MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMISATION OF BUILDINGS AND BUILDING CLUSTERS PERFORMANCE: A LIFE CYCLE THINKING APPROACH
2021
Cone-beam computed tomography and its applications in dental and maxillofacial radiology.
2020
Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was first used in dental and maxillofacial radiology (DMFR) at the end of the 1990s. Since then, it has been successfully established as the standard three-dimensional radiographic imaging technique in DMFR, with a wide variety of applications in this field. This manuscript briefly reviews the background information on the technology and summarises available data on effective dose and dose optimisation. In addition, typical clinical applications and indications of the technique in DMFR are presented.
A demand-based methodology for planning the bus network of a small or medium town.
2010
This work aims at developing a demand-based methodology for designing the bus network of a small or medium town. The proposed modelling tool adopts a multi-agent objective function which evaluates performance in the context of different stakeholders: the surplus of travellers (car and bus users); the bus service provider’s revenues and operation costs. This approach was applied to an existing bus network, serving city of Trapani, which is a medium town in the south of Italy (Sicily), with 100000 inhabitants. The bus-based public transport system attracts only about 5% of commuter trips within Trapani (source: National Institute of Statistics, 2005). This paper reports on an analysis of the …
Focused microwave-assisted Soxhlet extraction: An expeditive approach for the isolation of lipids from sausage products
2003
A prototype of extractor based on the conventional Soxhlet principles but assisted in the cartridge zone by focused microwaves is proposed for accelerating the extraction of lipids from sausage products. The extraction process has been optimised using a multivariate design involving the main variables influencing the performance of the prototype (namely, irradiation power P, irradiation time T and number of cycles C). Under the optimum working conditions (P=160 W, T=10 s and C=14), the extraction of lipids from different Spanish sausage products is complete in 45 min. The extracts thus obtained have been compared with those provided by conventional Soxhlet extraction for 8 h by development …
The Gantry-Tau parallel kinematic machine-kinematic and elastodynamic design optimisation
2011
Pubished version of an article in the journal: Meccanica. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11012-010-9394-9 One of the main advantages of the Gantry-Tau machine is a large accessible workspace/footprint ratio compared to many other parallel machines. The optimal kinematic, elastostatic and elastodynamic design parameters of the machine are still difficult to calculate and this paper introduces an optimisation scheme based on the geometric and functional dependencies to define the workspace and first resonance frequency. This method assumes that each link and universal joint can be described by a mass-spring-damper model and calculates the transfer function fr…
Analysis and control of the muscle force by electrostimulation
2019
Muscle reconditioning techniques have been developed extensively in these recent years as part of the reeducation of the atrophied muscle, but also to reinforce the healthy muscle of the sedentary or sportive subject. The monitoring of the stimulated muscle by recording the electrical activity and the muscle response is necessary to detect for example the muscle fatigue and/or avoid tissue damage in the case of deconditioned muscle. The aim of this thesis is initially to analyse the muscle response in terms of force produced as response to the electrostimulation (ES). This analysis has allowed us to develop a new force model that can predict the effect of the stimulation amplitude of the cu…
Optimisation non-lisse pour l'estimation de composants immunitaires cellulaires dans un environnement tumoral
2021
In this PhD proposal we will investigate new regularization methods of inverse problems that provide an absolute quantification of immune cell subpopulations. The mathematical aspect of this PhD proposal is two-fold. The first goal is to enhance the underlying linear model through a more refined construction of the expression matrix. The second goal is, given this linear model, to derive the best possible estimator. These two issues can be treated in a decoupled way, which is the standard for existing methods such as Cibersort, or as a coupled optimization problem (which is known as blind deconvolution in signal processing).
Model predictive control for continuous lactide ring‐opening polymerization processes
2020
International audience; Polylactic acid (PLA) is an attractive environment-friendly thermoplastic that is bio-sourced and biodegradable. PLA is industrially produced by the ring-opening polymerization of Lactide. This reaction is sensitive to drifts in the operating conditions and impurities in the raw materials that may affect the reaction rate as well as the polymer properties, which can be very costly in continuous processes. It is therefore crucial to employ a control strategy that allows recovering the nominal conditions and maintaining the desired properties and conversion level in case of drift. Three control strategies are discussed in this paper: Proportional-Integral controller (P…

Prediction of arrival times and human resources allocation for container terminal
2011
Increasing competition in the container shipping sector has meant that terminals are having to equip themselves with increasingly accurate analytical and governance tools. A transhipment terminal is an extremely complex system in terms of both organisation and management. Added to the uncertainty surrounding ships’ arrival time in port and the costs resulting from over-underestimation of resources is the large number of constraints and variables involved in port activities. Predicting ships delays in advance means that the relative demand for each shift can be determined with greater accuracy, and the basic resources then allocated to satisfy that demand. To this end, in this article we pro…
