Non-helpful relationships with professionals – a literature review of the perspective of persons with severe mental illness*

2015

The relationship with professionals has proved to be important with regard to outcome for persons with severe mental illness (SMI). The understanding of non-helpful relationships is important complementary knowledge to that regarding helpful relationships. To review the available qualitative research providing knowledge of non-helpful relationships from the perspective of persons with SMI.A review of qualitative studies, based on an earlier systematic search, analyzed through thematic analysis. The main themes were "non-helpful professionals", "organization versus relation" and "the consequences of non-helpful relationships with professionals". Examples of professionals described as non-helpf…

Efficacy of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) with depressed breast cancer patients: results of a randomized controlled multicenter trial.

2014

BACKGROUND There is a lack of trials of psychodynamic treatments of depression in breast cancer patients. The purpose of this trial was to determine the efficacy of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) in non-metastatic breast cancer patients diagnosed with depression, one of the most frequent mental comorbidities of breast cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS In a multicenter prospective trial, 157 breast cancer patients with comorbid depression were randomized to either individual STPP (intervention group, N=78) or 'treatment as usual' (control group, TAU, N=79). As our primary outcome measure, we hypothesized a higher rate of remission defined as no diagnosis of depression (Structured C…

Comparison of concomitant outcome achieved with fresh and cryopreserved donor oocytes vitrified by the Cryotop method

2008

Objective To evaluate the outcome of oocyte vitrification using the Cryotop method, observed in an egg donation program by simultaneously evaluating embryos derived from vitrified and fresh oocytes coming from the same stimulated cycle. Design Cohort prospective randomized study. Setting Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad (IVI) Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) Thirty oocyte donors and 30 recipients with informed consents. Intervention(s) Vitrification by the Cryotop method. Warming 1 hour after vitrification. Microinjection of surviving MII and fresh oocytes, evaluation of fertilization, embryo development, and clinical results. Main Outcome Measure(s) Survival, fertilization, and cleavage rat…

Clinical validation of embryo culture and selection by morphokinetic analysis: a randomized, controlled trial of the EmbryoScope.

2014

Objective To determine whether incubation in the integrated EmbryoScope time-lapse monitoring system (TMS) and selection supported by the use of a multivariable morphokinetic model improve reproductive outcomes in comparison with incubation in a standard incubator (SI) embryo culture and selection based exclusively on morphology. Design Prospective, randomized, double-blinded, controlled study. Setting University-affiliated private in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic. Patient(s) Eight hundred forty-three infertile couples undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Intervention(s) No patient intervention; embryos cultured in SI with development evaluated only by morphology (control …

Maternal coffee drinking in pregnancy and risk of small for gestational age birth

2005

Objective: We have analysed the association between coffee drinking before and during the three trimesters of pregnancy and risk of small for gestational age (SGA) birth. Methods: Cases were 555 women who delivered SGA births (ie <10th percentile according Italian standard). The controls included 1966 women who gave birth at term (≥37 weeks of gestation) to healthy infants of normal weight. Results: In comparison with nondrinkers, the ORs for SGA birth were 1.3 (95% confidence interval, CI, 0.9–1.9) for consumption of four or more cups of coffee/day before pregnancy, and 1.2 (95% CI 0.8–1.8), 1.2 (95% CI 0.8–1.8) and 0.9 (95% CI 0.6–1.4) for consumption of three or more cups of coffee/day d…

Staged Reconstruction of Pelvic Ring Disruption: Differences in Morbidity, Mortality, Radiologic Results, and Functional Outcomes Between B1, B2/B3, …

2002

To analyze injury pattern, surgical therapy, radiologic results, and functional outcome in unstable B-type and C-type pelvic ring fractures.Retrospective study.Level I University Trauma Center.Two-hundred-twenty-two consecutive patients, admitted during a nine-year period with unstable B-type (n = 100) and C-type (n = 122) pelvic ring injuries, of whom 122 (61.3 percent of surviving patients) were eligible for evaluation with a minimum follow-up of one year.Staged reconstruction dependent upon injury pattern. Emergency external compression of the pelvic ring in case of hemodynamic instability. Management of associated lesions. Secondary open reduction and internal fracture fixation.Assessme…

Multi-domain impact of elosufase alfa in Morquio A syndrome in the pivotal phase III trial

2015

Objective: To report and discuss the multi-domain impact of elosulfase alfa, with focus on tertiary and composite endpoints, in the 24-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial in patients with Morquio A syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis IVA). Methods: Patients with Morquio A syndrome >= 5 aged years were randomized 1:1:1 to elosulfase alfa 2.0 mg/kg/week (qw; N = 58), elosulfase alfa 2.0 mg/kg/every other week (qow; N = 59), or placebo (N = 59) for 24 weeks. Primary and secondary efficacy measures were 6-minute walk test (6MWT; primary), 3-minute stair climb test (3-MSCT) and urinary keratan sulfate (KS). Safety was also evaluated. Tertiary efficacy measures included r…

Tuberous Breast

2017

Background Tuberous breast (TB) is a rare congenital deformity, which may appear in different clinical forms representing various degrees of a single pathological entity. The worst cases are characterized by severe hypoplasia. Following a detailed analysis of the available relevant literature and a significant number of treated cases, in this article, the authors propose a new classification, with the aim of summarizing and simplifying a more intuitive categorization of the malformation, considering all the clinical aspects and including all types of TBs, even the minor ones, thus allowing a more immediate diagnosis and surgical planning. Methods Between September 2006 and December 2015, 78…

Azathioprine combined with prednisolone or monotherapy with prednisolone in active Crohn's disease

1993

Abstract Background: The role of azathioprine (AZA) in the treatment of active Crohn's disease (CD) is still controversial. This study examined whether AZA combined with standard prednisolone therapy improved the therapeutic outcome compared with monotherapy with prednisolone. Methods: Forty-two patients with a Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) of > 150 were randomized into two groups. Both received 60 mg of prednisolone daily in a tapering regimen to a maintenance dose of 10 mg. In addition, group 1 received 2.5 mg AZA/kg body wt and group 2 received a placebo over the whole study period of 4 months. Results: At the end of the trial, 16 of 21 patients (76%) in group 1 were in remission…

Effect of radiosynoviorthesis on the progression of arthropathy and haemarthrosis reduction in haemophilic patients.

2017

IntroductionRepeated haemarthrosis is widely accepted as the triggering cause of synovitis and haemophilic arthropathy. A first-line treatment of chronic synovitis is radiosynoviorthesis (RS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the RS effects on the progression of arthropathy and on a reduction in bleeding in patients with haemophilia. MethodsAn observational-retrospective study was performed. Bleeding episodes in the 12months following and in the 12months preceding RS was compared. The arthropathy was clinically and radiologically analysed by age range, joint and subject, comparing those undergoing RS (Radiosynoviorthesis Group, RSG) against those not undergoing this treatment (Non-Radi…
