber and attached to a piezo-ceramic actuator is used to commute the polarization state of the laser emission. The laser oscillates at one of two orthogonal polarizations depending on voltage applied to the actuator.

Actively Q-switched DFB fiber laser for Brillouin sensor applications

2009

Q-switching of distributed feedback (DFB) fiber lasers permits to achieve high peak powers, preserving an ultra narrow linewidth [1,2]. The development of a new in-line acousto-optic modulator based on a magnetostrictive actuator, instead of a piezoelectric-based device, permits an efficient excitation of elastic pulses propagating along the optical fiber and an easy access to both emission outputs of the laser. The repetition rate can be continuously adjusted, as well as the amplitude of the elastic pulses. The interaction of these elastic pulses with a fiber Bragg grating written in an erbium-doped fiber permits an actively Q-switched operation of the DFB fiber laser [3]. The birefringenc…

Single- to three-wavelength switchable ytterbium-doped fiber laser based on intracavity induced loss by a long-period holey fiber grating

2011

In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a versatile and simple single-, dual- and three-wavelength switchable ytterbium-doped fiber laser using the intracavity induced-loss generated by a mechanically induced long-period grating (MLPFG) in a holey fiber. The laser net gain in the cavity is reshaped through the MLPFG by adjusting the twist rate and the pressure of the holey fiber in the long-period grating. In this way, the twist response of the MLPFG enables the laser to switch between the single-, dual-, and three-wavelength operations and the tuning of the simultaneous two- and three-wavelengths. These results are of great interest in the design of flexible multiwavelength sources with …

Smart Q-switching for single-pulse generation in an erbium-doped fiber laser

2012

In this paper, we report an active Q-switching of an erbium-doped fiber laser with special modulation functions and novel laser geometry. We experimentally demonstrate that using such a smart Q-switch approach, Q-switch ripple-free pulses with Gaussian-like shape and 17.3 ns width can be easily obtained. The idea behind the smart Q-switch is to suppress one of two laser waves contra-propagating along the fiber cavity, which arises after Q-cell opening, and to eliminate the minor sub-pulses.

Enhanced Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser based on acoustic pulses

2009

An acoustically Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser with enhanced performance is presented. It is based on an FBG written in an erbium doped fiber, in which a dynamic defect is introduced by means of a short acoustic pulse. The performance of the laser depends on the reflectivity of the grating. In this work, we present two different Q-switched distributed feedback fiber lasers realized with active gratings of different reflectivities. Both lasers are characterized at different pump powers and repetition rates. It is shown that the performance of the laser based on the weaker grating was significantly improved with respect to the laser based on the stronger grating. In terms of peak…

4W continuous-wave narrow-linewidth tunable solid-state laser source at 546nm by externally frequency doubling a ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber la…

2009

A high-power continuous-wave coherent light source at 545.5nm is described. We use 8.3W from a solid-state ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber oscillator/amplifier system as input into an external frequency doubling stage. This system produces up to 4.1 W of stable green single-frequency laser radiation. We characterize the light source by performing absorption spectroscopy on iodine across the full tuning range of the fiber laser and saturation spectroscopy on one strong iodine line of the doppler-broadened spectrum.

The Bimodal Distribution in Exoplanet Radii: Considering Varying Core Compositions and $\rm H_{2}$ Envelope's Sizes

2020

Several models have been introduced in order to explain the radius distribution in exoplanet radii observed by Fulton et al. (2017) with one peak at $\rm \sim 1.3 R_{\oplus} $ the other at $\rm \sim 2.4 R_{\oplus} $ and the minimum at $\rm \sim 1.75R_{\oplus} $. In this paper we focus on the hypothesis that the exoplanet size distribution is caused by stellar XUV-induced atmospheric loss. We evolve $10^{6}$ synthetic exoplanets by exposing them to XUV irradiation from synthetic ZAMS stars. For each planet we set a different interior composition which ranged from $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ Fe (very dense) through $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ $\rm MgSiO_{3}$ (average density) and to $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ $\rm H_{2}O…

A method for eluting DNA in a wide range of molecular weights from agarose gels

1991

We have developed a simple and rapid method for recovering DNAs of a wide range of molecular weights from agarose gels. A DNA-containing gel slice is placed on a Parafilm sheet in the center of a circular (positive) electrode and covered with a drop of buffer, while a linear (negative) electrode is placed on the top of the gel and driven about 1 mm into the gel itself. When a continuous current is applied, the DNA migrates into the buffer toward the circular electrode. We have obtained almost total recovery of DNAs up to 10 kb in size. Our method may also be used, under appropriate conditions, for higher molecular weight DNAs. The yield and all the biological assays performed on the DNAs ob…

Load carrying capacity of RC compressed columns strengthened with steel angles and strips

2012

Abstract In this paper a comparison between the analytical expressions for the prediction of the load carrying capacity of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) columns with steel angles and strips is made. Expressions examined consider: the strength contribution due to the confinement effects induced by transverse strips; the composite action due to steel angles and unconfined concrete core; the strength contribution due to the composite actions of angles and concrete core taking into account that steel angles are subjected to axial force and bending moment and concrete core is confined by transverse strips. Design rules given by recent codes for the design of the strengthened columns are …
