4-hydroxynonenal inhibits glutathione peroxidase: protection by glutathione

1999

Abstract 4-Hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal, a lipid peroxidation product, inhibits glutathione peroxidase in a concentration-dependent manner. The concentration providing 50% inhibition is 0.12 mM. This inhibition can be almost completely (89%) prevented by 1 mM glutathione added to the incubation mixture 30 min before 4-hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal or 2,3-trans-nonenal, but not by other thiol-containing antioxidants such as 0.5 mM dithiothreitol or β-mercaptoethanol. Again the addition of 1 mM glutathione, and not of 0.5 mM dithiothreitol or β-mercaptoethanol, to the enzyme 30 min after incubation with 4-hydroxy-2,3-trans-nonenal restores activity to the same extent as does the preincubation with G…

Anaerobic Palladium-Catalyzed Chemoselective Oxidation of Allylic and Benzylic Alcohols with α-Bromo Sulfoxide as a Co-Oxidant.

2007

A chemoselective palladium-catalyzed anaerobic oxidation of allylic and benzylic alcohols using an α-bromo sulfoxide as a co-oxidant is described for the first time. The catalyst system is simple and has a long life because of the allowance of phosphane ligands under the non-aerobic conditions. The advantages of the described method include no overoxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids because of the mild conditions applied, the tolerance of oxygen-sensitive functionalities such as a carbon-carbon double bond, an organothio group, or a diorganoamino group and the effective preparation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, resulting from the oxidation of primary and secondary …

Anatase photocatalyst with supported low crystalline TiO2: The influence of amorphous phase on the activity

2018

Abstract In a previous study on commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (J. Soria et al.) we had shown that the superficial disordered layers influence their textural and reactivity features. In the present work we used well crystallized anatase particles (commercial TiO2, BDH) as support of different amounts of titania powders, prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis and constituted by nanocrystals diluted into an amorphous matrix. The reactivity of these photocatalysts has been tested for the selective oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol to aldehyde in aqueous suspension. The catalyst characteristics have been studied using adsorption-desorption isotherms, TEM, HRTEM, TGA, PL, DRIFT-IR, and 1H MAS-NMR spectr…

Determination of the lowest-energy oxidation site in nucleotides: 2'-deoxythymidine 5'-monophosphate anion.

2006

High level ab initio computations anticipate nucleobases as the most favorable sites for oxidation in nucleotides. At the CASPT2 level, the lowest ionization channel for the 2'-deoxythymidine 5'-monophosphate anion is related to a pi-orbital of the thymine base. The present findings lead to revision of the recent assignments of the photodetachment photoelectron spectra of mononucleotide anions in the gas phase and support the classical view of the nucleobase being the main actor in the oxidation process of both nucleosides and nucleotides.

[39] Lipoperoxyl radical-scavenging activity of vitamin A and analogs in homogeneous solution

1994

Publisher Summary This chapter describes the assay method for determining the reactivity of all- trans -retinol and other natural and synthetic retinoids, with radicals generated by reaction of the lipid-soluble azo initiator 2,2 ' -azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (AMVN) with methyl linoleate. The chapter discusses the general principles for measuring antioxidant activity. The oxidation of linoleic acid methyl ester (LAME) is the simplest model for studying the oxidation of polyunsaturated lipids and has been widely adopted to evaluate antioxidant activity. Because linoleic acid has two double bonds, peroxidation occurs at the bisallylic hydrogens and generates conjugated diene hydroperox…

Antioxidant properties, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase activities in HepG2 cells with a fungal endophyte producing apigenin from pige…

2012

Abstract A fungal endophyte MD89 with obvious antioxidant activities was isolated from pigeon pea and identified as Chaetomium globosum by ITS sequence. Different fractions from MD89 culture were compared and evaluated by total phenol (TP) content, total flavonoid (TFL) content, DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power and lipid peroxidation assays, respectively. Results showed that EtOAc extracts had high content of TP and TFL, and strong antioxidant activities (IC 50 value was 6.87, 15.19, 16.78 μg/mL, respectively). Furthermore, the EtOAc extracts were analyzed by LC–MS/MS and a good antioxidant compound, apigenin, was found. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione re…

Speciation of the oxidation states of plutonium in aqueous solutions by UV/Vis spectroscopy, CE-ICP-MS and CE-RIMS

2007

For the speciation of the plutonium oxidation states in aqueous solutions, the online coupling of capillary electrophoresis (CE) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been developed. Depending on the radius/electrical charge ratio, the oxidation states III, IV, V, and VI of plutonium are separated by CE, based on the different migration times through the capillary and are detected by ICP-MS. The detection limit is 20 ppb,i.e.109–1010atoms (10-12–10-13g) for one oxidation state with an uncertainty of the reproducibility of the migration times of ≤1% and ≤5% for the peak area. The redox kinetics of the different plutonium oxidation states in the presence of humic subs…
