Lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia. A new technique for treatment with botulinum toxin guided by electromyography and arthroscopy

Lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia is characterized by mandibular displacement towards the opposite side of the affected muscle. It may be associated with functional disorders affecting speech, swallowing, chewing and facial symmetry. Injection with botulinum toxin is recognized as the most effective treatment. Locating the lower head of the lateral pterygoid muscle for the injection is not difficult using electromyographic guidance; however, location of the upper head is more complicated, even with electromyography. We report a case of lateral pterygoid muscle dystonia in which precise injection of the upper head was achieved with the aid of arthroscopy.

Carbon nanotubes as electrodes for dielectrophoresis of DNA

Dielectrophoresis can potentially be used as an efficient trapping tool in the fabrication of molecular devices. For nanoscale objects, however, the Brownian motion poses a challenge. We show that the use of carbon nanotube electrodes makes it possible to apply relatively low trapping voltages and still achieve high enough field gradients for trapping nanoscale objects, e.g., single molecules. We compare the efficiency and other characteristics of dielectrophoresis between carbon nanotube electrodes and lithographically fabricated metallic electrodes, in the case of trapping nanoscale DNA molecules. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tarkastella musiikin vaikutusta katsojan tulkintaan ja odotusten syntymiseen elokuvan Funny Games (1997) avauskohtauksen kautta. Kohtauksessa soiva musiikki on nähty kuvastavan elokuvan yleistä tunnelmaa ja juonta erittäin hyvin ja tämän vuoksi musiikin on nähty viestivän katsojalle sisällöltään epämukavasta elokuvasta. Tutkimusta varten haastateltiin yhteensä kolmea yliopisto-opiskelijaa, jotka katsoivat lyhyen ja pitkän version kohtauksesta ja sen pohjalta kertoivat näkemyksistään elokuvan jatkosta ja kohtauksen sisällöstä. Suomalaisen yhteiskunnan vanheneminen ja suurten ikäluokkien siirtyminen eläkkeelle ja kolmanteen ikään nostaa esille kysymyksiä, miten vastattaisiin tulevaisuuden palvelujen tarpeisiin ja miten palvelujärjestelmää olisi kehitettävä. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on selvittää 60- ja 65-vuotiaiden ikääntyvien elämänhallintaa ja nykyistä sekä tulevaa tuen tarvetta. Elämänhallinnan viitekehyksenä on Antonovskyn koherenssiteoria, jossa elämänhallinta rakentuu merkityksellisyydestä, hallinnantunteesta ja ymmärrettävyydestä. Abstract Marine organisms are highly sensitive to many environmental stresses, and consequently, the analysis of their bio-molecular responses to different stress agents is very important for the understanding of putative repair mechanisms. Sea urchin embryos represent a simple though significant model system to test how specific stress can simultaneously affect development and protein expression. In the marine environment increasing concentrations of bio-available compounds often result from anthropogenic activities. Among metal ions, manganese represents a new emergent factor in environmental contamination. Here, we studied the effects of manganese on Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryos using biological and biochemical approaches for the analysis of impact on development, tissue accumulation and stress markers. Summary In the present paper we applied confocal microscopy andfluorescence technologies for studying the distribution andthe oxidative activity of sea urchin ( Paracentrotus lividus )mitochondria during development, by in vivo incubating eggsand embryos with cell-permeant MitoTracker probes. Wecalculated, by a mathematical model, the intensity values, the variations of intensity, and the variation index of incorporatedfluorochromes.
