Abstract The Ciona intestinalis inflammatory response to several irritants appears to be composed of a complex reaction set. The cellular reactions in the tunic involve hemocyte infiltration, hemocyte and epidermis activities, vacuolization, and cell disruption, while cell products can contribute to form capsule components and/or cause a tunic wound. Abstract Cytotoxic effects of aldicarb, its sulfone and sulfoxide, and propoxur, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant parameters in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO-K1) cells were determined. d , l -buthionine-( S , R )-sulfoximine (BSO) was assayed to determine the role of GSH in the protection against carbamate cytotoxicity. Pre-treatment with 60 μM BSO, induced a significant decrease in the glutathione reductase (GR; 64–141%), the glutathione peroxidase (GPx; 10–30%) and the glutathione S-transferase (GST; 59–93%) activities, and its GSH levels (79–85%), while the oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels significantly increased (64–78%) respect to experiment non-BSO-pretreated. Abstract The effect of four carbamates, aldicarb and its metabolites (aldicarb sulfone and aldicarb sulfoxide) and propoxur on glutathione content and the activity of the enzymes involved in the sulfur-redox cycle in the mammalian cellular model CHO-K1 cells after 24-h exposure were determined. Carbamate exposure resulted in a depletion of intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH) content, no change was observed in oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and a decrease in GSH/GSSG ratio was detected. After carbamates exposition a GSH/GSSG decreases in ranged from 12.44% to 21.35% of control was observed. In this study, a 2.1-fold Apolipophorin-III mRNA up-regulation was found in Tribolium castaneum larvae challenged with Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Ba spore-crystal mixture. Knockdown of Apolipophorin-III by RNAi resulted in increased T. castaneum larvae susceptibility following Cry3Ba spore-crystal treatment, demonstrating Apolipophorin-III involvement in insect defense against B. thuringiensis. The projections of the septum of the lizard Podarcis hispanica (Lacertidae) were studied by combining retrograde and anterograde neuroanatomical tracing. The results confirm the classification of septal nuclei into three main divisions. Leaves of paprika pepper (Capsicum annuum L., cv Negral) plants sprayed with Ti(IV)-ascorbate showed an important increase of iron and titanium concentrations, as well as of the activity of peroxidase and catalase enzymatic systems. Leaf-Ti increase is similar for both greenhouse and field crop experiments, but increases in leaf Fe are more marked in plants growing under field conditions.

Avarol is a marine sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone with interesting pharmacological properties including anti-inflammatory and antipsoriatic effects. In the present study we evaluated the pharmacological effect of avarol on some inflammatory parameters related to the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Avarol inhibited tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) generation in stimulated human monocytes (IC(50) 1 microM) and TNF-alpha-induced activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB)-DNA binding in keratinocytes. Comparison of the degradation mechanisms of diclofenac in the presence of iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine and myeloperoxidase

The degradation process of diclofenac (DCF) by hematoprotein myeloperoxidase (MPO) and iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine (FePcOC) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was compared. During the oxidation of diclofenac, in the presence of iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine (FePcOC) and hydroxyl radicals (HO•) (from H2O2), an intermediate product (dimer with an m/z value of 587) with the characteristic yellow colouration and an intense band at λmax = 451 nm is formed. Iron octacarboxyphthalocyanine oxidises in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, following the first-order reaction kinetics for FePcOC and H2O2.
