Effect of uncertain damping coefficient on the response of a SDOF system
2022
In this paper, a full probabilistic description of the response of a randomized SDOF system in both the time and the frequency domain is done. Considering that the damping of the structure does not simply relate to any single physical phenomenon, the sensitivity of the response to the randomness of the damping parameter is investigated. The stochastic analysis is conducted via the Probability Transformation Method therefore the first probability density function of the response is evaluated. The effect of the uncertain damping coefficient on the response of the SDOF system has been investigated through several numerical examples. From the response probability density function as well as fro…
Probabilistic solution of a homogeneous linear second-order differential equation with randomized complex coefficients
2022
In this paper, an exact expression for the first probability density function of the solution stochastic process to a randomized homogeneous linear second-order complex differential equation is determined. To complete the probabilistic analysis, the first probability density functions of the real and complex contributions of the solution stochastic process are also calculated. To compute the densities, the random variable transformation method is applied under general hypothesis, all coefficients and initial conditions are absolutely continuous complex random variables. The capability of the theoretical results established is demonstrated by several numerical examples. Finally, we show the …
Stochastic response determination of nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivatives elements via the Wiener path integral
2014
A novel approximate analytical technique for determining the non-stationary response probability density function (PDF) of randomly excited linear and nonlinear oscillators endowed with fractional derivatives elements is developed. Specifically, the concept of the Wiener path integral in conjunction with a variational formulation is utilized to derive an approximate closed form solution for the system response non-stationary PDF. Notably, the determination of the non-stationary response PDF is accomplished without the need to advance the solution in short time steps as it is required by the existing alternative numerical path integral solution schemes which rely on a discrete version of the…
Fabric transitions from shell accumulations to reefs: an introduction with Palaeozoic examples
2007
One unresolved conceptual problem in some Palaeozoic sedimentary strata is the boundary between the concepts of ‘shell concentration’ and ‘reef’. In fact, numerous bioclastic strata are transitional coquina–reef deposits, because either distinct frame-building skeletons are not commonly preserved in growth position, or skeletal remains are episodically encrusted by ‘stabilizer’ (reef-like) organisms, such as calcareous and problematic algae, encrusting microbes, bryozoans, foraminifers and sponges. The term ‘parabiostrome’, coined by Kershaw, can be used to describe some stratiform bioclastic deposits formed through the growth and destruction, by fair-weather wave and storm wave action, of …
Cross-Sensor Adversarial Domain Adaptation of Landsat-8 and Proba-V images for Cloud Detection
2021
The number of Earth observation satellites carrying optical sensors with similar characteristics is constantly growing. Despite their similarities and the potential synergies among them, derived satellite products are often developed for each sensor independently. Differences in retrieved radiances lead to significant drops in accuracy, which hampers knowledge and information sharing across sensors. This is particularly harmful for machine learning algorithms, since gathering new ground truth data to train models for each sensor is costly and requires experienced manpower. In this work, we propose a domain adaptation transformation to reduce the statistical differences between images of two…
Seismically induced, non-stationary hydrodynamic pressure in a dam-reservoir system
2003
Stochastic seismic analysis of hydrodynamic pressure in a dam-reservoir system is presented in this paper. The analysis is conducted assuming infinite reservoir compressible fluid and modeling seismic acceleration as a normal zero-mean stochastic process obtained by Penzien filter. The non-homogeneous boundary conditions associated to the problem have been incorporated into the equation of pressure wave scattering in the form of a forcing function turning the non-homogeneous boundary value problem into an homogeneous one. Solution obtained via modal analysis in time-domain is coupled with the use of classical Ito stochastic differential calculus to characterize the stochastic hydrodynamic p…
Fluid–structure interaction of downwind sails: a new computational method
2018
The spreading of high computational resources at very low costs led, over the years, to develop new numerical approaches to simulate the fluid surrounding a sail and to investigate the fluidâstructure interaction. Most methods have concentrated on upwind sails, due to the difficulty of implementing downwind sailing configurations that present, usually, the problem of massive flow separation and large displacements of the sail under wind load. For these reasons, the problem of simulating the fluidâstructure interaction (FSI) on downwind sails is still subject of intensive investigation. In this paper, a new weak coupled procedure between a RANS solver and a FEM one has been implemented t…
A New Systematic Series of Foil Sections with Parallel Sides
2020
Parallel-sided foil sections are used for centerboards and rudders in sailing dinghy classes and also for struts placed in a fluid flow. The objective of this work is to create a systematic series of parallel-sided sections to be used under different conditions, with an emphasis on the sailing dinghies 470, 420 and Optimist. The loss, and surprisingly the gain, in performance relative to 4-digit NACA sections are also investigated. A 2D Reynolds-averaged Navier&ndash
Chinese OFDI in Europe under the Guidance of BRI — A Focus on China–CEE Economic Relations
2018
China has been actively integrating itself in the global economy through Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and increasing trade flows. In order to further expand its foreign market ambition and reinforce itself as a leader in the world economic system, China unleashed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). One of the main economic incentives behind this initiative is to strengthen China’s integration with Central and Eastern European (CEE) markets. In recent years, an emerging trend for Chinese investors to invest in CEE countries such as Poland can be observed. The aim of this research is to analyze the changing patterns and motives of Chinese Outbound FDI (OFDI) to Europe during the period of…
Multiplicative cases from additive cases: Extension of Kolmogorov–Feller equation to parametric Poisson white noise processes
2007
Abstract In this paper the response of nonlinear systems driven by parametric Poissonian white noise is examined. As is well known, the response sample function or the response statistics of a system driven by external white noise processes is completely defined. Starting from the system driven by external white noise processes, when an invertible nonlinear transformation is applied, the transformed system in the new state variable is driven by a parametric type excitation. So this latter artificial system may be used as a tool to find out the proper solution to solve systems driven by parametric white noises. In fact, solving this new system, being the nonlinear transformation invertible, …
