How educators commit to enhancing children’s participation in early childhood education pedagogical plans
2022
Background: This is a descriptive study of children’s participation plans in early childhood education (ECE) settings in Finland. The study adopted a multidimensional approach to find out how practices of children’s participation were conceived in pedagogical plans made by ECE staff, representing a focus that is rare in the existing body of research. Aim: Aim of the study was to investigate educators’ commitments to enhancing children’s participation in pedagogical practices in their ECE settings. Setting: Ten centre-based plans for children’s participation composed by ECE staff at ECE centres were selected for the document data in this study. Methods: This study employs the categorisation …
Protocol for a participatory survey to investigate the long-term effectiveness of adult psychiatric services (PSILEAPS) : a prospective exploratory c…
2022
Mental health research and practice is currently moving beyond a focus on group-level symptom reduction models. Hence, research and treatment increasingly emphasize the real-life individual needs of service users and their social networks. One example is the Open Dialogue approach (OD), which has demonstrated promising outcomes in the Finnish Western Lapland (WL) catchment area. Nevertheless, it is unclear how OD-based services have so far been maintained in WL. It is also unclear how the experiences of multi-disciplinary care teams, service users and their social network members differ, with regard to differing approaches to mental health treatment. More generally, there is a global need f…
2016
Bakalaura darba galvenais mērķis bija izanalizēt parastās ievas Padus racemosa ilgtermiņa tendences kopš 1927.gada, kā arī raksturot āra bērza Betula pendula, parastās lazdas Corylus avellana, baltalkšņa Alnus incana un parastā pīlādža Sorbus aucuparia pavasara fenoloģisko fāžu reģionālās izmaiņas Latvijā references periodā (1981.-2010.gads), izmantojot brīvprātīgo novērotāju vēsturiskos datus. Veikta digitālo fotoattēlu reģionāla analīze parastās ievas Padus racemosa fāzēm 2015. un 2016.gadā, izmantojot portāla Dabasdati.lv datu bāzi. Periodā no 1981.gada līdz 2010.gadam ir novērojams, ka pavasara fenoloģiskās fāzes iestājušās par 2-17 dienām agrāk, nekā laika posmā no 1971.-2000.gadam. Pa…
Pickering Emulsion Gels Based on Halloysite Nanotubes and Ionic Biopolymers: Properties and Cleaning Action on Marble Surface
2019
We have fabricated ecocompatible Pickering emulsions based on halloysite nanotubes and ionic biopolymers (chitosan and pectin) from renewable resources. The effect of pectin and chitosan on the Pickering emulsion was investigated by direct visualization of the oil droplets and by the thermodynamic characterization at the interface. Pectin enhances the Pickering emulsion stability, while a phase separation and nonhomogeneous gel was observed in the presence of chitosan. We have demonstrated that the Pickering emulsion in a pectin based gel phase is suitable for wax layer removal from a marble surface. A controlled cleaning is achieved by tuning the contact time between the gel and the marble…
How does university teachers’ pedagogical training meet topical challenges raised by educational research? A case study from Finland
2023
Through a literature review, this study identified research themes related to university pedagogy and examined how these themes appear in the curricula of university pedagogy courses and in the experiences of the participants and trainers of these courses at a Finnish research university. The literature review produced a multidimensional model of the relationships between identified themes, which can be used as an analytical tool for examining pedagogical training. Analysis of the courses revealed a need to broaden the understanding of the course contents and practices and their alignment to global, societal, and labour-market needs. peerReviewed
Capability to be educated : inspiring and inclusive pedagogical arrangements from Finnish schools
2018
The idea and concept of inclusive education have been debated, and different interpretations of what inclusion means and to whom it concerns have been presented. In this paper, we bring together notions of inclusive quality education, pedagogy, learning and teachers, and illustrate how the principle(s) of inclusion(s) has been enacted and translated into classroom practices in Finnish context. Drawing from Finnish teachers’ narratives, we highlight successful, small-scale and creative pedagogical arrangements and teachers’ sensitivity to recognize and commit to responding to the needs of diverse learners. Our argumentation is rooted in the capabilities approach. We carry out an evaluative e…
Diagnostinen arviointi suomen kielen ja kirjallisuuden pedagogiikan opintojakson opiskelua ja opetusta ohjaamassa
2023
The article deals with diagnostic assessment conducted in the Finnish language and literature course for classroom teacher students. The research context was a hybrid learning environment, where the students evaluated both their linguistic and pedagogical competence using a self-assessment tool. The research questions were 1) what kind of linguistic competence the students showed in the beginning of the course, 2) how the results of linguistic competence and self-assessment were related, and 3) how the final grade of Finnish language and literature and the matriculation examination test of Finnish predicted the results of a diagnostic test. The data of the pilot research consisted of the re…
