Identification of the inertial model for innovative semi-immergible USV (SI-USV) drone for marine and lakes operations

2015

The proposed project shows the results obtained in the implementation and testing in lacustrine and marine environment of a nautical remote controlled vehicle with surface navigation and innovative features Semi-Immergible (SI-USV). This vehicle is based on a pending patent belonging to Palermo University (Patent Pending RM2012A000209 and Patent RM2014Z000060) concerning innovative semi-immersible vehicles (SI-Drone), that can be remotely controlled from the ground, air, satellite and sea also during the semi-immersible operation. Given its low draft, the electric powered vehicle, coupled with jet propulsion, makes it possible to navigate in shallow waters, coastal shipping or sandbars.

Facilitating Elements for the Transmission of the Entrepreneurial Spirit in the Classroom

2014

There have been countless tests made to confirm that creativity is a critical skill for entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial training (Schmidt, J. et al. 2012), even more, practices on divergent thinking increases the entrepreneurial skills of students to generate a greater number and range of ideas, but not, their approaches to solve problems in a creative way. This situation raises a number of questions that should be analyzed before adding creativity and techniques to improve the training of creative thinking to studies (classes), about and in entrepreneurship, as a training channel, improvement or even to the generation of entrepreneurs. Our goal is to show that entrepreneurship is a…

Second-order hydrodynamic effects on the response of three semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines

2020

Abstract Floating structures have become the most feasible solution for supporting wind turbines when offshore wind project move to deeper water. In this paper, a hydrodynamic analysis of three different semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines is carried out including second-order hydrodynamic effects. The three examined platforms are V-shaped semisubmersible, Braceless semisubmersible and OC4-DeepCwind semisubmersible and are used to support the NREL 5 MW reference wind turbine. The main objective of the present study is to investigate and compare the hydrodynamic response of the three different semisubmersible floaters in two water depths (100 m, and 200 m) under different load co…

Remaining useful life estimation of HMPE rope during CBOS testing through machine learning

2021

Fibre rope used in cranes for offshore deployment and recovery has significant potential to perform lifts with smaller cranes and vessels to reach depths limited by weight of steel wire rope. Current condition monitoring methods based on manual inspection and time-based and reactive maintenance have significant potential for improvement coupled with more accurate remaining useful life (RUL) prediction. Machine learning has found use as a condition monitoring approach, coupled with vast improvements in data acquisition methods. This paper details data-driven RUL prediction methods based on machine learning algorithms applied on cyclic-bend-over-sheave (CBOS) tests performed on two fibre rope…

A shoreline boundary condition for a highly nonlinear Boussinesq model for breaking waves

2012

Abstract A physically based strategy was used to model swash zone hydrodynamics forced by breaking waves within a Boussinesq type of model. The position and the velocity of the shoreline were determined continuously in space by solving the physically-based equations of the shoreline motion; moreover, a fixed grid method, with a wet–dry interface, was adopted for integrating the Boussinesq model. The numerical stability of the model was improved by means of an extrapolation method. To validate the proposed methodology, the classical analytical solution for the shoreline motion of a monochromatic wave train over a plane beach was considered. The comparison between the analytical and numerical…

Yacht performance monitoring in real sailing conditions

2019

Abstract In this paper a multi-method approach is used to setup and validate a monitoring system applied to a small sailing boat during real sailing conditions. This monitoring system is able to transform the data coming from some typical devices installed on board into information about the deformed state of the boat. GPS, Wind Data Logger and cameras have been installed on the boat to measure its route and speed, the apparent wind velocity and direction and the positions of the crew members. These data are processed to determine the equilibrium of the boat and estimate the loads applied on it. Then, a CAD/FEM model calculates the effects of these loads on the boat shape. The resulting def…

Transient response of a TLP-type floating offshore wind turbine under tendon failure conditions

2021

Abstract Among various types of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), the tension leg platform (TLP) floating wind turbines have relatively small motions due to stiff tendons. Similar to TLP applications in the offshore industry, tendon failure may lead to deteriorated stability and large transient responses, which should be considered as part of accidental limit state (ALS) checks at the design stage of the TLP FOWTs. This paper takes the WindStar TLP system as a representative and investigates the transient effects of one-tendon failure on the system responses. A coupled numerical model is first established using the aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation tool FAST. Subsequent numerical s…

Effect of surface finish on the mechanical behaviour of Dacron© 360 woven

2013

Abstract In the present paper some experimental analyses of Dacron© 360 woven with and without surface treatment are presented to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the constitutive behaviour. This woven, widely adopted in sail manufacturing, is obtained by weaving polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn and it shows some peculiar features due to the manufacturing process. The experimental tensile tests, clearly show the orthotropy behaviour of the material. The effect of the treatment results in a stiffer behaviour especially along the warp and bias direction and in an increment of ultimate strength in all directions.

A shallow water SPH model with PML boundaries

2015

Abstract We focus on the study and implementation of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) numerical code to deal with non-reflecting boundary conditions, starting from the Perfect Matched Layer (PML) approach. Basically, the method exploits the concept of a physical damping which acts on a fictitious layer added to the edges of computational domain. In this paper, we develop the study of time dependent shallow waves propagating on a finite 2D-XY plane domain and their behavior in the presence of circular and, more generic, rectangular boundary absorbing layers. In particular, an analysis of variation of the layer׳s thickness versus the absorbing efficiency is conducted. In our model, the m…

Restraining approach for the spurious kinematic modes in hybrid equilibrium element

2013

The present paper proposes a rigorous approach for the elimination of spurious kinematic modes in hybrid equilibrium elements, for three well known mesh patches. The approach is based on the identification of the dependent equations in the set of inter-element and boundary equilibrium equations of the sides involved in the spurious kinematic mode. Then the kinematic variables related to the dependent equations are reciprocally constrained and, by application of master slave elimination method, the set of inter-element equilibrium equations is reduced to full rank. The elastic solutions produced by means of the proposed approach verify the homogeneous, the inter-element and the boundary equi…
