Do Tengmalm's owls see vole scent marks visible in ultraviolet light?
1997
Scent markings (urine and faeces) of small mammals are visible in ultraviolet (UV) light. Diurnal kestrels, Falco tinnunculususe them as a cue to find areas of food abundance. We studied whether vole-eating, nocturnal Tengmalm's owls, Aegolius funereuscan see vole scent marks using UV-vision. In a laboratory experiment, 14 young (less than 6 months old) and 14 adult (more than 6 months old) owls were individually given a choice between four adjacent arenas: (1) an arena with vole urine and faeces in UV light; (2) an arena with vole urine and faeces in visible light; (3) a clean arena in UV light; and (4) a clean arena in visible light. Owls did not prefer any of the four arenas. Our results…

Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner 1915 (Bt) is an entomopathogenic bacterium used to control insect pest worldwide. During its life cycle, Bt produces different insecticidal proteins, among which Veg...
Understanding distortions of inorganic substructures in chloridobismuthates(III)
2021
The molar ratio variations of organic and inorganic reactants of chloridobismuthates(III) with N,N-dimethylethane-1,2-diammonium, [(CH3)2NH(CH2)2NH3]2+, and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylguanidinium, [NH2C{N(CH3)2}2]+, cations lead to the formation of four different products, namely, tris(N,N-dimethylethane-1,2-diammonium) bis[hexachloridobismuthate(III)], [(CH3)2NH(CH2)2NH3]3[BiCl6]2 (1), catena-poly[N,N-dimethylethane-1,2-diammonium [[tetrachloridobismuthate(III)]-μ-chlorido]], {[(CH3)2NH(CH2)2NH3][BiCl5]} n (2), tris(N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylguanidinium) tri-μ-chlorido-bis[trichloridobismuthate(III)], [NH2C{N(CH3)2}2]3[Bi2Cl9] (3), and catena-poly[N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylguanidinium [[dichloridobismutha…
Copper(II) Polyamine Complexes withN-Benzothiazole Sulfonamides as Counterions — Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Properties of [Cu(dien)2](L1)2[HL…
2003
Copper(II) complexes of new N-benzothiazole sulfonamides (HL1= N-2-(benzothiazole)naphtalensulfonamide and HL2 = N-2-(6-chlorobenzothiazole)toluenesulfonamide) with ethylenediamine (en) and diethylenetriamine (dien) have been synthesized and characterised. The crystal structures of [Cu(dien)2](L1)2 (1) and [Cu(en)2(H2O)2](L2)2 (2) compounds have been determined. The metal centre adopts a “4+2” distorted octahedral environment in both complexes. Unusually, the sulfonamidate anions act as counterions. Spectroscopic properties are in good agreement with the crystal structures. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of complex 2 has been tested. Kupfer(II)-Polyamin-Komplexe mit N-Benzothi…
A quantitative review of the lifestyle, habitat and trophic diversity of dinoflagellates (Dinoflagellata, Alveolata)
2012
This study reviews the trends in the lifestyle, habitat distribution and trophic diversity of the 2377 described species of dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae). Most of the dinoflagellates inhabit marine waters, whereas 17% of the total species have colonized continental waters. Dinoflagellates are dominated by planktonic species, while benthic forms represented 8% of the species. From the total number of species, 49% are heterotrophic (devoid of plastids), while 51% of the species have been reported with plastids (that does not strictly imply autotrophy). All the basal dinoflagellates (ellobiopsids, Duboscquodinida, Syndiniales) are heterotrophic, with the exception of a few Noctilucales (Spatul…
Activity of bacteria strains originaited from sewage sludge against some soil fungi
2004
Abstract The potential biological activity of three bacterial strains against the four phytopathogens was examined. The bacterial strains were originated from sewage sludge water extract and from the humic acid solution obtained from the sewage sludge. The fresh bacteria cultures and filtered culture broth were used. The noncoated sugar beet seeds were coated by soaking for 15 min in the liquid culture of bacteria, then they were sown in the sterilized soil inoculated by one of the following types of soil fungus: Aphanomyces cochlioides L3, Phoma betas PH8, Pythium irregulare PIR4, Rhizoctonia solani Z10-2. The test proved that Bacillus amytoliquefaciens O1 / O3 and Flaviomonas oryzihabitan…
Antifeedant activity of neo-clerodane diterpenoids from Teucrium fruticans and derivatives of fruticolone
1999
The antifeedant activity of three neo-clerodane diterpenoids, fruticolone, isofruticolone and fruticolide from Teucrium fruticans was assessed using larvae of Spodoptera littoralis. Isofruticolone was one of the most potent of the Teucrium derived neo-clerodanes. Chemical modification of functional groups on fruticolone showed that its activity could be enhanced.
Haemolytic activity and characterization of nematocyst venom fromPelagia noctiluca(Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)
2013
We investigated the haemolytic capacity of the crude venom extracted from isolated nematocysts of Pelagia noctiluca (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa), and evidenced the proteic fractions responsible for this activity. The nematocyst venom was used at various concentrations to evaluate the haemolytic activity and the lysosomal membrane stability of red blood cells of two teleostean species treated with the extract. The nematocyst extract was assayed against erythrocytes of the two teleostean species living in different environments, Carassius auratus as a common freshwater species, and Liza aurata as a representative of seawater species. Experiments on the haemolytic activity of P. noctiluca in the pres…
trans-Bis(1H-benzimidazole-1-thione-κS)tetrachlorotellurium methanol disolvate
2002
The Te atom in the title complex, trans-[TeCl4(C6H4N2H2CS)2]·2CH4O or C16H20Cl4N4O2S2Te, occupies a special position at a crystallographic inversion centre and has an octahedral coordination formed by four chloro ligands and the S atoms of two benzimidazole–thione molecules. The hydrogen-bond system involving the disordered solvent methanol molecules links the tellurium complexes into the infinite two-dimensional aggregates in the crystal.
Uranyl sorption onto birnessite: A surface complexation modeling and EXAFS study
2014
This work investigates the mechanism of the uranyl interaction with birnessite, one of the most common layer-type MnO2 mineral at the Earth's surface, by coupling macroscopic (surface complexation experiments) and microscopic (EXAFS measurements) approaches. The sorption of uranyl on synthetic hexagonal birnessite, the low-pH birnessite form, was studied under various conditions of pH (3–6), electrolyte backgrounds (0.1 M NaClO4, NaNO3 and Na2CO3), and solid/liquid ratios (from 0.27 to 4.5 g/L). Sorption isotherms exhibit a complex form indicative of at least two types of sorption sites. EXAFS data reveal the presence of two equatorial O shells at ca. 2.32 Å and 2.46 Å for all the samples, …
