<p>A randomized multicenter study comparing seawater washes and carmellose artificial tears eyedrops in the treatment of dry eye syndrome</p…
2019
Purpose To investigate the safety and efficacy of sterile isotonic seawater washes vs standard treatment with carmellose artificial tears in dry eye syndrome (DES). Patients and methods This is a randomized multicenter prospective study with 12 weeks of follow-up. A group of patients with DES (N=60) were treated with seawater spray (Quinton®) five times daily, and another similar group (N=60) were treated with carmellose artificial tears eyedrops (Viscofresh® 0.5%) five times a day. The parameters studied and measured were as follows: Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire score, Schirmer I test (without anesthesia) score, tear osmolarity (TearLab®), tear breakup time, tear meniscus hei…
Ocular surface disease during dupilumab treatment in patients with atopic dermatitis, is it possible to prevent it?

CHANGES IN THE TEAR PROTEIN PATTERNS OF DIABETIC PATIENTS USING TWO-DIMENSIONAL ELECTROPHORESIS.
2000
Four to five million Germans suffer from diabetes mellitus, and worldwide there are about 100 million people that suffer with the disease. In diabetic patients, dry eye and other ocular surface diseases occur more often than in healthy subjects. Very little is known about the alterations in tears caused by diabetes mellitus, or its influence on the pathogenesis of e.g., the dry eye disease. Recent studies from our group showed that there are differences in the one-dimensional electrophoretic tear protein separations between diabetic patients and healthy volunteers.1,2 The aim of this study is to analyze the tear protein patterns of patients suffering from diabetes (DIA) (Fig.l), and to comp…

Locking Y Lateral Canthopexy as a Treatment for Dry Eye Disease Caused by Eyelid Malposition
2020
PURPOSE The signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) can affect the quality of life of patients. This study analyzes whether locking Y lateral canthopexy improves patients' quality of life and in what way it does so (based on the ocular surface disease index questionnaire) and DED signs (measured by the fluorescein breakup time, tear osmolarity, Schirmer test, and corneal staining) in patients with DED caused by a eyelid malposition or impaired blink dynamics. METHODS This was a case-control study. Forty eyes of 20 patients with DED and lateral canthal disinsertion examined at the University Hospital La Ribera during a 1-year period from November 2016 to November 2017. The 40 eyes were d…
Use of digital displays and ocular surface alterations: A review.
2020
Digital display use has been accepted to be implicated as a contributing factor for dry eye disease (DED). Abnormal blinking during computer operation, including a reduced blink rate and an incomplete eyelid closure, increased palpebral fissure as consequence of high visualization angles, and meibomian gland dysfunction associated to long-term display use, are behind the increased prevalence of dry eye signs and symptoms found in digital display users. Previous research reveals significant reductions in tear volume and stability, alterations in tear film composition, including increased osmolarity, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress markers and reduced mucin secretion, eyelid abnormal…
The effects of microwave radiation generated by mobile phones on the tear film
2021
Abstract Electromagnetic radiation (ER) emitted by mobile phones and other modern devices has potentially harmful effects on ocular tissue. Their effects on the eye surface and tear film are little known so far. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of ER emitted by the phone mobile on the tear film. For this study, we selected a total of 50 subjects, young, healthy, without chronic treatment, who are not contact lens wearers and who have no history of ophthalmic surgery. Schirmer I test, tear pH and tear ferning test (TFT) were performed on all subjects before (“-pre”) being exposed to ER emitted by the mobile phone and after (“-post”) exposure for 5 minutes, the pH and TFT …
Use of digital displays and ocular surface alterations
2023
