Relation between Social Conservatism, Moral Competence, Moral Orientations, and the Importance of Moral Foundations

2017

AbstractThis paper examines the relation between moral competence, moral orientations, importance of moral foundations, and political orientation, by combining two theoretical approaches in moral psychology--the cognitive perspective and social-intuitionist perspective. The participants (Study 1 N=348, aged 18 to 67, and Study 2 N = 361, aged 16 to 74) completed the Moral Competence Test (formerly Moral Judgment Test, Lind, 1978, 2008), the 30-Item Full Version of the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (Graham, Haidt & Nosek, 2008), and measurements of political orientation (a seven-point self-evaluation scale in study 1 and an 8-item social conservatism scale in Study 2). There was a nega…

An overall description of retinotopic mapping in the cat's visual cortex areas 17, 18, and 19.

1985

Mathematical functions are derived which model the retinotopic mapping in the cat's visual cortical areas 17, 18, and 19. All three mappings are simple modifications of a complex power function with an exponent of 0.43. This function is decomposed so as to give an intermediate stage which is common to all three mappings and can be regarded as a model of the lateral geniculate nucleus mapping. The influence of retinotopic mapping on visual receptive fields was studied. The results show that a dependence of the receptive field properties on the position in the visual field is to be expected.

Young adults personal concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland: an issue for social concern

2020

PurposeThis study focuses on how young adults face the COVID-19 pandemic by investigating their personal concerns about mental well-being, career/studies and economic situation. The authors investigated how young adults' (aged 18–29) personal concerns differ from older people's concerns (aged 30–65) and which person- and context-related antecedents relate to personal concerns.Design/methodology/approachData of Finnish young adults aged 18–29 (n = 222), who participated in the “Corona Consumers” survey (N = 1,000) in April 2020, were analyzed by path analysis and compared to participants aged 30–65 by independent samples t-test.FindingsYoung adults were significantly more concerned about the…

The impact of inequality on mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review.

2021

Previous research on pandemics and emergencies has shown that such events often widen health inequalities in society and have a greater impact on socially disadvantaged groups No review has so far looked at the impact of inequality factors on mental health outcomes during the novel coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) The aim of the current review was therefore to assess the impact of inequality factors on mental health outcomes during COVID-19 After registration on PROSPERO, a systematic review was conducted for papers published up to July 31, 2020, using the databases Google Scholar, PsycINFO, PubMed (MEDLINE), and Web of Science The following inequality factors were considered: education, inc…

Gestational exposure to cocaine alters cocaine reward

2006

Exposure of the developing foetus to drugs of abuse during pregnancy may lead to persistent abnormalities of brain systems involved in drug addiction. Mice prenatally exposed to cocaine (25 mg/kg), physiological saline or non-treated during the last 7 days of pregnancy were evaluated in adulthood for the rewarding properties of cocaine (3, 25 and 50 mg/kg), using the conditioned place preference procedure. Dams treated with physiological saline gained significantly less weight over the course of gestation than controls; no other differences were observed in the maternal and offspring data. All the animals developed preference to 3 and 25 mg/kg of cocaine, but those treated prenatally with c…

La gestion de l'orientation scolaire au Laos

2005

Being a multiethnic state emerging from more than half a century of crises and conflicts, Laos's priority is to increase rates of schooling in primary schools. As part of a centralized organisation of state where nearly all education is given in public schools, the choice of a career is determined at all levels by examinations. Under a system for regulating flows, based on mere school results, what pupils wish to study is hardly taken into account.

Quantification of the microstructural evolution of polycrystalline fabrics using FAME: Application to in situ deformation of ice

2014

Abstract In geology, glaciology and material science new technological advances result in an ever increasing amount of data and datasets, in particular when in situ experiments are conducted. Rapid, rigorous and reliable statistical treatment is needed to allow researchers to access these large datasets for further analysis. Here, we present FAME (Fabric Analyser based Microstructure Evaluation), a suite of Matlab® scripts that utilize the Matlab® open-source toolboxes MTEX and PolyLX (optional) for rapid quantification of thin section data. The data has been collected using an automated Fabric Analyser at a spatial resolution of 5 μm/pixel. From the dataset, grain maps are reconstructed an…

Membrane Structure of Aquaporin Observed with Combined Experimental and Theoretical Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

2021

High-resolution structural information on membrane proteins is essential for understanding cell biology and for the structure-based design of new medical drugs and drug delivery strategies. X-ray diffraction (XRD) can provide angstrom-level information about the structure of membrane proteins, yet for XRD experiments, proteins are removed from their native membrane environment, chemically stabilized, and crystallized, all of which can compromise the conformation. Here, we describe how a combination of surface-sensitive vibrational spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations can account for the native membrane environment. We observe the structure of a glycerol facilitator channel (GlpF)…

Influencia del clima motivacional en clase sobre el compromiso escolar de los adolescentes y su logro académico

2017

The scientific literature provides empirical evidence on the relationship between school engagement and numerous important variables of the adolescents’ educational context. The school engagement has been related, among other important constructs, with burnout of both teachers and students, school performance, satisfaction with the school, behavioral disruption, goal orientation and motivational climate in the classroom. Because of it, the aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between perceived motivational class climate and students’ academic achievement, with school engagement acting as a mediator. A sample of 2028 teenagers completed various instruments to measure the percept…

Perceived classroom goal structures as predictors of students’ personal goals

2020

This study focused on the question of how to enhance a mastery-goal orientation in the classroom. We started from the perspective of the achievement goal theory, which assumes that the goals that students have (personal goals) relate to the goals that are set in the classroom (classroom goal structures). In classrooms where teachers focus on learning and effort -instead of normative standards and social comparison- mastery goals are enhanced. This type of classroom can be endorsed by focusing on the following classroom structures: Task design, Autonomy, Recognition, Grouping, Evaluation, and Time (TARGET). The present study investigated how classroom goal structures as perceived by students…
