Association between maxillary and mandibular apical base lengths and severity of dental crowding or spacing in Class II malocclusion subjects: An

2018

Background Anterior crowding/ spacing are one of the major problems that inspire patients to undergo orthodontic treatment. Several factors associated with anterior crowding/ spacing includes arch width and length, mesio-distal tooth diameter and proportions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship of maxillary and mandibular base lengths to the amount of anterior dental crowding/ spacing in patients with complete class II malocclusions. Material and methods A retrospective study was done with 152 patients who were divided into four groups according to the severity of pre-treatment dental crowding/spacing present in the mandibular arch. Measurements were performed on t…

Craniofacial Signs, Symptoms and Orthodontic Objectives of Paediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

2019

The study of craniofacial growth and development has a long history in the disciplines of Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. Unbalanced facial growth is known to be causative for dental misalignment and malocclusion. However, historically, little emphasis has been placed on the possible link to obstructive sleep apnoea. Through greater understanding from contemporary studies and reflections from past research, we now are bringing to light the interrelationships of all proximal structures in the many chronic issues that ail our children.

Adverse effects of lingual and buccal orthodontic techniques: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2016

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the prevalence of adverse effects associated with lingual and buccal fixed orthodontic techniques. METHODS: Two authors searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and LILACS databases up to October 2014. Agreement between the authors was quantified by the Cohen kappa statistic. The following variables were analyzed: pain, caries, eating and speech difficulties, and oral hygiene. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess risk of bias in nonrandomized studies, and the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias was used for randomized controlled trials. RESULTS: Eight articles were included in this systematic r…

Dental implants placement in paranoid squizofrenic patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A case report

2017

Background Paranoid schizophrenia is a mental illness that involves no observable anatomical alteration. Main characteristic affects the personality of the individual, as well as areas of his own psychology. Case report A 33-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder in treatment with Haloperidol, Oxcarbazepine, Olanzapine and Seroquel is presented. Dental exploration showed widespread decay mostly cervical with numerous root fragments, agenesis of lateral incisors, impacted wisdom teeth, missing teeth and malocclusion. Treatment plan included restoration of teeth decay, extractions of root fragments and implant-supported prostheses in bilateral upper lateral…

Infarct Size Measurement by Triphenyltetrazolium Chloride StainingVersus In VivoInjection of Propidium Iodide

1997

Infarct size delineation by triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining is dependent on sufficient reperfusion. We therefore evaluated the possibility of using propidium iodide (PI), a reagent conventionally used in flow cytometry to fluorescently stain dead cells, for infarct size analysis after short periods of reperfusion. Forty-five rabbits were subjected to either 15 min, 2 h or 4.5 h of coronary artery occlusion without reperfusion, or to 15 min, 30 min and 2 h of coronary artery occlusion followed by 30 min, 1 h and 3 h of reperfusion. Fifteen min before terminating the experiment, PI was injected into the left atrium. Patent blue violet was used to delineate the area at risk. Follo…

Perspectives in Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation: Review of the Conference of the German Society for Clinical Microcirculation and Hemorheo…

2011

During the 29th conference of the German Society for Clinical Microcirculation and Hemorheology – held in the Freie Universitat Berlin a broad range of different topics of experimental and clinical studies in the field were presented. A special spotlight was dedicated to the Conference President’s (Prof. Dr. J. Plendl, Head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy) scientific area “Anatomical and Experimental Microcirculation” [5, 6, 9, 13]. Of special interest were the angiogenetic studies: Examinations of the influence of PDGF-BB on adipose-tissue derived stem cells and how these influence angiogenesis [9] and the angiogenesis and healing with non-shrinking, fast degradable PLGA/CaP scaffo…

Intracapillary HbO2 Saturation in Tumor Tissue of DS-Carcinosarcoma During Normoxia

1978

Investigations on solid tumor tissue have shown that O2 uptake by cancer cells depends largely on the supply conditions. The absence of sufficient neovascularization and a general rarefaction of the terminal vascular bed during tumor growth as well as reduced and inhcmogeneous blood flew due to vascular stasis in neoplastic tissue prevent normal functions of the terminal vascular bed. In some areas of the tumor circulating blood is not visible despite the intactness of vessels. Stasis occurs since lacuna-like, sinusoidal and cystiform blood vessels cannot be drained completely because ‘tissue-pressure’ due to continuous cell proliferation can prevent efficient circulation. Thrombosis follow…

Abstract: Vascular occlusion has multiple, diverse clinical manifestations, some of which can have grave consequences for patients. It also has a wide variety of causes, including thrombi, which we recently addressed in part I of this review. In this second part, we look at additional causes o…

Metabolomic Profile of Human Myocardial Ischemia by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of Peripheral Blood Serum

2012

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the metabolomic profile of acute myocardial ischemia (MIS) using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of peripheral blood serum of swine and patients undergoing angioplasty balloon‐induced transient coronary occlusion. Background Biochemical detection of MIS is a major challenge. The validation of novel biosignatures is of utmost importance. Methods High-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to profile 32 blood serum metabolites obtained (before and after controlled ischemia) from swine (n 9) and patients (n 20) undergoing transitory MIS in the setting of planned coronary angioplasty. Additionally, blood serum of c…

Correlation Between Ischemic Retinal Accidents and Radial Peripapillary Capillaries in the Optic Nerve Using Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiograph…

2017

Background: Perfusion of the optic nerve has been widely studied using fluorescein angiography (FAG), which is currently regarded as the criterion standard. However, FAG has adverse effects associated with intravenous contrast administration and is limited in its capacity to characterize and stratify the different vascular layers of the optic nerve and retina. The use of new imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomographic angiography (Angio-OCT), is therefore important. Aim: A qualitative description is made of the vascular layers of the optic nerve and of how vascular events affect radial peripapillary capillaries (RPC). Two patients with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), …
