Experimental Investigations and Ab Initio Studies of Tellurium(II) Dithiolates, Te(SR)2

1999

The reaction between Te(O(i)Pr)(4) and HSR offers a new and effective route to tellurium dithiolates, Te(SR)(2). Te(S(i)Pr)(2) (1) and Te(S(t)Bu)(2) (2) are stable compounds whereas Te(SPh)(2) (3) slowly decomposes at room temperature to give Te and Ph(2)S(2). IR spectra of 1-3 and ab initio calculations (HF/3-21G(d) and MP2 with double-zeta polarization effective core potential basis set) show nu(as)(Te-S) and nu(s)(Te-S) to be around 340 and 380 cm(-)(1), respectively. UV spectra exhibit similar lambda(max) (346-348 nm) for all three compounds, with the greater extinction coefficient of 3 accounting for its different and more intense color. Analysis of the molecular orbitals of the model …

Ab initio study of the electronic and atomic structure of the wolframite-type ZnWO4

2009

Abstract Ab initio quantum chemistry calculations of the structural and electronic properties of monoclinic wolframite-type ZnWO 4 crystal have been performed within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method using six different Hamiltonians, based on density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT theory. The obtained results for optimized structural parameters, band gap and partial density of states are compared with available experimental data, and the best agreement is observed for hybrid Hamiltonians. The calculations show that zinc tungstate is a wide band gap material, with the direct gap about 4.6 eV, whose valence band has largely O 2p character, w…

Theoretical study of the derivative hydrocarbons of biphenylene. I. Electronic spectrum of the biphenylene

1969

The electronic spectrum of biphenylene has been studied theoretically. The investigation is based on the semi-empirical LCAO SCF MO method with various degrees of approximations. The results have been analysed with regard to the following two factors: (a) The difference in effective electronegativity between the carbon atoms in the four-membered ring and the other carbon atoms in the molecule. (b) The inclusion of doubly excited configurations in the description of the π-electronic molecular states. The theory satisfactorily interprets the excitation energies and the nature of the electronic transitions. The predictions are particularly affected by the inclusion of the doubly excited config…

17O NMR study of chlorinated anisoles

1988

The 17O NMR chemical shifts of anisole and all 19 chlorinated anisoles measured in CDCI3 at ambient temperature show a dispersion of approximately 40 ppm. The substituent chemical shifts (SCS) of di- or more highly chlorinated compounds cannot be reproduced by addition of single substituent effects. Theoretical calculations of the 17O NMR chemical shifts have been attempted by molecular mechanical and semi-empirical molecular orbital methods at the INDO level, but the results are not satisfactory.

Analytic first derivatives for a spin-adapted open-shell coupled cluster theory: Evaluation of first-order electrical properties

2014

An analytic scheme is presented for the evaluation of first derivatives of the energy for a unitary group based spin-adapted coupled cluster (CC) theory, namely, the combinatoric open-shell CC (COSCC) approach within the singles and doubles approximation. The widely used Lagrange multiplier approach is employed for the derivation of an analytical expression for the first derivative of the energy, which in combination with the well-established density-matrix formulation, is used for the computation of first-order electrical properties. Derivations of the spin-adapted lambda equations for determining the Lagrange multipliers and the expressions for the spin-free effective density matrices for…

Orbital-controlled reactions catalysed by zeolites: Electrophilic alkylation of aromatics

1994

The role of orbital control in product selectivity during electrophilic aromatic alkylation catalysed by zeolites was studied both theoretically and experimentally. In order to discuss this, the alkylation of toluene and m-xylene by methanol was carried out on a series of large-pore zeolites (HY). The changes in the para to ortho ratio observed on changing the framework Si/Al ratio of the zeolites were related to ab initio molecular orbital calculations of the LUMO energy of structurally alike model clusters but containing different tetrahedral cations around the active site. The observed correlation is discussed in terms of the HSAB principle by taking into account the influence of the cat…

Full configuration interaction calculation of BeH adiabatic states.

2008

An all-electron full configuration interaction (FCI) calculation of the adiabatic potential energy curves of some of the lower states of BeH molecule is presented. A moderately large ANO basis set of atomic natural orbitals (ANO) augmented with Rydberg functions has been used in order to describe the valence and Rydberg states and their interactions. The Rydberg set of ANOs has been placed on the Be at all bond distances. So, the basis set can be described as 4s3p2d1f3s2p1d(BeH)+4s4p2d(Be). The dipole moments of several states and transition dipole strengths from the ground state are also reported as a function of the R(Be-H) distance. The position and the number of states involved in sever…

On a topological interpretation of electronic and vibrational molecular energies

1998

Abstract A relationship between Randic's connectivity index and various quantum mechanical parameters derived from the Huckel Molecular Orbital (HMO) approach is demonstrated. When applied to conjugated hydrocarbons, this index represents the measure of the global π electron molecular energy and, therefore, of the resonance energy. Moreover, the development of the procedure, allows the introduction of a new definition of the bond order which, in turn, makes possible a better prediction not only for bond lengths of naphtalene but also for the resonance integral and conjugation energy for butadiene. Also, a corrected value for the Randic index is deduced, which allows for the reduction of the…

Orbiting Orbitals: Visualization of Vi-Bronic Motion at a Conical Intersection

2013

The Jahn-Teller (JT) active unpaired electron of single metalloporphyrin radical anions is imaged through scanning tunneling microscopy. It is demonstrated that the electron is delocalized over the porphyrin macrocycle and its topographic image is determined by vibronic motion: the orbital of the electron adiabatically follows the zero-point pseudorotation of skeletal deformations. Transformation of the polar graphs of the observed images allows visualization of the adiabatic vibrational density to which the electron is coupled. The vibronic potential at the conical intersection is visualized and the half-integer angular momentum characteristic of the Berry phase is revealed in the radial f…
