Apoptotic-like Leishmania exploit the host´s autophagy machinery to reduce T-cell-mediated parasite elimination

Apoptosis is a well-defined cellular process in which a cell dies, characterized by cell shrinkage and DNA fragmentation. In parasites like Leishmania, the process of apoptosis-like cell death has been described. Moreover upon infection, the apoptotic-like population is essential for disease development, in part by silencing host phagocytes. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of how apoptosis in unicellular organisms may support infectivity remains unclear. Background: Na+/H+ exchanger-1 (NHE-1) is involved in pH regulation and is up-regulated in different malignancies. Activation of NHE-1 is one way for allowing cells to avoid intracellular acidification and protect them against apoptosis. Inhibitors of NHE-1 are able to decrease intracellular pH and induce apoptosis. Some statins can also act by partial inhibition of NHE-1. Low-weight carboxylic acids as potential risk factor of compost phytotoxicity

Being intermediates of organic matter degradation, low-weight carboxylic acids (LWCA) can occur at phytotoxic concentrations on bioactive soils or in the processed organic material applied to soil. While toxicity potentials and mixture effects of LWCA are still poorly known, the potential phytotoxicity of the biomaterials is difficult to assess. In the study effective concentrations (EC) of formic, acetic and propionic acids at non adjusted pH were obtained in short-term germination assays (48 h for cress, Lepidium sativum, and 120 h for ryegrass Lolium multiflorum) and subchronic growth assays (21d). Machine Learning for Predicting Chemical Potentials of Multifunctional Organic Compounds in Atmospherically Relevant Solutions

We have trained the Extreme Minimum Learning Machine (EMLM) machine learning model to predict chemical potentials of individual conformers of multifunctional organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The model is able to predict chemical potentials of molecules that are in the size range of the training data with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.5 kcal/mol. There is also a linear correlation between calculated and predicted chemical potentials of molecules that are larger than those included in the training set.
