Statistical sensitivity of the nEDM apparatus at PSI to n − n′ oscillations

2018

The neutron and its hypothetical mirror counterpart, a sterile state degenerate in mass, could spontaneously mix in a process much faster than the neutron β-decay. Two groups have performed a series of experiments in search of neutron – mirror-neutron (n − n′) oscillations. They reported no evidence, thereby setting stringent limits on the oscillation time τnn′. Later, these data sets have been further analyzed by Berezhiani et al.(2009–2017), and signals, compatible with n − n′ oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic fields, have been reported. The Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Collaboration based at the Paul Scherrer Institute performed a new series of experiments to further test…

Asymptotic normalization coefficients and continuum coupling in mirror nuclei

2012

Background: An asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) characterizes the asymptotic form of a one-nucleon overlap integral required for description of nucleon-removal reactions. Purpose: We investigate the impact of the particle continuum on proton and neutron ANCs for mirror systems from $p$- and $sd$-shell regions. Method: We use the real-energy and complex-energy continuum shell model approaches. Results: We studied the general structure of the single-particle ANCs as a function of the binding energy and orbital angular momentum. We computed ANCs in mirror nuclei for different physical situations, including capture reactions to weakly-bound and unbound states. Conclusions: We demonstr…

Compliance to ventilatory treatment in a cohort of patients on home CPAP or NIV: analysis by diagnosis, treatment type, and comorbidities

2019

Background: Patients on home continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV) show large variability in compliance to treatment. Aim: To identify predictors of poor compliance, we evaluated compliance to treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), and OSA-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome. Methods: We analyzed clinical and compliance data provided by a single home care provider, in 602 patients (n=442 OSA, males (M) 308; 38 OHS M=15, and 122 overlap M=111) on home CPAP/NIV in the province of Agrigento, Italy, after one year of treatment. The following variables were considered: age, …

Network Overlap and Network Blurring in Online Social Networks

2016

Online communities and the online social networks embedded become a prominent medium for social interactions. The success of social media depends on users’ willingness to continue investing their time and efforts in the absence of economic rewards, making psychological attachment critical to online communities. While prior studies identify that members do develop psychological commitment to online communities, why and how the commitment arises remain underexplored. This study focuses on the relationship between network overlap, a common feature of online social networks, and affective commitment to an online community. Drawing on the commitment theory and social network boundary theory, w…

Identifying Influential Nodes: The Overlapping Modularity Vitality Framework

2023

This paper proposes an Overlapping Modularity Vitality framework for identifying influential nodes in networks with overlapping community structures. The framework uses a generalized modularity equation and the concept of vitality to calculate the centrality of a node. We investigate three definitions of overlapping modularity and three ranking strategies prioritizing hubs, bridges, or both types of nodes. Experimental investigations involving real-world networks show that the proposed framework demonstrates the benefit of incorporating overlapping community structure information to identify critical nodes in a network.

CAT in COPD phenotypes (POPE study)

2016

Background: The COPD assessment test (CAT) is widely used for basic symptom evaluation in patients with COPD. The impact of COPD phenotypes on symptom scores using the CAT, however, remains largely unknown. Methods: The POPE-Study (NCT02119494) is an international, multicentre, observational cross-sectional survey of consecutive patients with COPD in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Respiratory symptoms using the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnoea scale, and the CAT were recorded. Inclusion criteria: age ≥ 40 years, smoking history ≥ 10 pack-years, post-bronchodilator (BD) FEV1/FVC Results: 3366 COPD subjects (66 ± 8.8 yrs, post-BD FEV1 52.8 ± 18.5 % predicted, CAT 17.4 ± 7.…

LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACT: Phenotypes of COPD in central and Eastern Europe - The POPE study

2015

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents a major health problem in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. However, data regarding symptom load and clinical phenotypes of patients with COPD in CEE remain largely unknown. Methods: Participation in the POPE Study (a multicentre, observational cross-sectional survey) was offered to consecutive outpatients with stable COPD in 11 CEE countries if they fulfilled the following criteria: age ≥ 40 years, smoking history ≥ 10 pack-years, post-bronchodilator (BD) FEV 1 /FVC Results: 3504 patients (66 ± 8.7 yrs, 69% male, post-BD FEV 1 53.0 ± 17.5% predicted, Charlson comorbidity index 2.0 ± 1.4, and 1.2 ± 1.6 exacerb…

A "Swedish" actuarial balance sheet for a notional defined contribution pension scheme with disability and retirement benefits

2016

This paper proposes a “Swedish” type actuarial balance sheet for a notional defined contribution scheme embedding disability insurance within the retirement pension system. The underlying framework supporting the actuarial balance relies on a multistate overlapping generations model that includes the so-called survivor dividend and a minimum pension benefit for both contingencies. The proposed ABS splits the system into two parts: the actuarial part (pure NDC) and the redistributive part, which includes the assets and liabilities originating from non-contributory rights. The paper also contains a numerical example that sheds light on the real applicability of our proposal and confirms that …

Is Martha Nussbaum really political liberal?

2008

This paper puts under scrutiny Martha Nussbaum’s turn to political liberalism. Unlike Rawls, she seems to assume that overlapping consensus works even within societies without democratic constitutions. Though, this sort of consensus is doomed to be unstable, since there is not a previous constitutional consensus, as Rawls requires. Unlike Rawls’ constructivist theory, her conception of political liberalism is more akin to forms of moral objectivism. Moreover, her allegation of gender discrimination towards institutions that let only men run for certain jobs (such as presidency of certain catholic universities) is based on a clear cut distinction between public and private sphere. However, “…
