Relations Between Achievement Goal Orientations and Math Achievement in Primary Grades: A Follow‐Up Study
2010
The aim of the present study was to investigate children’s achievement goal orientations and their relations to math achievement in the primary grades. The sample consisted of 179 children who were in the 2nd and 3rd grades during the first measurement and in the 3rd and 4th grades during the second measurement. Children’s self‐ratings were obtained on their goal orientations, their math performance was tested and their math grades were taken into account. Teacher ratings were obtained on each child’s effort in class. Children’s self‐reported performance‐avoidance goals were found to be related to their achievement outcomes. Math achievement seems to influence children’s achievement goal or…
Effective pursuit of personal goals: The fostering effect of dispositional optimism on goal commitment and goal progress
2015
Abstract Personal goals play a leading role in directing behavior and influencing well-being. Thus, it is important to assess goal dimensions promoting effective goal pursuit. The current research aimed at identifying the best predictors of goal pursuit, operationalized as perceived goal progress, among goal-related variables and individual differences in dispositional optimism. Two studies examined the influence of optimism on goal progress, commitment, expectancy, value, and conflict. Moreover, the mediation effect of expectancy in the relationships among optimism, commitment and progress was assessed. Participants in the first cross-sectional study were 283 young people (19–32 years old)…
Multiple constituency evaluation in sport policy
2004
AbstractThe purpose of this study is to show, how the evaluation process worked, when evaluation method was the multiple constituency evaluation procedure. The research material was Finnish state government’s platform during the years 1995-2003 and also government’s sport policy impacts to Sport Policy in European Union. The goal and objective of modern evaluation research in Sport Policy is to chart, or even call into question, societal functions and programmes. Policy-analytical evaluation research has in Sport Policy been characterised as being too goal oriented, which causes problems when adapting set goals into concrete assessment criteria, especially in the evaluation of public activi…
Consumer Motivations for Click-and-Collect and Home Delivery in Online Shopping
2018
Multichannel retailers are implementing cross-shopping options such as click-and-collect with the objective of better serving their customers. When consumers shop online to multichannel retailers they usually can choose between home delivery or click-and-collect (delivery at a nearby store). In this paper we investigate the consumers’ motivations behind this choice. Our results reveal that click-and-collect is explained by higher hedonic orientation whereas home delivery is explained by convenience orientation. Immediate gratification, and perceived delivery risk do not play a significant role in the choice.
Does leader–member exchange buffer or intensify detrimental reactions to psychological contract breach? The role of employees' career orientation
2018
There is an ongoing debate about two contradictory moderating effects of leader–member exchange (LMX) on the relationship between psychological contract breach (PCB) and work outcomes. Whereas some studies demonstrated LMX to be a social support resource capable of buffering the negative effects of PCB, findings from other research suggest that employees show stronger negative reactions to PCB when the quality of relationships with leaders is high. The present study addresses how these contradictory results can be explained by individuals' career orientations. We surveyed a representative random sample of 954 employees from various organizations and occupations to test whether employees wit…
Recognising a hand by grasp.
2000
The present study aimed to demonstrate that motor representations are used to recognise biological stimuli. In three experiments subjects were required to judge laterality of hands and forearms presented by pictures. The postures of the hands were those assumed when holding a small, medium and large sphere. In experiment 1, the sphere held in hand was presented, whereas in experiment 2 it was absent. In experiment 3, the same images, showing holding-a-sphere hands, as in experiment 1 were presented, but without forearm. In all experiments one finger of each hand could be absent. In experiment 1 recognition time was longer for those hand postures for which the corresponding grasping motor ac…
Synthetic individual binaural audio delivery by pinna image processing
2014
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a system for customized binaural audio delivery based on the extraction of relevant features from a 2-D representation of the listener’s pinna. Design/methodology/approach – The most significant pinna contours are extracted by means of multi-flash imaging, and they provide values for the parameters of a structural head-related transfer function (HRTF) model. The HRTF model spatializes a given sound file according to the listener’s head orientation, tracked by sensor-equipped headphones, with respect to the virtual sound source. Findings – A preliminary localization test shows that the model is able to statically render the elevation of a vi…
Task and Ego Goal Orientations across the Youth Sports Experience
2017
Since the late 1980s, Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) has flourished in the competitive sports research across all age groups. One central proposition is the undifferentiated conception of ability exist until approximately 12 years of age. Given the volume of AGT age-specific studies, quantitative analysis of available youth studies allows for examining whether the goal orientations (i.e., task and ego) scores change based on age (i.e., undifferentiated to the differentiated conception of ability). Hence, the purpose of this quantitative based review was to determine whether task and ego orientation values differ based on age. To achieve our objective, we conducted a meta-analysis with 16 stu…
Future Orientation and Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Italian University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Resilience and the…
2022
Several studies have already examined the psychological impact of COVID-19 on psychological well-being in samples of the general population. However, given the importance of future orientation for university students’ mental well-being, it is important to explore whether and how COVID-19 affected this vulnerable population. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the protective role of future orientation and the mediating effect of resilience on negative emotional symptoms (anxiety and depression). An online questionnaire was administered to a sample of 244 non-infected Italian university students. The mediation analysis results indicated that resilience fully mediated the relation…
