Renal haemodynamics and coronary atherosclerotic burden are associated in patients with hypertension and mild coronary artery disease

2019

Intrarenal hemodynamic alterations are independent predictors of cardiovascular events in different populations. It has been hypothesized that there is an association between renal hemodynamics and coronary atherosclerotic burden in patients with hypertension. Therefore, the present study examined the associations between renal hemodynamics, coronary atherosclerotic burden and carotid atherosclerotic disease. A total of 130 patients with hypertension aged between 30-80 years who had been referred for an elective coronary angiography were enrolled in the present study. A duplex ultrasound of the intrarenal vasculature was performed to evaluate the resistive index (RI), pulsatility index (PI)…

Identification of clinical phenotypes and related survival in patients with large hccs

2021

Background. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) factors, especially maximum tumor diameter (MTD), tumor multifocality, portal vein thrombosis (PVT), and serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), influence survival. Aim. To examine patterns of tumor factors in large HCC patients. Methods. A database of large HCC patients was examined. Results. A multiple Cox proportional hazard model on death identified low serum albumin levels and the presence of PVT and multifocality, with each having a hazard ratio ≥2.0. All combinations of these three parameters were examined in relation to survival. Using univariate Cox analysis, the combination of albumin &gt

The calm before the storm: a report from the International Liver Cancer Association Congress 2015 – part 2

2016

International Liver Cancer Association Congress 2015, Paris, France, 4–6 September 2015 Since its creation 9 years ago, in 2007, the International Liver Cancer Association has focused on the multidisciplinary approach to liver cancer due to advances in hepatology science and care worldwide. In its 2015 annual conference, held on 4–6 September in Paris, France, the most recent progresses in the basic biology, management and treatment of liver cancer have been presented. This report, divided into two parts, introduces and critically reviews some of the most intriguing topics discussed at the meeting.

Abstract 2810: Pterostilbene, a natural phytoalexin, weakens the antioxidant defenses of aggressive cancer cells in vivo: a pituitary gland- and Nrf2…

2016

Abstract Polyphenolic phytochemicals have anticancer properties. However, in mechanistic studies lack of correlation to the bioavailable concentrations is a critical issue. We studied the underlying mechanisms using different human melanomas (A2058, MeWo and MelJuso) and pancreatic cancers (AsPC-1 and BxPC-3) (with genetic backgrounds correlating with most tumors in patients), growing in nude mice as xenografts, and pterostilbene (Pter, 3’,5’-dimethoxy-4-stilbenol; abundant in e.g. blueberries and a natural dimethoxylated analog of resveratrol). RESULTS: Intravenous administration of Pter decreased human melanoma and pancreatic cancer growth (an effect associated with lower rates of tumor c…

Cumulative visual impact of two coagulability disorders: A case report.

2020

Cumulative visual impact of two coagulability disorders were reviewed by presenting a case of a young female patient with a spontaneous abortion and two thromboembolic events in 8 years, whose visual function was severely affected. The particularities of her genetic constellation regarding the retinal circulation are also discussed. The patient developed a central retinal artery occlusion in the right eye during pregnancy in 2010, which led to an extended hematological workup that revealed presence of MTHFR C677T and MTHFR A1298C heterozygote mutations. The screening for myeloproliferative disorders showed JAK2 V617F gene mutation. Test results confirmed the diagnosis of thrombophilia and e…

Ligand-dependent Hedgehog pathway activation in Rhabdomyosarcoma : the oncogenic role of the ligands

2017

Altres ajuts: This work was supported by grants from Institut Català d'Oncologia (ICO), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (RTICC-RD12/0036/0016, /0020, /0035, /0057; and PI14/00647), Fundació A BOSCH, Fundació Amics Joan Petit, ajuts predoctorals del VHIR and RIS3CAT grants COMRDI15-1-0014 (ACCIÓ and FEDER). Altres ajuts: FEDER/COMRDI15-1-0014 Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma in children. The Hedgehog (HH) pathway is known to develop an oncogenic role in RMS. However, the molecular mechanism that drives activation of the pathway in RMS is not well understood. The expression of HH ligands was studied by qPCR, western blot and immunohistochemistry. Epigenetic Regulation of TRAIL Signaling: Implication for Cancer Therapy

2019

International audience; One of the main characteristics of carcinogenesis relies on genetic alterations in DNA and epigenetic changes in histone and non-histone proteins. At the chromatin level, gene expression is tightly controlled by DNA methyl transferases, histone acetyltransferases (HATs), histone deacetylases (HDACs), and acetyl-binding proteins. In particular, the expression level and function of several tumor suppressor genes, or oncogenes such as c-Myc, p53 or TRAIL, have been found to be regulated by acetylation. For example, HATs are a group of enzymes, which are responsible for the acetylation of histone proteins, resulting in chromatin relaxation and transcriptional activation,…

Familial hypercholesterolemia: The Italian Atherosclerosis Society Network (LIPIGEN)

2017

Background and aims: Primary dyslipidemias are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by abnormal levels of circulating lipoproteins. Among them, familial hypercholesterolemia is the most common lipid disorder that predisposes for premature cardiovascular disease. We set up an Italian nationwide network aimed at facilitating the clinical and genetic diagnosis of genetic dyslipidemias named LIPIGEN (LIpid TransPort Disorders Italian GEnetic Network). Methods: Observational, multicenter, retrospective and prospective study involving about 40 Italian clinical centers. Genetic testing of the appropriate candidate genes at one of six molecular diagnostic laboratories serving as nationw…
