Sustainability initiatives and the stakeholders involved : a case study of the GOLDEN Project and the electric utility industry

2017

This piece of research focuses primarily on which are the main types of sustainability initiatives within the electric utility sector with direct attention on five companies being Eletrobras, Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk AG, Fortum, Copel and Edison. Additionally this research looks at the primary stakeholders who are both the drivers and recipients of these specific set of sustainability initiatives. In order to obtain results to these questions, I examined the sustainability reports of the five aforementioned companies for years 2008 and 2014 from the GOLDEN Project database. I used qualitative content analysis as my method to establish which initiatives and stakeholders were…

ARGUMENTS FOR CSR-BASED SUSTAINABLE COMPETITIVENESS OF MULTINATIONALS IN EMERGING MARKETS (PART II)

2015

The (two parts of the) paper aims to bring into discussion the case of CSR-based sustainable competitiveness of multinationals in emerging market economies, through an interdisciplinary approach (international business and strategic management) applied to a multilevel analysis (country and company). The main conclusion of the paper is that, despite the circumstances that nowadays characterize international business in general and the emerging market economies in particular, such a transformation in business models is not only desirable, but mandatory. Key arguments in favor of this assumption are found (both theoretically and empirically) at global/general level and, as well, at the emergin…

THROUGH CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY TO GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

2013

The goal of sustainable development is one of the most actual and stringent desideratum equally declaimed and assumed nowadays at all of the society’s levels – by individuals (politicians, academics, and civil society militants), organizations (firms as well as non-for-profit organizations of any kind) and authorities (local, national, regional, global). This goal offers to each one of them the opportunity to act responsible (through corporate social responsibility policies and practices developed by their management) but also the threat of falling into the trap of not reaching the global (sustainable) competitiveness that each one of them dreams about; so, it depends only on each and all o…

The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility and Its Influences on Vietnamese Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Ho Chi Minh City

2020

In the new era, the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for business organizations is a matter of primary concern and has been researched by scholars around the world. Interest in CSR in business enterprises is often neglected due to its high-cost factor and the enterprises only focused on its operations and profitability for the existence of a business. If the enterprises have a good CSR policy within their development strategy, they will attain greater success. It was deemed that the empirical study adopted a descriptive survey method, 103 data samples were selected from the SMEs for analysis. The results indicated that SME management who adopted and implemented CSR polici…

Institutional arrangements for sustainable development: Cases from the Navarra Province (Spain).

2015

After more than 20 years of the Earth Summit, Sustainable development is still recognized as one of the main challenges of the XXIst century. World leaders are putting new emphasis on the need to resolve urgent environmental challenges underlining their link with the wellbeing of humankind and the very conditions that made life possible on the planet. We are immersed in complex socio-ecological systems where sectoral or simplified responses are not adequate. A more systemic vision is imperative to effectively address the challenges faced. New approaches are being developed to integrate social, environmental and economic concerns in all human activities. Particular attention is given to deco…

Molecular analysis of lichen-associated bacterial communities.

2006

The bacterial communities associated with 11 different lichen samples (belonging to eight different species) from different habitats were investigated. The culturable aerobic-heterotrophic fraction of the bacterial communities was isolated from nine lichen samples on protein-rich and sugar-rich/N-free media. Thirty-four bacterial isolates were purified and pooled into groups (phylotypes) by analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer polymorphism. Twenty five phylotypes were identified, each comprising between one and three isolates. One isolate of each phylotype was partially sequenced and the resulting 16S rRNA gene sequences were compared in a phylogenetic analysis. Three gener…

The Jäntti approach to adsorption with increasing gas pressure

2002

Jäntti introduced a method of calculating equilibrium adsorption from measurements where the pressure of the gas was varied in a stepwise manner. His aim was to shorten the time necessary for a given measurement. The method was applied to gas/solid systems in which simple adsorption processes occurred and where the number of adsorption sites was infinite. The present paper discusses the case where no adsorption is possible on an already occupied site (Langmuir isotherm) while the number of positions available for adsorption is considered limited. The advantages of using a gas pressure that increases linearly with time are evident for studies with this limitation. It is shown that such meas…

Excitation Energy-Transfer in the LH2 Antenna of Photosynthetic Purple Bacteria via Excitonic B800 and B850 States

2000

A newly developed CIEM method that uses a combination of semi-empirical or ab-initio configuration interaction methods and exciton theory to predict electronic energies, eigenstates, absorption and CD spectra of aggregated chromophoric systems with environmental interactions included is extended and used for estimation of excitation energy transfer rates. Excitonic energy levels of the two ring systems the B800 and the B850 of the light harvesting antenna LH2 of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila and the corresponding absorption spectrum were calculated by assuming inter-ring interactions to be zero. Excitation energy transfer rates were calculated by using the Fermi Golden rule with the dipole - …
