Multivariate nonparametric estimation of the Pickands dependence function using Bernstein polynomials
2017
Abstract Many applications in risk analysis require the estimation of the dependence among multivariate maxima, especially in environmental sciences. Such dependence can be described by the Pickands dependence function of the underlying extreme-value copula. Here, a nonparametric estimator is constructed as the sample equivalent of a multivariate extension of the madogram. Shape constraints on the family of Pickands dependence functions are taken into account by means of a representation in terms of Bernstein polynomials. The large-sample theory of the estimator is developed and its finite-sample performance is evaluated with a simulation study. The approach is illustrated with a dataset of…
Modeling Posidonia oceanica growth data: from linear to generalized linear mixed models
2010
The statistical analysis of annual growth of Posidonia oceanica is traditionally carried out through Gaussian linear models applied to untransformed, or log-transformed, data. In this paper, we claim that there are good reasons for re-considering this established practice, since real data on annual growth often violate the assumptions of Gaussian linear models, and show that the class of Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) represents a useful alternative for handling such violations. By analyzing Sicily PosiData-1, a real dataset on P. oceanica growth data gathered in the period 2000–2002 along the coasts of Sicily, we find that in the majority of cases Normality is rejected and the effect of …
Estimating growth charts via nonparametric quantile regression: a practical framework with application in ecology.
2013
We discuss a practical and effective framework to estimate reference growth charts via regression quantiles. Inequality constraints are used to ensure both monotonicity and non-crossing of the estimated quantile curves and penalized splines are employed to model the nonlinear growth patterns with respect to age. A companion R package is presented and relevant code discussed to favour spreading and application of the proposed methods.
A decision support system methodology for forecasting of time series based on soft computing
2006
Exponential procedures are widely used as forecasting techniques for inventory control and business planning. A number of modifications to the generalized exponential smoothing (Holt-Winters) approach to forecasting univariate time series is presented, which have been adapted into a tool for decision support systems. This methodology unifies the phases of estimation and model selection into just one optimization framework which permits the identification of robust solutions. This procedure may provide forecasts from different versions of exponential smoothing by fitting the updated formulas of Holt-Winters and selects the best method using a fuzzy multicriteria approach. The elements of the…
Steady-state dynamic response of various hysteretic systems endowed with fractional derivative elements
2019
In this paper, the steady-state dynamic response of hysteretic oscillators comprising fractional derivative elements and subjected to harmonic excitation is examined. Notably, this problem may arise in several circumstances, as for instance, when structures which inherently exhibit hysteretic behavior are supplemented with dampers or isolators often modeled by employing fractional terms. The amplitude of the steady-state response is determined analytically by using an equivalent linearization approach. The procedure yields an equivalent linear system with stiffness and damping coefficients which are related to the amplitude of the response, but also, to the order of the fractional derivativ…
Probabilistic response of linear structures equipped with nonlinear damper devices (PIS method)
2008
Passive control introducing energy absorbing devices into the structure has received considerable attention in recent years. Unfortunately the constitutive law of viscous fluid dampers is highly nonlinear, and even supposing that the structure behaves linearly, the whole system has inherent nonlinear properties. Usually the analysis is performed by a stochastic linearization technique (SLT) determining a linear system equivalent to the nonlinear one, in a statistical sense. In this paper the effect of the non-Gaussianity of the response due to the inherent nonlinearity of the damper device will be studied in detail via the Path Integral Solution (PIS) method. A systematic study is conducted…
Bioactive pyrrole alkaloids isolated from the Red Sea : marine sponge Stylissa carteri
2017
Abstract Fifteen pyrrole alkaloids were isolated from the Red Sea marine sponge Stylissa carteri and investigated for their biological activities. Four of them were dibrominated [(+) dibromophakelline, Z-3-bromohymenialdisine, (±) ageliferin and 3,4-dibromo-1H-pyrrole-2-carbamide], nine compounds were monobrominated [(−) clathramide C, agelongine, (+) manzacidin A, (−) 3-bromomanzacidin D, Z-spongiacidin D, Z-hymenialdisine, 2-debromostevensine, 2-bromoaldisine and 4-bromo-1H-pyrrole-2-carbamide)] and finally, two compounds were non-brominated derivatives viz., E-debromohymenialdisine and aldisine. The structure elucidations of isolated compounds were based on 1D & 2D NMR spectroscopic …
Ito and Stratonovich integrals for delta-correlated processes
1993
Abstract In this paper the generalization of the Itd and Stratonovich integrals for the case of non-linear systems excited by parametric delta-correlated processes is presented. This generalization gives a new light on the corrective coefficients in the stochastic differential equations driven by parametric delta-correlated processes. The full significance of these corrective terms is evidenced by means of some examples.
Spatio-temporal behaviour of the deep chlorophyll maximum in Mediterranean Sea: Development of a stochastic model for picophytoplankton dynamics
2013
In this paper, by using a stochastic reaction-diffusion-taxis model, we analyze the picophytoplankton dynamics in the basin of the Mediterranean Sea, characterized by poorly mixed waters. The model includes intraspecific competition of picophytoplankton for light and nutrients. The multiplicative noise sources present in the model account for random fluctuations of environmental variables. Phytoplankton distributions obtained from the model show a good agreement with experimental data sampled in two different sites of the Sicily Channel. The results could be extended to analyze data collected in different sites of the Mediterranean Sea and to devise predictive models for phytoplankton dynam…
Dynamics analysis of distributed parameter system subjected to a moving oscillator with random mass, velocity and acceleration
2002
Abstract The problem of calculating the response of a distributed parameter system excited by a moving oscillator with random mass, velocity and acceleration is investigated. The system response is a stochastic process although its characteristics are assumed to be deterministic. In this paper, the distributed parameter system is assumed as a beam with Bernoulli–Euler type analytical behaviour. By adopting the Galerkin's method, a set of approximate governing equations of motion possessing time-dependent uncertain coefficients and forcing function is obtained. The statistical characteristics of the deflection of the beam are computed by using an improved perturbation approach with respect t…
